Sensible rpg character designs in video games

It's kind of cheating but P5 is a jRPG , and this is sensible and cool

Nothing sensible about being a thief wearing a bright red tight and long tail guaranteed to get in the way to commit heist.

I don't know what happened in the 2000s to where Japanese designers felt like they need to attach 10,000 accessories to characters. Their 90s designs were simple but very cool.

Looking at this box art just makes me want to play this game

Influence moved from Ghibli to whatever light novel adaptation is popular now.

Capes can be sensible

Good point but when do capes make sense at all? Maybe for some northern-type warriors who wear capes to protect them from the cold weather, snow etc.

It weirded me out that furturistic high-tech armors in Destiny had capes and furs attached. This doesn't make any sense.

I totally agree with you. Tiz in bravely default design was great, in the second game though he lost all his style...

Currently finishing up Bravely Default and was looking into Bravely Second and just realized the character on the cover was Tiz. WTH happened?

She is a very nice design. If I recall, her proportions are still very otaku inspired, but the armor and clothing all work well and she isn't showing huge amounts of skin in battle.

Also, shoutout to Lady Maria.

Not including the sequels, this design is pretty sensible.

Could you explain how?
I just dont see it. Weird cloak attached to one shoulder guaranteed to unbalance and get in the way of drawing that sword. Odd armour piece just to display rank chevrons. Most soldiers would just have it sewn on to their upper body gear rather than have another strap across their upper chest. Most impractical satchel going, attached to leg with three straps and a loose belt around the waist. What is going on there, again like the cloak it looks restrictive, obstructive and unbalancing all at the same time. It's a fantasy fashion piece where the designer is going 'asymmetry is cool, it looks different to what normal people wear!' rather than anything an adventurer might actually choose to go about their business in.

There's a reason for it. Major spoilers though. Just finish the game. I really like that part of the story myself.

Cool, I'll hopefully finish it up soon. Trying to decide if I want to jump into Bravely Second afterwards or not. Soo many games I need to get through! I've only barely touched Persona 5 lol.

Noctis from Final Fantasy XV, probably the first time Tetsuya Nomura designed a main character without going over the top with their looks.

That is because not Nomura but the fashion label Roen actually designed the clothing.
Apart from the clothing Noctis is the typical Nomura pretty-boy with spiky hair.

So otakus have bodies like that?

Let's see: she looks 15, huge tits, microscopic hot pants that leave half the ass exposed, let's show some thighs because modern anime trope, pointless thin fabric on her hips that makes it look like she's wearing a thong underneath. I hate everything about this design. And the rest of the XC2 ones I've seen aren't much better.

It's so bizarre to me that the first XC in Wii was one of my favorite RPGs I've ever played and yet in physically repulsed by this sequel. What happened?

Actually this XC2 character is the sort of shit that comes to my mind when someone says "otaku inspired". Not the badass and sensibly clothed red haired you were quoting.

I think it's weird to limit the thread to RPG designs. Lots of great examples from games that aren't necessarily RPGs. Furthermore, what's the thread's stance on games with character creation? Does it count as the kind of "character design" this thread is after if the player had a significant hand in the design?

Regardless of the answer, Dark Souls wins handily.

Also have to give points to Dragon's Dogma:

Love this kind of armor design, where they clearly 100% used references from real armor and actually respected it.

Lots of things posted here are...the opposite of sensible to me, lmao. Most are cool, but I wouldn't call them "sensible."

Naminé for me.

I wouldn't call going to battle in your pajamas "sensible" either.

Shorts, sweater and a hoodie.

This is the strangest pair of shorts and sweater I've seen. Why does it look so mech-y? What are those things around his arms? Is he wearing pants inside his shorts or are those extensions of his shorts?

I feel you. Bravely Second is just as great as Bravely Default, but also feels like more of the same. Absolutely worth playing eventually but I think it does make sense to take a break between them.

I don't know what happened here but at least that character doesn't have her ass and tits exposed like Sharla from the first Xenoblade.

Naminè isn't a fighter though. I also just realized her head is HUGE. Do all of the kids have big heads in KH?

The cast of FFVIII is probably Nomura at his most restrained: most of the player characters are wearing clothing that seems downright comfy.

I disagree. He was the most down to earth in the first two parasite eves. Let's not talk about the forbidden third game.

Still managed to give him two belts though.

I've always particularly enjoyed some of the character designs in the Arland trilogy.

What's unique about them is that they are not outlandish or garish, but still very unique and not at all boring. Esty's design there in particular is one of my all-time favourites.

Yup.

Folklore comes to mind:

The Witcher series is pretty grounded, for the most part. So much so, in fact, that some think the art in the games is just boring. However, since it's already been mentioned, I'll say Kingdom Come: Deliverance. It still has to come out, but given the premise I guess everything will be as "sensible" as it can be.

If anybody wore that in public outside of a cosplay convention they'd get laughed at

Cmon mate if someone went out in a suit of armor they'd get laughed at. People confusing 'sensible' with 'modern fashion' need to rethink what they're looking for.

Also smh no one posted my boi

Why do you think I've been to Japan so many times?

I may be misremembering images of her without her armor on. You're right, that terrible XB2 design is much more fitting.

Probably thinking of something else. I don't recall Titania ever appearing without armor

Joke post?

This is one ding I have with Xenoblade 2. It feels like the character designer is conflicted between going to ecchi fanservice and going to more "standard" JRPG, so they had to compromise with a form-fitting top and a short-shorts bottom. Or in other words, Light Novel waifu designs 101.

My libido, of course isn't complaining.
