Jeff Kaplan acknowledging loot box feedback in Overwatch

Gold takes too long to acquire. I've played about 2 hours a night since the event started. I had 1200 gold at the start, now I have 1600 gold. That's too damn slow.

Theyre super smart too, theyre ending comp this month which is the fastest way to get EXP so now for the rest of the event people are just gonna have to deal with QP EXP and Arcade boxes.

Comp doesn't give you any more exp than anything else. The matches just last longer. You get exp for time played, medals won, whether or not you played a consecutive match, and you get a bonus for being in a group.

Edit: Whoops, thought I was editing my old post and not making a new one.

this was just them seeing how far they could push it.

I agree.
They won't do anything about it during this event. They'll just put less emotes/skins in next events so it will be easier for people to farm/get what they want.
Hope I'm wrong.

This has been a ways coming, glad it is finally boiling over. I like the lootbox system but the Overwatch method is too punishing. Unless you're paying out the ass you're likely to walk away with nearly nothing.

HotS did the switch to boxes better. Can buy skins for cash initially (and during random sales), can reroll boxes, boxes more common, prices more fair, currency more common, boxes more interesting in general.

Overwatch could stand a big currency overhaul and a chest reroll, at the least. My big complaints with OW have always been currency and music

I don't think that's true. The boxes are so expensive and give you so little that a lot of people are just not going to bother. I know I won't. They're basically chasing whales who MUST HAVE THAT SKIN exclusively at the moment. I have friends who love throwing money at Hearthstone and Rocket League, but not OW because it's just such a miserable system to partake in.

You're overestimating gamers' restraint.

It's not really surprising people are upset since there's a tons of 3k skins and every single character got a 750 dance type emote. That's a lot of gold for stuff, and the smaller gold items add up as well when they are 75 a pop.

At a bare minimum, dupes of event items should give 3x the gold, since event items are 3x the price. 200 for a dupe that costs 3000 is completely unacceptable. Also a bare minimum should be blocking out non event items. Both should be super easy to implement since loot is decided when the box is obtained.

I know Blizzard is capable of a much better loot system since the new HotS one is pretty awesome.

Not quite. Exp is gained by time played. A comp match is effectively two QP games. So less matches played, but same overall time spent for the same amount of exp.

The main issue in all of this imo is the amount of gold you get for dupes. Like only 250 for a duplicate Legendary skin is ridiculous. I get they need to monetize and make money so getting the full 1000 gold is unrealistic, but you should at least get half of the items value

It would be fine if all hte new shit wasn't ALWAYS event only, which makes it cost 3 times as much. Like, the ratios were all perfect at launch, then everyone bitched about the olympic event (WHICH WAS DESERVEd, I WAS AMONG THEM), but people gave them the 'just charge 3 times as much!' idea and that was a huge fucking mistake.

The 'charge 3 times as much' thing made a lot more sense when the game was new and we hadn't yet learned that essentially every skin would be event only and always cost '3 times as much'. That's a hindsight thing because if people had known how it'd be nobody would suggest that.

Geez, imagine if they didn't make that change, though. Imagine if every event we've had was just loot box roulette only. I can't believe how such a terrible idea made it past the idea phase.

The video about how much stuff costs in this event compared to the others has already been posted right? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbUQZyTUa9w

It probably has but, it's basically unrealistic to try to get everything in this or any other event while grinding with a very low amount of gold starting out because gold is RNG and spending money on boxes is RNG too but I guess you just brute force it with a bunch of money in boxes to force gold.

Yup this. If they would just up the gold amount I think you could make a respectable amount of gold without destroying the progression.

I've gotten 20~ish boxes since the event started, literally zero yellows, and the only non-shitty event item was a single dance for a character I don't use.
And while I'm cashing in the winnings from my dupe event player icons, I see my currency go up at a rate which makes it impossible for me to get the skins for the two characters I play the most.

I'm burning out fast here.

