In Michigan, Trump voters still have the president's back

Republicans gonna Republican, nothing will ever change that. Every election since probably JFK has been all about the variance of Democratic turnout, the folks quoted in these articles are lost causes and always have been.

there's no political campaign you can run to win over these people if you're a Democrat

they're too deep down the Fox News hole

The hole is deeper than that, too. I know 8-12 year olds who sing right wing talking points like nursery rhymes because they listen to am radio and watch Fox and Friends before school with their parents. Retirement homes leave Fox News on all day - watch the commercials they show, they're targeted to 65-85 y/o people with medicine, catheter cowboys, insurance for your grandkids... Heck, FN is on 24/7 on most military bases (armed services GAF can confirm).

Explaining anything to the indoctrinated is like pouring water on concrete. Although there's a full page 15-bullet point article on MLive and the mid Michigan newspapers today about how the budget will negatively impact Michigan deeply.

“You know, the guy is thinking in the same terms as the everyday, common working guy,” Salcido said. “He talks the same way, he says the same things. … He’s basically mimicking the way that we feel.”

If common working men are like Trump's almost daily idiocy...lol

I dunno about you but after a hard days work I too like to come home to my gold plated penthouse. Just like the common man.

That probably the best solution for moderates and people still on the fence but these people man, these people.

Short of the heavenly father coming down himself and calling trump a dick, they wont change their minds. Shit they might try to defend him at that moment too.

The mortal mouth piece of the heavenly father, the Pope, did and Trump went after him. His base backed Trump. His base is forever lost.

Michigan is facing serious brain drain. The economy wasn't great for years and a LOT of skilled graduates took off for greener pastures.

Anecdotal, but backs this up...

My husband and I moved out of Michigan last year. We spent 2 years getting some entry level experience, and fled for greener pastures.

Almost everyone I went to school with is now not in Michigan. It's crazy.

It's a shame. My Wife is from Michigan (Ann Arbor) and I love it. We go to South Haven every summer.

Democratic obstruction? The Democrats can't obstruct anything. They have no power.

Trump voters are a lost cause. Democrats need to focus on their base first and Republican suburbs second for voters.

Sad to see but a lot of these baby boomers are stuck in their old mindset and nothing you can say and do will change them. The youth need to go out and vote 2018. This is your future they are fucking up.

He will always have their backing, they don't care what he says or does, they support him because he's their enemy's enemy. If you want to see him lose support at the expense of another, it will be when someone worst runs.

The longer this "rock solid" support for Trump lasts the more convinced I am that America is truly fucked and is never going to not be a racist shithole in many places. Seems like people were just waiting for a racist shitbag to normalize their backwards and racist worldview.

You are always going to find insane republicans that will support him no matter what. The biggest question is whether or not the people that pushed him over the edge continue to support him

I'm always reminded of how Obama pushed for ACA coverage that benefited coal miners. Many are probably still alive today because of it and voted for orange turd. So I want the Democratic party to completely stop caring about those people and focus on the base even more like you said.

These republican fanatics will never be happy unless the Democratic party denounces support for minority rights. Even then, if next time the Democratic party walks away from gun control legislation you can count on fox news lying about it.

These people are lost, don't devote too much time and energy to them. If we're lucky, Trumps mistakes and lack of ability will sway them into some form of critical thinking. But at this point it is more important to start looking to the future and building up an opposition candidate, one that can successfully campaign against him and draw in the moderates/folks that sat 2016 out. With them, and the dem base, the Trump base isn't enough to secure him a 2nd term.

Well, they did vote for him.

If someone talked to me like how Trump talks, I'd call a doctor.

At least one third of this country is raw sewage in human form and the planet will be unfathomably better when they're gone.

The self described "angry white voter" in this story is so typical. Everyone is out to get Trump, he hasn't gotten a fair chance. I wonder what his thoughts are on the minority experience in America. I have a feeling it's something along the lines of "they should pull themselves up by their bootstraps."

To say that someone that is rich as hell and constantly acts like a complete idiot hasn't gotten a fair chance is maddening. I am also extremely concerned that so many people say he speaks like them. First of all, the president should NEVER speak like the average American as they represent us to the world. Secondly, Trump is a big ball off offensiveness when he speaks, which means they see themselves in him which is disgusting.

Deplorables will be deplorables to the end.

I just hope that people who aren't will actually be motivated to show up and f-ing vote.

About 30%-35% of the country is unmovable when it comes to Trump. They will support him no matter how bad it gets. If you accept that notion, then the comments in this story is not at all surprising.

Even GWB still had 20%-25% of the country supporting him at the end of his presidency after all that has happened. Trump's bigotry and racism brought in another 5%-10% that GWB did not get since, despite all his faults, GWB did not revel in bigotry and sexism like Trump did

So you have about 1/3rd of the country that is a lost cause.

