So this is how Nintendo expects us to use headsets and voice chat on Switch

HYPERBOLE
[hahy-pur-buh-lee]
noun Rhetoric.
obvious and intentional exaggeration.
an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally, as “to wait an eternity.”
Its not really hyperbole, the Switch literally doesn't have voice chat so they will never voice chat on Switch. They'll maybe voice chat through their phone or laptop or something while also playing Switch though.

I can't believe how a company like this, which is a household-name and one of the biggest players in the videogame-industry, has never heard of the word "user-experience".

How can you frustrate your customers or possible customers again and again by ruining easy tasks and features?

Have they ever heard of "user-centered-design"?

Crazy.
But luckily they have fans that would eat shit, if Nintendo would ask them to.

...hate me...
so, how many people are gonna sell their Switches over this?

remember that voting with your wallet is the only way to make Nintendo listen.

Hahahahahaha. There's no stopping the Switch train anymore.

I'm not being funny but, and this isn't a defence of Nintendo because this is some next-gen craziness right here.

But can't we just have the volume up on our TV/console and either our smartphone on loudspeaker, or one earpiece in?

Not saying that's how people should do it, but that's how I'd imagined doing it anyway,
Of course.

This is really about people who want to use headphones.... headphones that you can chat with.

If you use speakers or TV audio, this doesn't matter.

Way to cut off my post and cherry pick one portion

i wasn't cherry-picking anything. your conclusion didn't make sense. you pointed out actual issues with it, but it doesn't lead to anything logical.

like i doubt things went down like this:
'well this will be different'
'but it drains batteries, use up data, and it's really convoluted'
'i said this will be different!'

Then it's incompetence then? How else do we explain nonsense like this?

i think lack of experience is a logical conclusion - nintendo themselves has no real history with online from my memory. maybe ds and maybe super early attempts in the 80s and 90s, but i can't remember who they partnered with wii or wii u, but i recall the wii being a mess and wii u being a step up but not on par with everyone.

it's probably worth considering their problems first:

1. they don't have the technical know-how.
2. the switch is a portable platform and in japan that means something.
3. nintendo's main platforms are switch and mobile

finding a single solution to these problems means probably working with an outside partner (if it's dena that makes sense). they do all the heavy lifting, which means it would make sense if it was over the phone. the switch is a portable platform so the phone turns into a place for a quick game on the internet.

it does look like an afterthought though - especially if this is the only option. if no considerations are made to the us and eu markets where something like this makes no sense or just wouldn't work, then that is a pretty poor planning.

Dude, if they didn't sell their Switch months back when this exact set up was basically expected, why would they do it now.

Being honest, I bet "chat headset users" are a niche of a niche in gaming. They loom large in our idea of "hardcore gamers" but I bet they don't even typify hardcore gamers.

Nintendo has burned bridges with more significant demographics before, and come out laughing.
Their approach isn't even suitable for TV sound system users though since their chat partners will have a nice reverb of game audio unless they turn down the sound to a minium. It's a flawed approach in comparison to on-system voice chat no matter how you try to spin it.

Isn't this just Hori's solution for mixing voice chat and game sound/music through the same headset?

Unsure what has changed. We already knew voice chat was done via mobile phone so you will be able to use Bluetooth or a wired headset and just let game sounds come via sound system or TV.

The thread title is misleading. Should read Hori not Nintendo.

I really don't understand why people are unable to recognise that this is a solution for on the road!

You made your point and people replied to it pointing out the issues with what you said, no value in keep repeating yourself.

but really unsurprised to see you going all in defending this hard after your list fanboy shitpost in the scorpio processor thread.

I am part of the problem i'm sorry! Please forgive me? :p
How can I stay made at that face?

You're forgiven.

use your fucking tv speakers if its 10 feet away because its clearly a fucking tv at that range??

Somebody is angry at the wrong people.

How about an elegant solution, have an audio jack on the controller itself and do the voice chat without any help of an additional device, directly on the console. Or use bluetooth. What about these revolutionary idea?

You're defending a shitty idea and no matter how much spin you put into it, it will still be a shitty idea. Save your nerves.

Why would people expect this setup? I assumed that people were overreacting to the news of voice chat through smartphone, and Nintendo were actually being forward thinking by creating a system that worked well at home and away from the home. I still kinda believe that. But part of that assumption was that Nintendo's app would cleverly link to your in-game somehow. Instead it looks like it'll be a basic chat up with community features.