It's all completely calculated. What is the ideal way to keep people spending money on boxes while giving them the least value for that money, so they constantly need to buy more boxes to keep up? This system.

Unfortunately, there's always going to be those who drop money on boxes every event, so they'll keep doing it unless that changes.

I've had a few more boxes, approaching 20 for the event and nothing but a couple of dance emotes. Not a single legendary.

This is exactly me. I've seen one skin in 20 boxes and it's was a purple dupe.

Meanwhile my scrub friend opened 3 boxes and got 2 new legendary skins. Fuuuu

early on skins weren't event only. Like they added reinhardt skins with the map and those were regular items, that was just after summer games. People complaining about summer loot boxes and the changes caused by it actually made it harder to get the items. We no longer get skins outsides of event except when a new hero is released with terrible skins and seemingly item drop rates got much much worse compared with summer games. That whole thing backfired on the community. Summer games had multiple variation of same legendary skins, it made it more likely to get one of them at least. Now though there is only one type of those skins and fewer legs per event makes it less likely for people to open them. Now you have to pay credits which are so slow to get. The original system was more generous lol.

I've never had too many issues with the way they do things. But this event, man, every skin cost 3000 and getting a dupe is only 200 that's just harsh as fuck. Especially when I want so many of the skins.

I do think the fact that we're pretty much getting nothing that isn't event items hurts the triple price thing, that wasn't what we were lead to beleive would be the case a year ago.

It's ridiculous that the dance emotes aren't permanent additions, keep them 750 if you want but don't make them timed (wouldn't be surprised if they did this as a goodwill thing)

Overwatch has been very good to me, I usually don't mind dishing out a few bucks for skins. But yea this might be the event that jumped the shark a bit. We'll see what the coming year has to offer. They didn't seem very keen on doing anything but repeating all of the same events, I feel like that would be very poorly received by the playerbase.

We really just need the event skins to give 600 coins on a dupe instead of a completely paltry and nearly insulting 200, and maybe event lootboxes to stop dropping normal legendaries.

True. The worst part for me is that I would pay for

a) the skins I want.
or b) lootboxes with guaranteed legendaries every 5 boxes and no dupes.

But instead all I get to pay for is the chance to get some or none of what I want, and astronomical odds of getting everything I want. I bought lootboxes during Chinese New Year. Never again.

I definitely used to. I thought no one would throw 50 bucks (or more) at the game to maybe get about 4 random legendary skins, but a bunch of people seem to do that every event.

Still, I don't think they've hit the sweet spot. For example, if every box had 5 items instead of 4, people would be a little more eager to buy them and it's not like an extra item would break the system and boost people to a complete collection anytime soon. Revamping the whole system to be more rewarding for the player would fare even better I'd imagine.

Even your "desired" system leads to outrage. For Honor refused to rely solely on loot boxes and allowed you to buy exactly the cosmetic items and animations you wanted, and people still got outraged. Weirdly, even more outraged than games with loot boxes, presumably because attaching prices to everything instead of no prices (loot boxes only), meant that players could work out precisely the costs and time commitments required for everything. Even then the popular math was wildly inaccurate, but the bandwagon didn't care.

I opened a box last night, and got a silver anniversary voice line and a silver standard spray (along with two other pieces of shit).

I opened a second box, and that one box contained BOTH of those EXACT same items.

If these were actually random, that has to be one in a million. They have to be puting the thumb on the scale to make sure you receive not just garbage, but duplicate garbage. With worthless coin payouts.

I have played this game since the day it came out, but not min maxed box attainment (mostly playing normal matchmaking and getting boxes only buy leveling) and I have like 2200 coins. So I can't even buy a single legendary event skin after a year's work. I've maybe bought one or two things for like 125 coins each in that year.

It's not about completionism, it's about getting stuff that looks cool. In Gears 4, which everyone tore into, I could proactively SELL shit I had unlocked to get currency. I wasn't stuck waiting for a dupe to give me 5 coins. And as far as I played, the game didn't seem stacked to give me dupes.

