I don't believe Geoff, why else would they have that robot $400 advert? Some sort of trade-in program? As wobbly as Microsoft's PR sometimes is, I don't think they'd mess up like that.

It's $400, or give me a silly tag.
That robot ad was a coincidence. The number most likely references the release date

Calm Killer

In all media, only true fans who consume every book, film, game, or pog collection deserve to know what's going on.
It'll not make much of an affect if its $499. That is like xbox one release all over again.

Sucks major ass if true. Feels like DOA at that price. Still getting it but extremely disappointed.

Now I'm REALLY hoping they bring exclusives. Otherwise, they've learned nothing.

$500 is Microsoft shooting themselves in the head. I respect their business sense enough to believe they won't repeat the mistakes of 4 years ago.

I'm still convinced it will be $400.

Yeah. Before that I was sure it would be 500, but that weird ad made it seem it would be 400. Unless there is some other hidden message in that ad, it's gotta be 399, under 400. Otherwise it would be so fuckin random I'd have to assume John McCain posted it during his Comey rant.

Here's the thing, DF got the sneak preview and stated it seemed like a $499 console.

The general notion among consumers is that $499 is not a mass-market price. Also, the XO reveal is still fresh in people's minds so $499 is basically turn the channel and whatevs to most people.

If you have fallout from the price, there was no reason to even do it in the first place, just make some games instead.

I think $499 would be ok, if it were marketed as a new console with it's own exclusives (not available on X1 or PC), not just an upgraded Xbox.

I think it will be a tough sell, but I'm eagerly awaiting what MS has to say.

I can pay up to a max of £425 quid day one if it comes with say an elite controller or something. Any more than that, I'm going to wait. Its not that I can't afford paying more, its that I don't want to.

I wonder if MS would put $499 in their rehearsals to throw leakers off and set expectations, then announce a cheaper price during the conference?

I said it in my previous post -- I'm honestly thinking this is possible. Not that it's what they are doing but simply that it's possible.

There's been so much positivity with Scorpio that $399 would be the perfect announcement. $499 would end most of that positivity in my opinion. We'll see though.

Ya I think this would be a great strategy since expectations are out of control. You have Giant Bomb saying they might come in at $349 this week.

Remember when everyone thought the Vita was going to be $399? People were blown away by the $249 price point.

I haven't even got a 4k TV $499 LOL RIP

Then you're not who they're selling it to anyway....unless you just want downsampling.

As someone with a 4k TV, I'm interested. Also 4k State of Decay, Crackdown, and Forza in multiple rooms (without multiple PC builds) sounds nice.

(Scorpio games are going to look great, but I hate the way MS marketing is putting "True 4K " on everything when some games won't be, and most games would be better off using the power in another way)

Calling bs on 'true 4k' on everything. Prove it

I still think it is the hardcore Xbox fan that is going to adopt this console so why sell at a loss. This is the smart move from ms. Sell it at a profit and make it seem like a premium device like the elite controller. It would be a huge risk to take a loss on mid gen hardware just to try to gain marketshare from Sony as the best selling sku will still be the one s. Sony is partnered with huge games and are ready to drop price, bundle big games and ramping up on exclusive games so it will be hard to counter.

Things can't stay 399 forever, inflation is a thing, it doesn't bypass consoles price.

399 in 2013 is 420 today. People want things but don't want to pay for them. Demand 399 and then complain it's not good enough. Rinse repeat.

I'm on my mobile so it's tough.
1. The reveal video claims no limits on power and it's a true 4K gaming machine
2. That quick speck sheet. With the 4 numbers and black background say it's "The first true 4K console"
3. They etched "4K" into the chip
4. The mixr stream tweet was "experience true 4K"
5. "Microsoft's 'Project Scorpio' Xbox promises true 4K gaming" link

Just off the top of my head.

499

Ms doesn't expect it to fly off shelves, it'll sell to hardcore but most sales will come from x1s. They can then progressively drop the price as sales slow for scorpio.

Also, when price is in doubt it seems it always ends up in the higher side of expectations/rumors. See switch

Also correct me if I'm wrong but Geoff Keighley isn't exactly someone who posts leaks, we're talking about Dorito Pope himself here. Perhaps he has information he is using to speculate on, or he's been fed false info by MS as part of a DFS-esque advertising technique.

