Games where your save file got corrupted/lost

I recently spent 20+ hours in a city I build in Cities Skylines Xbox One and it just stopped opening one day. Corrupted save file.

This happened with Mario Party 3 as well after I unlocked almost everything.

What are some of your horrible experiences with losing save files?

F0rneus

Tears in the rain
Star Ocean: The Second Story on PSX because of a cheap bootleg mem card. 200 hours down the drain.

I put over 40 hours into Oblivion and forgot to back my save up when I had to reformat. I never went back to it since I didn't feel like starting over.

I was 30 hours into the Witcher 3. Took me half a year before I finally picked it back up and poured another 150 hours into it and its awesome DLC. So glad I went back.

DragoonKain

Neighbours from Hell
Final Fantasy Tactics. I was 15-20 hours in and my memory card failed. Lost a bunch of games on that card, but FFT was the most important and never went back. I still vow to beat that game one day.

Mom saved over my file in Ratchet & Clank: A Crack In Time. I loved the game enough to play through what I'd already done but I will never forget that moment of heartbreak.

Had 100+ hours in Dark Cloud 2 and then a friend overwrote my save file.

Got through most of Red Dead Redemption before my hard drive died and I lost my save.

Had a game breaking bug playing through the PC version of Final Fantasy VIII when it first came out where the third form of the last boss would crash my game.

Pretty every much GameCube game I played with crappy third-party memory cards. So Melee, Animal Crossing multiple times, etc.
Having just gone back to play Melee again, oh my god is that not a game you want to have to reunlock everything in. The things you have to go through just to get all the legal stages are positively sadistic and brutal.

Bonus question: how far did you play a game without a memory card (by leaving the power on or other means)
I've done charity livestreams where we marathoned full JRPGs in one sitting. Do not recommend trying that yourself, but we had some good laughs through the sleep deprivation and raised decent money for Child's Play.

3rd disc on ff7 with 30+ hours corrupted on a madcatz memory card. I haven't bought any of their products since. 60+ hours on dark souls 3. Apparently ds3 doesn't use steam cloud saves and I didn't back up before doing a fresh install.

One game that comes to mind is Mega Man Battle Network 4. My GBA was running low on battery, so I went to save only for it to shut off as it was saving. And the kicker is that saving in those games are near instantaneous, so it was really bad luck for that to happen as I was saving.

Happened with Darksiders on the PS3. Just made my way through the remaster only to discover that I was less than two hours from the end when this occurred.

XCOM on PS3 for me....

Game crashed like crazy, especially later in the game on larger maps.

Once though with EW, game crashed and actually corrupted my save. Which is a problem because the game auto-saves as just 1 file, so my playthrough would have been lost. Thankfully, PS+ auto-uploads saves to its cloud backup, so I had a save file from about 4 hours of gameplay earlier.

Other than that, don't think I've ever lost another before. No major RPG at least. Don't think my PS1 memory cards ever failed either or PC save files in general.

Pokemon Silver. Oh god the save got corrupted something fierce. So many Pokemon got turned to Dittos and had scrambled names and just fucked-up in general. I was able to save most of me legendaries, but lost some big ones like my Red Gyarados. :(

Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast had people running around using gameshark (or whatever the device was called) codes to remotely overwrite the save files of other online players.

11/12 year old me lost months of progress.

That one to unlock Donkey Kongs stage...... I still have a yought trauma cuz of that lol

Xenogears. I overwrote the only save that my bro and I had. I started saving right at the savepoint before the final boss when we we underprepared. Pulled the memory card in the middle of the save when I remembered it was past the point of no return then reset my PS1 to check if my save file is still okay.

Cold day in hell for me. :(

Most recently, GTAV. Reinstalled Windows without remembering that the game doesn't have cloud saves.

Never played it since.

Final Fantasy XII. The classic "Power went out in the middle of saving" moment happened only one time in my life and my only save file of FFXII was the victim. It caused me to never play FFXII ever again.