This is unreal. And here I thought Destiny was bad.

Since this event started, I have opened 17 loot boxes including 10 non event boxes from the Nexus challenge. Zero legendaries wtf. Did they lower the legendary drop rate? It feels like I should have got at least two legendaries.

Charging 3K for an event skin would be fine IF it was still available to purchase after the event is over.

Not when the duplicates of them still reward the normal dupe amount.

The fact that the Dances aren't permanent additions is really weird to me.

Honestly a lot of this could be alleviated if for two weeks every six months or something. You had boxes that would give you items from old events. There has to be SOMETHING that let's you get some of these items. Because as it stands now it's just weird how they are staggering them.

Seriously, I want to see an Overwatch loot box apologist explain this.

They even occupy the same spots in the display. If this isn't rigged it must be a one in a billion chance. Back to back boxes.

Glad I stopped buying boxes after the Christmas event. I knew something was up months ago when I was getting earned loot boxes with nothing but sprays and voice lines. During the Christmas and Halloween event I bought 50 loot boxes and got almost every skin each time.

The hots re-roll mechanic is pretty neat, they could just increase the gold rewards, and allow re-rolling for 100 gold or something.

You guys remember when they tried to make event skins non punchasable with in game currency?

Also, I think event content is fine how it is right now, BUT DEAR GOD WE'VE GOT NOTHING BUT EVENTS. Like fuck off.

The simple fact that something like "white-white-blue-white" is such a prominent draw in these boxes shows how rigged it is. Nothing about this shit feels random

I've leveled up about 7 or 8 times and i haven't seen so many WWBW boxes since the game launched.

Event rolls for common items is like 60 items. That makes it a 1 in 3600 chance. It's unlucky but not unfeasible.

This event is real fucking loot box bait though, I agree with that.

Isn't white white blue white just how that combination of boxes always permutes? Like a rare card always being the last one in the pack or something? I don't think the order not being random means that the contents aren't random.

It was extremely evident that they messed with the ratios between the Halloween event and Christmas event. I'm glad I only spent money on Halloween.

edit: Actually I misspoke, I meant between the Olympic event and Halloween. I did spend money on Halloween because the ratios were ass in comparison. Thankfully I haven't spent money on boxes since.

Couldn't the pink spray on the right have been any of the common sprays/player icons/voice lines? That one isn't an event thing and should have something like 1 in hundreds chance of appearing. Then you have to factor in both of them, hitting back to back, in the same positions.

I really don't think that's random.

you are 100% garaunteed to get at least one anniversary item, so that common tracer voice line isnt really surprising. the spray is the only thing you got thats like omg how unlucky

I never understood why you just can't buy profile pictures. Is it because your profile picture doubles as your avatar on the Overwatch forum? Because that is the only thing that makes any kind of sense at all, and that's not a good reason.

Just in case you can't see, both legendary drops are dupes.

I think if they don't change their loot system, people will start to buy less. What's the point if you can't unlock anything?

Yea this is my only gripe too and this is coming from someone with over 350 hours of over watch play time. I'm fine with the rarity of legendaries but getting a legendary dupe and getting crap coins for it is depressing. All around the duplicate coins rewards should be increased and don't touch anything else

Nah just ask the guy with tha Hanzo avatar. You obviously aren't playing the game enough to get what you want.

Another problem I see is that there was no time between this event and the last event.so not many people had time to save up gold and/or spent their gold from the last event.

I came back to Overwatch for the anniversary event. I skipped pretty much every previous event, and I hadn't played at all since Ana was released.

I'm still getting a stupid number of dupes per loot box. The fact that they haven't expanded the number of non-event specific eternal loot box items is obscene. I shouldn't be seeing a single damn dupe when I open a box, I should be seeing items I've never even seen before. They need to add permanent items to the pool instead of just making them all limited to events.