There defenatly aiming this at 1080 peeps as well otherwise what was the point of letting the dev use the power as they pls.

Honestly, those saying that "Microsoft learned nothing" from the original Xbox One launch price are not considering that Scorpio will be considerably more powerful than PS4 Pro whereas the original Xbox One was actually less powerful than PS4.

It's hardly a surprise it would cost more.

They need good PR.

Sales are now moot, Xbox in Europe is dead.

Something, anything.

Or what's the point?
The point is to make money from the hardcore. I love my PS4 Pro and it looks excellent on my TV and I'll be looking to but this too.

I just don't think MS can afford to lose money on something that may not be a massive seller.

True but MS needs something to get the will of the fans back on their side. I personally have multiple friends who were Xbox 360 100% but switched to the PS4 after the XB/Ps4 launch. Kind of surprised me honestly. And I doubt I'm the only person friends who did this.

It's also not the only card they are playing in their hand. They'll have a very aggressively priced x1s in the market and can drop scorpio's price as needed

A premium device isn't made for the mass market. In any case, the basic Xbox One with Kinect was $500 in 2013, so it's not like MS is above charging that much. At least this time you're getting a bigger hard drive, a much more powerful console, with a 4k bluray player for around the same price. As far as games go, yes they need to improve here. However I don't think they necessarily need a bunch of exclusives. They just need to make sure that Sony gets less exclusives. Not getting ports of games like Nioh, Nier, and many others is what's hurting them more than lack of exclusives to me. I don't even think the 360 had that many exclusives, but Japan was still making many of their games for both PS3 and 360.

The issue is the system doesn't live in a vacuum. It's coming a year later so if you scale up the tech from the pro to the scorpio you should expect to see the same price range. There are other factors to consider though: uhd drive, manufacturing costs, etc. That could contribute to them having a higher SRP. Still it seems a bit odd they would go to that 500 price point again. Maybe they assume the pro won't receive a discount this fall so they're price is justified.

Yeah, I'm not that convinced about PS4 Pro getting a cut this soon. Pachter says it could get it as early as tomorrow at the conference, but what financial sense would this make for Sony? Not sure.

I might buy one. Haven't jumped in on Xbox yet this gen as PS4 has had those sweet Japanese games and exclusives. But if this shows well at the conference, I'll bite.

However, at $499 and whatever that will be in £ (probs £450 because Fuck the actual exchange rate, right) this won't help them make up any ground on Sony. Pretty brain dead move. But it costs what it costs and selling at a loss probably won't help them now anyway.

1. Its a reveal vid to hype u up a year ago
2. Need a link
3. Its on a chip ull never see doesn't say 'true 4k to ur earlier quote
4. Mixer promoting mixer... really reaching here
5. Engadget article not made by MS

To your point if it was everywhere, then MS will call it xbox 4k. If so then you're rite.

£450 is perfectly fine for what's in there.

£450 is totally fine if you're totally fine paying it. Like I said. I'll probably bite now if they show some cool games because I bought an OLED for the pro and so far, not much is making the most of it.

But £450 isn't fine when you need to catch up by 10s of millions of consoles.

At £450 it's gonna be an even more niche proposition than it is. Even if they hit that so say magic $399 that people want. It still won't catch them up.

So what's the fucking hype for a niche console aimed at the existing and paltry Xbox One install base? lol. Why wait a year for a Jag/Polaris-based console that's $100 more than the competition. Can't be like PS4 and launch $100 cheaper and offer more power? Out of concern for them, $499 actually has an adverse affect on the brand. Better if it didn't exist and the money went elsewhere if you're not aiming at mindshare.

P.S.- The Xbox 360 was $399 and had a BoM of like $525. There was value and excitement. Guess we'll see in a few hours.

You missed 360 Slim, so Xbox 6, I posted that a few posts above, I'd like that. Would be pronounced Xbox Sex in Sweden. Can't go wrong with that ;)

Haha that would be great! "Hej, jag vill köpa Xbox sex!" "Ööööh ok, vänta här!" *ringer till polisen* or "tjenare, vill du spela på min Xbox sex?"

Haha 🤣
