The sequel to Sony's original response on blocking console crossplay

Edit: I've seen the Xbox Live deflection come up a few times so I just want to be crystal clear for anyone reading this OP: Sony's objection has nothing to do with the XBL login on Minecraft, they have never said that is their objection, and it is no different from signing in to uPlay or EA Access. Microsoft will be the one running the dedicated servers, so of course you have to use their login. No, it won't require an additional subscription. I promise you there is not an informed Switch owner alive who is complaining about this.

Furthermore, Rocket League will feature crossplay with Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC. The third party developers of that game, Psyonix, have explicitly said that Sony is blocking the PS4 from playing with the other consoles. Xbox Live is not involved whatsoever, again proving that this is not the sticking point.

So to summarize:

  • Not even Sony is claiming that the XBL login for Minecraft servers is an issue
  • A Gold subscription is NOT required so this is no different from uPlay or EA Access
  • Sony is blocking third party Rocket League crossplay with Xbox and Switch, so XBL is definitely not the issue
  • Did I mention that Rocket League crossplay doesn't involve XBL and is also being blocked?

It's great for Phil to respond on it, but let's be real here.

It will fall on deaf ears because that is not the primary reason for Sony to refuse cross-play.

But this is exactly why Sony will never be honest about the real reason, because being honest about it opens up Phil to respond with even hotter fire.

Phil responding on 'safety' lie only makes Sony look incompetent, rather than greedy.

Great response! I never thought "think of the children" would prevent crossplay from hapoening, much less actually cause concerns of the safety of children in Minecraft specifically.

A much more real response than Playsation's end. Honestly though I'm sure he's happy as hell Sony isn't making it crossplay.

It plays beautifully for them giving them great press and Sony unfavorable press.

Remember a few years ago when Sony said they were totally open for cross platform play? :\

It really is a completely ridiculous statement for Sony to make. Of course Microsoft is going to moderate and keep the game safe, they own Minecraft so its in their best interest to make it safe for kids!

Sony obviously just doesn't want people to use xbox live, wish they wouldn't make up dumb and semi insulting bs about 'the safety of the children'. As a person with a PS4 who was considering getting minecraft for it (until I learned crossplay won't work that is), I hope they work something out with Microsoft and change their minds.

Sony's response here was really just unacceptable. Say it's for business reasons, make up technical shit, but this? Just no.

It ultimately doesn't matter though. Because outside of this no one is really concerned about it. And by that I mean people outside of this small sphere.

Times have changed...

A Microsoft spokesperson agreed with that sentiment: "We have a high level of expectation for our game developers to ensure that all Live experiences remain top notch. Because we can't guarantee this level of quality, or control the player experience on other consoles or gaming networks, we currently do not open our network to games that allow this cross-over capability."

Jim Ryan went to the same PR school most likely.

If Sony owned Mojang, Microsoft would be doing the same thing. They are direct competitors, it makes sense. Nintendo, PC, and mobile, are not direct competitors to Microsoft. I think it sucks that PS Minecraft is going to be the shit version, but luckily we can all play it literally every where else.

I doubt he's happy with this. The better Minecraft on PS4 is, the more people will buy it.

it was kind of a disgusting insinuation by Sony with that comment now that I think about it and Phil spoke on it.

This whole back and forth has been wild.

But really, yeah, Jim Ryan's comment on safety of children was bizarre and pretty insulting for a game where safety of its players, especially children, would be top priority with how cultural it has become. And with how kids are the primary audience.

And yeah, that bit on Nintendo too, they can be very overprotective of children on their system, but they're on-board.

If you think the above is what will happen, Sony is indeed incompetent as shit.

No, the more likely reality is Sony is well aware that they will get called out for their anti-consumer stance against cross-play, and have discussed with PR agencies what the best "bullshit" excuse is, and who is the best "Sony executive" to answer questions on that matter.

Everyone, from Shawn, to Andrew, to Jim are 100% all-in on this. It is not some PR slip-up, it is a mutually agreed "deflection" tactic that they've decided is their best answer in a lose-lose scenario. ( no way for them to look good in this )

The fact that Phil Spencer called out their bullshit on the 'safety excuse' instead of calling them out for being 'greedy' means that Sony's deflection tactic has worked in minimizing the negative PR that could've resulted from their decision.

haha...i wonder if jim ryan just made that shit up on the fly or if that was actually discussed internally by sony as the excuse he should use if someone asked.

what ever happened to "no comment"

everyone tweet for crossplay should include the hashtag #4thechildren from now on lol

In all honesty I really think as the "Players" we need to really take this home with Sony and tell them WE ARE FOR THE PLAYERS!!! Because this is the same thing we all banded together and did when Microsoft Effed up at E3 2013 and made them 180 on all the bad they brought to the Xbox ecosystem

He did make the shit up. He pretty much gave the real reason at first. Pretty much saying it's a business decision. They he decided to make up some shit that he thought sounded good.

I'm hoping that we can get Sony to change their tune on cross play and BC titles. Their recent statements on them have been awful.

Business reasons will open them up to looking greedy, which is probably, in their mind, the least preferred option.

Technical shit choice is 100% a lie that can be refuted at this point, when devs are saying they're one-button-press away from making it happen.
