Love The Dollop, so many amazing and fascinating stories

What are you up to?

15 - ten cent beer night

it's slow going, but i love it

I like podcasts but find it pretty hard to actually stop and listen to them. Always feel like I should be doing something else while I listen, and if I'm doing something that takes up similar brainspace (e.g. reading forums on the internet) I can't do both at once.

podcasts will make you happier and smarter than internet forums

Anyone else finding podcasts have fast become your favourite form of entertainment?

There's something about putting on earphones and sinking into a good podcast that feels personal and unique. Live episodes lose this effect though and are generally shit to listen to.

I don't know if they're my favourite form of entertainment, but from a comedy perspective I get way more of what I want from podcasts then I do from movies or even most of TV right now. I think I laugh more at a new episode of Hollywood Handbook than I do, like, anything else.

The only thing that makes me laugh more than the McElroys riffing and bouncing off each other on MBMBAM is the McElroys riffing and bouncing off each other on Monster Factory

But yeah, between MBMBAM, The Dollop, Magic Tavern, Beef and Dairy Network, I Hate Movies, podcasts make me laugh more than movies and TV

The Flop House is another one that just makes me laugh like an idiot in public.

i really need to check out Hollywood Handbook

Oh, I didn't know there was a general podcast thread! Neat! I've been working a job that's pretty hands heavy and brain light, so it's the perfect situation to listen to podcasts all day. Mostly The Dollop, but I've been mixing in a lot of fun science and politics and history podcasts as well. Looking forward to reading through this thread for more great podcasts.

Although, my coworkers still look at me weird when I bust out laughing in the middle of work. But it's probably worth it.

First episode was pretty interesting, definitely worth checking out
Honestly, I picked it up primarily because Gimlet's been knocking it out of the park with almost all of its shows (though cancelling Undone to keep Twice Removed is baffling). It's so far probably the only channel where I'll at least give all of its new stuff a try.

EDIT: Except that radio drama one. That kind of show just doesn't appeal to me, and the preview was mad boring.

Yeah, pretty much everything Gimlet does is great, although I particularly enjoy Crimetown and Reply All

Added r/Podcasts and The Bello Collective to Where To Look. Bello has been one of my favorite finds; they did the fantastic 100 Outstanding Audio Stories of 2016 article and have been my source for some of the most interesting podcasts I've found since then

One minor gripe I have about Every Little Thing: they're using Reply All's ad theme. It doesn't affect the show's quality at all, and I totally get why they'd want to reuse it to reduce overhead, but I feel like it really only works for Reply All because it matches their other music well. I also liked that every Gimlet show prior to this had its own ad music and ad style that matched the show, and this feels kind of lazy.

Yup. That's why they're good for drawing/driving/biking/walking/cooking/chores.

Between Flop House, How Did This Get Made, and I Hate Movies, IHM is the one that won out for me, although I listen to Flop House sometimes as well

We Hate Movies is closer to my sense of humor than How Did This Get Made.

On the Last Airbender one I laughed so hard while driving home I thought I was going to die

As for actual movie discussion, I've been really enjoying One Perfect Pod. I particular like their movie reviews. They discuss their expectations before seeing the movie, based on trailers and their experience with the director/genre/etc, and come back afterwards to discuss the movie and how the film compared tp their expectations

The last two episodes of Hello from the Magic Tavern were pretty good, seems like they might FINALLY be getting back on track. Jamey and Samey were hilarious guests!

Hey all - I'm part of a Jurassic Park / Jurassic World Podcast called 'InGeneral' by Jurassic Outpost!

XdlT3YC.jpg

Our latest episode (#52) revolves around the latest news, particularly the return of Jeff Goldblum.

Figured I would share for those interested!

Been making podcasts for awhile, finally got one reviewed on Podmass.

80sAllOverlogo.jpg

Most recent episode of '80s All Over made the list this week! Was pretty cool to see. In case you're thinking of slotting in a new movie show in your rotation. I don't talk on it at all outside of doing the intro vocals (so there's a point in its favor for a lot of people here), I just record/produce/edit it. It's Drew McWeeny (formerly HitFix & Aint it Cool, currently a Schmoedown regular) and Scott Weinberg (formerly Cinematical & Bloody Disgusting, currently at Nerdist) going through the entirety of the 1980s in film, one month at a time, in order. Updates once every two weeks.

I'm editing the 18th episode now (May, 1981). The first four months of 1980 are kinda rough on the sound-quality side of things as they worked out getting/implementing mics/mixers and all that, but it pretty much gets dialed in just in time for Empire Strikes Back (of course).

Anyway, if you want to get schooled on what it was like to grow up as a movie fan in the '80s (and I mean all of the '80s, not just the Spielberg/Miami Vice/Slasher-Flick '80s) give it a shot.

Congrats! What other podcasts have you done, any where you discuss movies?

I used to help co-host/co-produce Full of Sith, which is a Star Wars-specific show (surprise). Stopped being a regular shortly after The Force Awakens came out, although I come back every now and again, usually for the Rumor Control spinoffs I do (started as spoiler roundups for TFA and are now basically just half-hour fact-checks on Star Wars news whenever something controversial happens)

Before that, I helped get X-Plain the X-Men off the ground (a rolling history of the X-Men and all their comics/cartoon/movie/gaming spinoffs) producing the first 50+ episodes of that before handing it off to Kyle from Kaijucast, who's still doing it (Kaijucast is a pretty fun Godzilla-focused show, been going on for about a decade now, I think). That one got covered on a lot of comics site and even got a shout-out in Entertainment Weekly, which was pretty damned cool.