After more than a decade later, I'm letting the HD remaster give it a second chance lol

I lost saves to both of the new Tomb Raider games due to a specific save corruption crash. The fact that the same bug existed in the sequel amazed and irritated me.

My sister was playing DJ Hero 2 and the game froze while saving. I turned off the PS3 and turned it back on and accidently clicked on check hard drive data. The PS3 said that there was a corrupted data and it had to wipe the hard drive clean. Soooooooo many saved files. Gone.

I decided on that day to always back up my saved files and eventually buy PS Plus.

Slightly different but I remember once when doing a playthrough of Final Fantasy VIII where I forgot to draw the GF from Edea in the last fight on Disc 2 then saved at the end of the disc. Started all over again. :p

Dark souls 1 my save got corrupted/lost close to the last boss. I didn't touch the game for a year. i did eventually complete it.

Dark Souls 1, just before the end boss.
After losing to him 20 times, I decided to turn off my 360 during the save screen. Terrible mistake

Already beat Dark Souls II and Bloodborne, but never got really far on DS 1 again

Final Fantasy XV. Lost 30 hours of progress and as a result my enthusiasm to keep playing absolutely cratered. Might go back to it someday, but who knows.

This is what happened to me with KOTOR. It wasn't 40 hours that I spent, but I did not feel like starting over after it happened. It saddens me that I never got to finish that game, but this thread might have motivated me to get back to it soon.

I to this day do not know why I never beat Xenogears. I got to what I am pretty sure is the final area, and never proceeded to beat the game. Wtf. Funny because it's one of my favorite games of all time despite having not beaten it. Another game I'll have to revisit.

During the ps1 days I had a memory card die on me. Most notable loss was Crash 3, where I was at the very end. Never bought a 3rd party card again. I did end up beating it.

While it never happened to me but heard that BF4 had and still could have the save bug that wipes your campaign.

This happened to me...twice

Final Fantasy 7 and 8. Not corrupted but damn my stupid young self.

I was so eager to see what my friend, who was always ahead of me, had to show so I let him come over and bring his save. 2 memory card slot meant I just let him put him in the second slot. All 3 times he loaded his game and saved over mine.

My fault 100%, but it was a stupid coincidence.

Ubisoft's stupid DRM for AssCreed 2 ate my save after 20 or so hours.

twice

I've not been able to bring myself to try playing through the game again.

Saints Row 1. Crackdown. Basically all of my older 360 games.

SR1 hurt the most though because I was 98% complete and really liked my character. :( On the plus side, I tried playing it again and the character was naked with a missing pelvis.

I'm SURE there have been others, but the one that comes immediately to mind is Dark Souls 1. I had gotten it for the 360 and was plugging away at my first souls game. Got past the Taurus Demon and everything. For those that don't know, the game autosaves after basically every action - kill an enemy, pick up an item, travel a certain distance. It's always checking, so you really don't want to turn the console off. Well, power went out. I booted everything back up when the power came back and the save was corrupted. I was PISSED.

Lost a 200+ hour game of Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, and its backup saves. It was my perfect park, took years and years, 35 coasters all over an 8 in excitment. Still salty, as the saves still exist, they just don't work on any machine I try them on.

Quantom Break. Probably half way through on hard. Save just disappeared. Was so pissed I never started again.

Not quite corrupted, but during my first playthrough of Final Fantasy Tactics I had a bugged (at least I assume it was a bug) save file that may as well have been lost. My party levels were low teens, and a chocobo in my party laid an egg that couldn't be removed from my party, wouldn't disappear when hatched but instead remain and hatch a new chocobo after I deleted the chocobo it hatched, and would always hatch level a 98 Black Chocobo. It made random battles pretty much impossible to survive, even with a 98 Black Chocobo in my party.

After that happened I made sure to always have several separate save files for my playthrough, and made sure to never have monsters in my army.
