People are complaining,.. but the fact is that thing is going to be sold out in two minutes is Japan and is going to be a trend accessorie over there.

The headphones sure. I actually quite like how the headphones look.

The actual mixer? I don't think so tim.

Well

I mean.

They could have introduced a joycon with a microphone for $100. So at least it's not that. I guess.

Yeah I got nothing. You'd think Nintendo heard about this thing called bluetooth. Maybe it's still coming but Hori just didn't get access to the Switch' bluetooth or something.

Before anyone gets too angry about this:

Nintendo is a family oriented company, and the last time they allowed a direct communication tool in their systems -Swapnote- paedophiles started sending dick to kids.

They want to not be responsible for any bad behavior from the users, and since they don't want for their service to turn into an endless screaming, swearing, racist galore, they count on YOUR smartphone.

Ultimately it's customers fault for being assholes online, don't blame Nintendo

Amazing. The level of Stockholm Syndrome is off the charts.

so, how many people are gonna sell their Switches over this?

remember that voting with your wallet is the only way to make Nintendo listen.

It is indeed incompetence. Read about how they built the online platform in Wii U and how they were given examples of PS3 and XBOX360 functionalities by third party developers. Their answer was "please stop giving these examples because we never tried their systems".

They just do things without researching and end up with solutions of 20 years ago.
Yeah judging from interviews I've read they actively try to reinvent the wheel instead of just using what already exists. They seem to see more value in trying to rederive things from first principles than building on the current state of the industry. It's good for creativity sure, but an important part of the creative process is knowing when to say "No this isn't good, let's just do the thing that works".

No that I think about it, Nintendo is basically that guy who insists on coding his own inferior versions of functions because he's too proud or stubborn to just download the fucking industry-standard library.

Again, protecting the children excuse doesn't fly with me, Switch already has a great parental control system. And I don't think any company set out to be pure evil just to be different.

I can see a logic being
a) Offloading the entire voice chat to another device. But then, they could have just made a unified chat system on Switch.
b) So individual player can have a voice chat for split screen online multiplayer.

Neither excuse just have a simple set up of just plugging in one headphone with a mic.

I really don't understand why people are unable to recognise that this is a solution for on the road!

1. You need a Smartphone for the Hotspot. With this you're able to play online on the go.

2. This is a cable solution because not every Headset has Bluetooth.

And I'm sure that there will be another solution for playing at home. Why can people not wait until Nintendo shows their own solution for at home and on the way online chat and gaming?

So basically it's an optional third-party accessory that allows you to mix the game audio and chat audio into one device?

And you can still use your phone for voice chat via a $10 bluetooth headset or via speakerphone on your lap/next to you/in your shirt pocket and play/chat like you normally would be able to do?

What exactly is the problem here? Why is this worth getting upset over?

I guess this basically confirms it 99% that the Switch will have no vc at all through the system itself, unfortunate. Maybe MHXX will still do their own ingame vc like they did with the WiiU MH, if Nintendo doesn't enforce this mobile app vc nonsense at least.

This little squid looking device still looks interesting though, might be able to be used to mix the Switch and Discord audio output together as well, which could be useful as I tend to mute my console games while on Discord.

Unless you want to have your phone on you...or you want to use wireless headsets like you easily can in every other gaming platform

I'm just telling you what's easy, man. For his specific problem of the cables being too short, extension cables are easy.

It's seriously embarrassing that a gaming giant like Nintendo can't even have proper integrated voice chat capabilities, something that its rivals have had for over a decade. Get with the program Nintendo; invest in a proper online infrastructure.

kids have smartphones too so where's the workaround?

Nonsense. Especially since they brought swapnote back on 3ds, just with a different name...

Because we aren't delusional. This is the "solution" for at home gaming too. Nintendo made it abundantly clear they wouldn't have in system voice chat and that it would be done through a smartphone app.

...hate me...
So the whole dream of "voice chat possibly still integrated in Switch" is dead then?
Not necessarily. It is still a pipedream for sure, for all Nintendo has said about it so far, and probably for the resources left on Switch to create a background-running native voicechat app, but keep in mind that this is just a 3rd party audiomixer for the current situation:

  • Nintendo Switch doesn't have native voicechat at the moment
  • People are using 3rd party apps (like Discord)
  • This device allows those people to mix in in-game audio with 3rd party voicechat
This release doesn't seem to be connected to the Nintendo App at all so far, but rather to provice a solution for Splatoon teams that want to voicechat and listen to in-audio game.

Being honest, I bet "chat headset users" are a niche of a niche in gaming. They loom large in our idea of "hardcore gamers" but I bet they don't even typify hardcore gamers.

Nintendo has burned bridges with more significant demographics before, and come out laughing.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
I dont Voicechat enough to be pissed about this....but yeah this seems like a weird decision.

The funny thing is that this still will be the best Voice Chat setup a Nintendo console ever had...lol. Then again most people use Discord Server nowadays.

Nintendo already announced that this is how voice chat works on Switch. What else do you want them to announce?

What was wrong with voice chat on the Nintendo DS?

You do realize iphones don't have headphones jacks anymore right, and other cellphone companies are following suite right? This being, "the mobile solution" doesn't make this any less dumb.

I'm assuming when you play docked you can still plug it into your phone instead of both the console and phone. That's not ideal but eh. Kinda dumb though since apps like Discord already exist. It's a redundant effort.

Im getting flashbacks to high school when you played around with wires to do series circuits with lamps etc in the physics class..

This is so amateurish and almost fascinating in some way.

Nintendo does not want voice chat they have already proven this. They have run away screaming from the online space since it's inception. If you are expecting any kind of decent online environment or online gaming you should probably look elsewhere.

This is just silly now.

And fuck Reggie. "Don't believe his lies" should be his middle name.

I honestly hope the usual defense force don't defend this one.

I have a shit £20 smart phone at the moment. I don't see the point in anything better as I literally only use it for calls and texts. I use my laptop and tablet for browsing.

The phone is terrible for apps. It's going to be a nightmare using it for this. I love my Switch, but this might be a deal breaker for me in the long run.

Bleh, I guess I could just buy a second hand smart phone for it and it wouldn't be too costly, but this entire thing is rubbing me the wrong way.

The Nintendo mobile app will probably support tablets/iPads too, so you can use that.

This is one method of how voice chat will work with a 3rd party device.

With iPhones not having audio jack's now and the need to be far from the device during TV play, I'm betting there will be more options.

I like the wait and see approach for now.

Because the console launched 3 months ago and we still have absolutely zero official information from Nintendo, right now Hori is speaking for them with this peripheral?
We will wait and see if it has bluetooth support but from the past consoles including PS4, I don't want to make any speculation but it is not looking positive for sure.
And you do realize that hotspot is wireless while this requires a connection to the phone right.

I'm not being funny but, and this isn't a defence of Nintendo because this is some next-gen craziness right here.

But can't we just have the volume up on our TV/console and either our smartphone on loudspeaker, or one earpiece in?

Not saying that's how people should do it, but that's how I'd imagined doing it anyway,
