Way to cut off my post and cherry pick one portion
i wasn't cherry-picking anything. your conclusion didn't make sense. you pointed out actual issues with it, but it doesn't lead to anything logical.
like i doubt things went down like this:
'well this will be different'
'but it drains batteries, use up data, and it's really convoluted'
'
i said this will be different!'
Then it's incompetence then? How else do we explain nonsense like this?
i think lack of experience is a logical conclusion - nintendo themselves has no real history with online from my memory. maybe ds and
maybe super early attempts in the 80s and 90s, but i can't remember who they partnered with wii or wii u, but i recall the wii being a mess and wii u being a step up but not on par with everyone.
it's probably worth considering their problems first:
1. they don't have the technical know-how.
2. the switch is a portable platform and in japan that means something.
3. nintendo's main platforms are switch and mobile
finding a single solution to these problems means probably working with an outside partner (if it's dena that makes sense). they do all the heavy lifting, which means it would make sense if it was over the phone. the switch is a portable platform so the phone turns into a place for a quick game on the internet.
it does look like an afterthought though - especially if this is the
only option. if no considerations are made to the us and eu markets where something like this makes no sense or just wouldn't work, then that is a pretty poor planning.