My hometown and the larger town nearby lost so much more during the Bush years than it did the Obama years, and these morons thought getting another fucking Republican in the White House would be a real change that fixes shit (or they thought it would be a believable excuse). People in this older demographic are never, ever going to learn. The only hope is that there comes a day where they're too demoralized to fuck everything up for the rest of us.

Fox news combined with right wing facebook spam is a powerful combination.

Don't forget right wing radio. Always so much fun to listen to Rush's rambling when I go to the post office. /s

I think he's a good man and he's accomplishing a lot but nobody seems to care."

Someone should have asked her to elaborate on the "accomplishing a lot". The reason these people still support him is because he hasn't really accomplished anything yet and the downstream effects haven't hit them. The bans got shot down by the courts, and everything else is just defunding things or just threatening to do so (with the ACA... he's basically killed it by threatening to do so). The first part is laughable as hell given that he constantly insults people and bullies them.

There is no good way out of this is there?
Nope. With growing wealth inequality, fake news, cuts to social programs, and the eradication of blue collar jobs through outsourcing and automation things are going to get a whole lot worse. Downtrodden people will blame whoever is convenient and at hand.

I'm wondering where the divide between these folks expressing support four months in and how intense their actual enthusiasm will be four years in.

For many, sure, if you approach them in the street with a microphone and camera crew in tow, they'll express confidence in their decision to support Trump. But we're still just four months in and he's already in a tailspin of a presidency.

How assured can Trump be that all of his supporters who were loud and proud in 2016 will still show up to rallies in the same numbers, still tell all their friends and family to vote, and show up to the polls themselves. Even in 2020 many of Trump's voters might still express support for him, but might not be as compelled to go the extra mile anymore.

I still think a basic enthusiasm collapse is more likely in Trump's base than actually turning on him altogether. And Trump's winning margins are not nearly large enough that he should shrug that prospect off.

Unsure about the die-hards. A lot of really troubling consequences of people being completely unswayed by things many of us had taken for granted as things to disqualify or kick a politician out of office.

As for Michigan itself...find someone who can channel both Bernie and Obama simultaneously? The cities turned out massively for Obama, and Bernie got large support in rural areas that Michigan Democrats had historically been weak in.

I believe it. The average American is probably quite stupid and not well-spoken.

Trump is the presidency America finally deserves: a satirical accuracy of the democratic masses.

Doesn't matter, liberal media.

::slams head on desk a hundred times::

Sincere question: Has any other president's voters been interviewed this frequently since taking office?

At least twice a week I see a "what Trump's supporters say" article.

As a Michigander, I'm so sorry.

Also, FUCK Trump for affecting the Great Lakes budget. One of the nation's most valuable assets. Fuck that prick.

Something tells me that any voters who flipped blue to red are a lot less likely to have the president's back still than those who voted against Obama.

I will never understand the points of these articles. They're all over the place. Of course, the die-hard Trump people still support him. They're not what won him the election. It was Obama to Trump voters or people who voted Obama but didn't turn out.

You can write this story with any state "Trump hardliners in California aren't giving up on him!" It's just a weird propaganda piece. I don't get it. Where are the "Old, black women aren't giving up on Hillary yet" pieces?

They are specifically going out of the way to find Trump crazies. We're not hearing from those who support him but still have reservations. There are a lot of people who are really waiting on the investigation to complete.

The amount of ignorance and obtuse in these words are baffling.

Normal sane people think why are people stupid? Stupidity shows many colors and this is a prime example of people who are not only stupid but also even dumber to think even clearly what the fuck trump is doing to the US and even the world.

Not surprised. Trump's approval just started skyrocketing.

He might be back in the high 40s / low 50s in the next couple days.

So basically old white people? Once they dont get their medicaid they wont change their minds but they'll think twice to vote.

Just give it a few months my family is poor and we have just starting to feel Trumps policy in this month or so. Soon it's possible I might have to give up internet and TV to be able afford food to last the month and I would have to assume the majority of these people are going to be feeling the same thing.

Yeah... These idiots are in the same demo/age bracket as my mother and her band of "bible study" bigots that have pushed my mother further off the evangelical deep end and I've had to hear all sorts of shit about Obama and Clinton over the last eight or so years that no matter what evidence there is to the contrary just wouldn't be accepted and it's highly amusing how now the shoe is on the other foot they're now the ones saying it's all fake news, left-wing blah blah blah and worse with my mother using Youtube and finding the fuckheads on there. Fuck, I thought after Trump winning that maybe just maybe I'd at least stop having to hear about Obama/Hillary conspiracies but nope.

Michigan public schools.
These people went to them when they were still actually good. Level/quality of education with these people has little to do with their support of Trump.
