Gen IV remakes on 3DS would be such a disappointment. Not because I don't like Gen IV - it or II is my favourite generation. People were originally soured on it largely because of how slow it was, so I think it deserves to at least be on a system that it can run well on instead of being stuck on a platform where it has to suffer from a lot of slowdown.

Other gens also got to skip a handheld generation before getting a remake. I'm hoping that Gen IV does as well.

I would be disappointed if I had to play it using only one screen on the switch. Gen 4 was the first with dual screens and I am still fond of its apps.

Given the history of the franchise, mainly Black and White 2's release on regular DS not 3DS, but also how mainline Pokemon games don't generally release until 2 years into a new console's life, I'm expecting whatever gets announced will be on 3DS.

It would be odd to me if D/P remakes or a Stars third version were to release on Switch. Has a Pokemon generation ever been split across consoles like that? Gen VII started on 3DS with Sun and Moon, so the next games in Gen VII will likely also be on 3DS.

I very much hope I am wrong, but I prefer to be pessimistic about these directs.

What ever happened to that Fire Emblem x Pokemon game mentioned a while back?
Pokemon Conquest killed it before it started. We got Tokyo Mirage Sessions instead, sorta.

EDIT: Aw, heck. I wasn't even close.

If you consider the Gameboy Color a distinct platform from the original Gameboy, then Gen II fits. Gold and Silver are compatible with the original Gameboy, while Crystal is a Color exclusive.

People keep saying "history of the franchise" but what's to say things aren't gonna change sometime? Maybe Nintendo specifically asked for Pokémon on Switch in the first year to help the system become a success. This is also in the interest of The Pokémon Company, as they need Switch to be big, too.

I hope you're right.

Given the fact that Black and White 2 exist instead of Gray and the fact that we never got Z are reason enough for me to believe they don't have to stick to tradition.

To be fair, the rumors circulating by Eurogamer and others are why people are expecting a Switch release, otherwise I think most folks wouldn't be expecting Pokemon on it this early

Yes, Crystal is Gameboy colour exclusive.

Good point. I forgot about Crystal. The lack of third versions in recent years is a departure too so who knows what to expect.

Despite the rumours, I'm still pessimistic. I'd rather be pessimistic, be proved wrong and be pleasantly surprised then to hope for Pokemon Stars HD on Switch releasing this November and end up feeling disappointed if it doesn't happen. This is my approach to Nintendo Directs at this stage.

this is really unsettling to me for some reason

I think it's the resemblance to sonic fanart

But no single platform has gotten more than one Pokemon remake. 3DS already got ORAS.

Before B/W, no one platform had received more than one gen, either. Times change. (Well, counting GS as GBC, since it was optimized for that.)

Pretty much what I was about to say.

It's no secret, GF's Pokemon on 3DS is poorly optimized. In part because they're kinda lazy and "future proofed" the models making them very high rez for a 3DS game.

I for one don't want yet another sluggest low framerate 3D Pokemon on 3DS.
But we will see.

I'm honestly super scared they're not going to announce a Switch game. I love the 3DS but playing Echoes just makes me think of the Switch the entire time.

I was just thinking today "May is over and there's been no pokemon announcement, guess Stars was fake."
I was just about to think the same thing, or that maybe Nintendo convinced The Pokémon Company to reveal Stars at E3. But nope, TPC's still going to the beat of their own drum.

So Stars on Switch is pretty much a lock for $60?
I'm honestly not sure. If anything, the real question should be if Stars (assuming it's Switch-bound) will be bound by the paid online service or not. There was mention that most (not all) games with online play would be part of said service, so maybe The Pokémon Company got Nintendo to make an exception for them.

Since you already confirmed that D/P remakes will be on 3DS only, do you believe the announcement tomorrow will also be for 3DS, and not Switch?

I believe they will announce something for the switch as well, but probably a spin off. Pokken makes sense IMO.

But no single platform has gotten more than one Pokemon remake. 3DS already got ORAS.

Sample size is way too small to make this into any sort of rule. Before the DS, we also never had two generations on a single platform before (counting GBC as separate). Before BW2, there had never been a direct sequel before.

No, I just don't think they are going to create a demand they can't supply. The switch will receive Stars and possibly get 8 in the future, but not the remakes.
To be fair, the 3DS already got its remakes. Plus you can still play Diamond/Pearl on the 3DS.

if we are indeed getting a switch port of sun/moon then the future games will likely receive a switch version as well

I see a lot of post saying they will be disappointed if STARS is not announced, but wait why are you assuming this has to be to STARS? Is that even the real name? It's only because a rumor?

ITT: People forget Fire Emblem x Pokémon was an idea from Nintendo SPD but The Pokémon Company were already working on Pokémon Conquest at the time.

Ashamedly, I never finished Pokemon Sun so looking forward to jumping into Stars on Switch, even if it is a direct sequel. Man, Nintendo going to have my hyperventilating well into next week at this rate. A Pokemon Direct before the main even next week? Jheeeezeee.
