The Verge w/ Phil Spencer: "PS4 Pro is a Xbox One S competitor, not true 4K system."

Phil Spencer is one of the slimiest fucks in the industry. I love how he deluded a lot of people into thinking when he became head of the division that it was a change of the guard haha.

I asked this in another thread but it got buried really fast.

Do these specs really even matter that much when devs still have to work within the confines of the original Xbox One? Yeah they can push 4k, 60fps, and graphical effects but the game has to still run on the OG Xbox One. It almost feels to me like they put in more specs so they can spout out numbers. It reminds me of when the Jaguar marketing kept using "64bit" as a buzz word.

You know he said that just to rustle Sony fan's jimmies. He loves a dig.

Oh I thought he found console wars distasteful? Or maybe he's just a disingenuous marketing man who will say whatever it takes at any given moment for a win? Hmm.

It makes sense. The Pro is a competitor to the XB1 S sales wise.

Unfortunately, MS does not have anything competing with the base PS4.

I look at PS4 Pro as more of a competitor to Xbox One S than I do to Xbox One X

I get what you're trying to say Phil but, just don't.

When both consoles are limited to 30fps in most cases due to their shit CPU's I really couldn't care less which does better 4K, that being said I'll probably pick up a XOX near release anyway, because if there's anything I've learnt from owning a Pro it's that even if a game isn't running in full 4K your still almost guaranteed to get the less shit version of whatever game that is due to the boost mode.

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.
Sony ain't dropping Pro price till next year

We'll get Bundles galore for $399.99 with a game or two packed in to give you the sense of "savings" or game + like 6 months of PS+

I think PS4 Slim might get cut to $199.99 for insanity reasons for the holidays as standalone and $249.99 with Bundle stuff

PS4 Pro price is currently 349 euro in the Netherlands. That offer includes Horizon Zero Dawn. So Sony is already cutting the price of the PS4 Pro. It's probably a temporary offer, but it proves Sony can cut the price at the moment and will do it again when they see reason to so (i.e. holidays). I'm absolutely sure that when the Xbox One X is released in November Sony will bring the price down to 349 euro again.

Remind me what kind of 4k rendering and UHD drive the PS4 Pro has.

You realize there's a bunch of native 4k games on the pro and not every X game will be native 4k? Ass Creed origins was confirmed to be dynamic 4k despite Microsoft's remarks about it.

He's not wrong.

The Pro stands a good chance of at least matching sales of the S over the next 12 months.

X1 will still be the baseline. Same for the PS4 vs PS4 Pro. But PC gaming hasnt been any different in that regard; it's just that the lowest spec is more clear now for developers. They'll probably optimise a game first for regular PS4/X1, and then start tweaking to increase performance on Scorpio / Pro. And these are '4K boxes' first (or atleast attempting to); and no 'framerate doublers' or anything like that. If a game runs 30FPS on OG X1 / PS4, chances are that it will be 30FPS on Scorpio / PS4 Pro as well.

These are the most technologically similar consoles ever. Most households don't have tvs that can tell the difference and even when they do, even digital foundry admits checkered board 4k is basically the same as native 4k at normal viewing distances.

Pretty embarassing answer, but I'll blame Phil's E3 fever for possibly not thinking too much about that question. I still like this dude. He's a PR person, but comes very sincere at times.

"what kind of 4k rendering"

Excuse me, but what?

Do people consider the PS4 Pro a real and full 4K system? (If we leave out this pseudo-4K checkerboard crap)

PS4 Pro has a lot of native 4K games. What makes a system "full 4K"? Ability to run all games at 4K resolution? In that case I'll be very surprised if we get such system during the next decade.

Are you trying to say nonsense like SonyGAF?
I'm trying to say that Gaf has an EXTREMELY short memory and wants what they can't have until the next thing comes along to hate. People shit on Sony for being unfriendly to consumers and not having backwards compatibility. MS does it and they act like no one uses or wants it. Sony brings out the Pro and everyone complains about it and their 4K solution. MS brings what they Gaf originally wanted, then they complain again. A few years back they complained about how MS had abandoned indie gamers and MS focuses on them since they have a lack of AAA studios and they say it's the worst conference "ever"

It's really the only explanation for all of this to me. PS4 Pro has been a great system for me but I really do want more. Not being able to play MLB The Show 17 in true 4K at a smooth frame rate has shown that to me for sure. I'll buy the Xbox X under the assumption that I did with the Pro. I will play my multi platforms on whatever system offers the best overall experience.

I actually bought a PS4 Pro + Horizon + Extra controller for 380 @ bol.com; that was a pretty good offer ^_^

It's reverse 900p all over again.

Meh people who don't pay attention to gaming will listen to this PR. You see it in other industries all the time.

Speech like that put down the MS brand and reputation, he can't even touch Sony...believe me I was speechless, couldn't believe, even knowing him.

Well, I wish them good luck on beating PS4 Pro, with that 349€ pricetag. PS4 is in the lead now, so apart from XBONE exclusives there's no valid reason to shell out €150 extra.

Sure Phil.

But the fact is that there is one sitting in my house and I'll probably never buy the XboneX unless you actually out some exclusive games on the thing.

I think they must have fallen on hard times if they can't even keep FIFA and CoD marketing agreements. As far as Phil comments, I haven't seen any game that has wowed me on their console, true 4K or not.

There was a way to easily make this statement be true.
Properly upgrade the CPU to one from this century. That would have separated XOX as something different; something much more capable in several aspects.

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
Kinda funny, Sony did they same thing with Xbox one vs PS4. Now that its reversed Phil rubbing it in.

Doesn't matter either way really to me, just going to get my 3rd party stuff on x now instead of the pro.

Well that explains a lot.

All this time we thought the XBO was a PS4 competitor, when it was really competing with other sub HD consoles.

Chili Con Carnage!
He's probably right, the pro is a much smaller incremental step.

Of course being in competition with something and winning that competition are two different things, for my money Sony is winning every competition they are a part of right now.

Has he seen God of War and Spider-Man?

EDIT: Shit, I should have just said "Spider-Man", maybe that would have been the new Scorpio meme. Ah well, C'est la vie ...

Fake news.

But I see their marketing strategy. Let's see if they can get that to stick.
No one will hear it in the real world that's the thing.

I have a couple of friends who will be buying the xbox one x pretty much guarantee they won't hear this kind of pr

The entire e3 ms presser like every year sounds so delusional. They really need to hire a non Microsoft writer and provide manager. So many platitudes and generic statements so tiring to watch

Oh boy...

I mean, it was pretty clear at this time last year that Microsoft felt this way. I don't think they would have made as big of a push to get 4K support in the Xbox One S if they didn't. Obviously the hardcore audiences like we have here on Gaf won't agree with this statement at all, but I'd be curious to see what less informed people think.

Microsoft certainly has an uphill battle if they plan to pitch Xbox One S as the cheap alternative to the PS4 Pro while Scorpio is the "better" version. I just... I don't fully get it, but you do you Phil.

Is it legal to make this kind of statements? To promote your product by saying how inferior is the competitor's,whether that's true or not.

So apparently it's hard to develop hardware and first-party games at the same time, that a focus on one has greatly impacted the other.

What a shock. I'm sure his peers at Sony and Nintendo can empathise...

No, they don't.

I mean, I'll take a powerful console over exclusives.