Found this really useful site for searching for podcasts
https://www.audiosear.ch/
Can search by phrases, topics, people, etc., sort results by various filters, and get "similar to" recommendations

Semi random question for you: what is the name of the episode and/or podcast about a father who was accused of doing something unspeakable to his two daughters? It's told from the point of view of the mother and I believe the podcast was based out of Chicago but the story took place in Louisiana. I specifically remember you linking it in either this thread or another thread about podcasts.

I know this is random as hell but I've been searching every where for it and can't find it! Any ideas?

Added The Venture and You Are Not So Smart.

I've not listened to the latter yet, but so far, from just the first episode of The Venture, I'm not feeling it. I'm going to stick it out a bit longer, though, because music episodes of any show always bore the hell out of me (the last Tell Me Something I Don't Know was the worst one), so I'm hoping it's just an outlier.

So, here's something I noticed: a lot of NPR and WNYC shows will cover roughly the same topic at around the same time. I think sometimes they even interview the same people, but I can't quite tell if it's the same person being interviewed multiple times (which makes sense, since they'd probably want to book multiple interviews at the same place on the same day) or if they just do one interview and edit it differently for each show. If it's the latter, I wonder who actually does the interview.

For example, today's Freakonomics Radio covers pretty much the exact same topic—Google search data—as last week's Hidden Brain, and I think they even talk to the same guy. I noticed that one thing in particular that he says (that he thought racism in the US would be concentrated in the south, but it's actually more of an east-west split) appears on both shows, but the phrasing is different. I'm pretty sure a very similar topic was the focus of Note to Self a few weeks ago, as well.

This isn't even the first time I've noticed something like this. I think a few weeks ago, Nolan Bushnell did an interview that was on both How I Built This and Freakonomics.

Anyway, Freakonomics will have Steve Ballmer on next week, so I'll keep an ear out for whether he shows up elsewhere.

No love for The Read?? Cmon man. Seriously though, this is one the funniest black/pop/lgbt culture podcasts ive listened to. Crissle is so good when she goes off on subjects like Rachel Dolezal, Trump winning, and basically anything to do with fuckboys.

Haven't listened to The Read recently because I have too many podcasts to keep up with, but I love them both. I remember reading Kid Fury's blog way back in the day and dying over how funny and shady he was for being so young. I'm really happy him and Crissle have been successful.

In terms of guests, people go on press tours, that's a thing. Promoting a new book or intentionally building profile for something. Or they just have a hole in their schedule and want to do it. You hire an agent or promoter or whatever, and they call around and pitch you to shows.

Ballmer was on Bill Simmons's sports show in the last month.

Makes sense, but some of them sounded like they just recut clips from the same interview.

Also, I picked up Outside|In this morning, mainly because I liked what I heard from their episode being played by 99% Invisible.

Dropped The Sporkful. I just don't see myself ever getting around to it.

Trying to find more podcasts like StuffYouShouldKnow, those two guys are so chill and such a pleasure to listen to.

Went to the My Favorite Murder live show in Philly last night, that was a hell of a good time. Loving the touring podcast idea, now that I've seen MFM and Night Vale live, I need to catch Last Podcast on the Left next time they come around!

I listen to a lot of podcasts... but I find the true crime podcasts to be the most engrossing.

Searching around for a new one since I'm running low on episodes from some of my other favorites, I finally got around to Casefile (which is listed in the OP)... gotta say it's jumped to near the top of my list of favs because the host (who apparently is... anonymous?) gives incredibly detailed accounts of every part of the story.

Most of the podcasts of this nature kind of skim over events... but Casefile really slows down the pace and packs each described event full of information. I guess that's why so many are long multi-parters... the latest one that is still unfolding is a four parter on the 1976 The East Area Rapist, with part one being 116 minutes (most of their episodes are fairly long like this), so it may end up being nearly 8 hours long. Crazy!

I also love a podcast that knows when and where to put the ads... I can't stand having a podcast broken up with tons of ads all the time, particularly long ads. Startalk is really bad in that regard, as are many others. Casefile does it right.

Highly recommended.

Podcasts, guys... it's incredible how much high-quality entertainment is out there and accessible for FREE. This is truly a golden age.

Does anyone here use Castro? Was reading some reviews of podcast apps, and that sounded promising. The stuff I read specifically it was good for people who subscribe to a lot of podcasts

Also, are there seriously no apps that let you group podcasts in folders?

Thanks to some comments earlier, I decided to checkout The Dollop and started with "The Rube." I laughed so hard I nearly crashed my car. I am now going through all the episodes.

Overcast on iOS lets you make playlists that can act like folders for downloaded episodes (i.e.: this playlist only has episodes from x, y, and z podcasts). No grouping for the feeds themselves though.

Yeah, grouping by feeds is what I'm hoping for, like how you can put apps together in folders

It's been a long while, but Revisionist History is back for season 2 soon! This podcast had the best theme song.

Also, Invisibilia is coming back.

I've gotten hooked on The Moth. There are a lot of great storytelling/personal stories podcasts (This Is Actually Happening, Strangers and Beautiful Stories from Anonymous People are really good), but The Moth has a few aspects that make it really binge worthy. Multiple stories per episodes, each one ranging from 5 to 15 minutes. A nice range of tones, from funny and life-affirming to emotional and tense. And the stories are told/recorded live, so they have that natural conversational pacing that make easy to listen to.