If the Switch doesnt have a mic in, then there really isnt any other option... a solution would be sending the entire audio from the switch to the phone (wifi direct or over the internet) but it would bring an annoying delay (over the internet specially)...

nintendo must be kidding because they seem to want the switch to become a e-sports machine. with such a shit implementation of voice chat.

edit.
the other scenario would be the phone as the ps4 controller, you just connect the headset there and listen to the conversation while at the same time the TV has the game sound. but then you cant have game+audio in the same earphone. so at home it would owrk out well, but it wouldnt on the go.

this is actually a more likely scenario, this Hori thing was probably made to address this issue (and create another one lol)

Where?

Edit: And just because I have another opinion than you've does not mean that I'm a fanboy ;) Nintendo can improve on many fronts too, not only Sony and Microsoft ;) But this is obviously a solution for on the go. And for that they need the Smartphone for on the go online play and chat. What would be your solution? Everyone is just bitching about that solution, but no one posted a better one!

I hope you kids going to e3 this year dig into Reggie and pals over this. Maybe buy some dollar store headphones to give them as a gift. They should be rewarded for such brilliance.

This is one method of how voice chat will work with a 3rd party device.

With iPhones not having audio jack's now and the need to be far from the device during TV play, I'm betting there will be more options.

I like the wait and see approach for now.

Here's your solution:

A solution for at home. This is obviously the solution for on the road and is in my opinion absolutely fine.

Is it much different than PS4 users plugging a mic into their controller whilst listening to TV/home theater audio?

On which controller? On the pro? On the cradle one? On the joycon? Which joycon? And what if you play arms?

It's obvious why the port is on the dock.
This solution however is dumb no question, there must be a better way.

You do realize iphones don't have headphones jacks anymore right, and other cellphone companies are following suite right? This being, "the mobile solution" doesn't make this any less dumb.
Hahaha

It makes even less sense on the go than at home. That cable is tiny, where are you going to put your phone?

What? Why? Of course it makes sense on the go because you need the Phone for the Hotspot to play online on the go. And at home you have wi-fi or a LAN connection. And you don't know where to put your Phone? Put it on the table next to your Switch, or in your bag, or on your lap ;)

So it's a Switch for the Switch which needs a Switch to switch between voice chat and game audio?
Whhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyy

Honestly a Bluetooth adapter is probably the most elegant solution.

I suppose a headphone lack on the left/1st joycon would serve most situations, assuming you don't need multiple joycon users to have in-game chat. Unless I'm missing something.

On the pro controller, of course. On one of the joycons even if it was needed. Or just make it compatible with bluetooth headsets and solve all the problems.

Because Nintendo fans will give them a pass for anything. I don't care how much I like a product or company, if they do something stupid, I'm calling them out or voting with my wallet.

I don't get it. I mean, I will never use this as I have no interest in online games. But why? I just don't get it, there's no reason for this. and if Nintendo are saying this is a home console, how does this even work at home?!

Not necessarily. It is still a pipedream for sure, for all Nintendo has said about it so far, and probably for the resources left on Switch to create a background-running native voicechat app, but keep in mind that this is just a 3rd party audiomixer for the current situation:

  • Nintendo Switch doesn't have native voicechat at the moment
  • People are using 3rd party apps (like Discord)
  • This device allows those people to mix in in-game audio with 3rd party voicechat
This release doesn't seem to be connected to the Nintendo App at all so far, but rather to provice a solution for Splatoon teams that want to voicechat and listen to in-audio game.

I've been thinking about this more and more, and a thought just occurred to me. The Switch has no native microphone, right? So the only possible way for the device itself to be capable of voice chat would be via plugging into the headphone jack, right?

This is gonna be where my knowledge in this stuff shows that it is lacking, but is it possible that the Switch actually isn't physically capable of supporting headsets with microphones? I vaguely understand that 3.5mm jacks aren't actually completely universal, depending on what it can support and how many rings are on the plug itself.

The Switch 3.5mm jack supports microphones. It's just that Nintendo decided to implement voice chat via a smartphone app instead of the game system.

Thanks :) But I'm able to wait for Nintendo's official solution before I make any conclusions ;)

This is as official as it gets. At home, you can just use the TV speakers and the phone speaker simultaneously if you don't like the solution suggested by Nintendo and HORI here. If there was voice chat through the main system, then this solution here would also not be necessary on the go.
