Cave Story + (Switch) review thread

This is out on Tuesday? Shiiiit. I am off all week. Gonna hit this shit hard.

Also, I'm pretty sure I accidentally pre-ordered two copies from Best Buy, and they won't let me cancel it 'cause it's so close to release.

Can't wait. Would have loved to keep the 16bit look but they seem to have put in some work on the new look. Down for a GCU physical version.

1. Is this widescreen?
2. How does this compare to the PC version?

1: Yes.
2: I did a video comparison of Switch vs. PC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7t-Acqxdyh8&feature=youtu.be

Does it have the Machine Gun Challenge? Is there anything missing from Cave Story+ on PC outside of the ability to switch between old/new graphics?
Never played the PC version, so I can't say. I've only unlocked one of the Challenges. I'd imagine Machine Gun challenge is still available.

Never played this before, but I'm intrigued by what I've heard about it. I need to pick this up once it's released in Europe.

Nintendo Wire - 9.5/10

The bottom line is this: If you’ve played one of the more recent, updated versions of Cave Story, there’s nothing much for you here. If you’ve only played the original freeware release, then consider picking this one up, especially if you’re interested in all the additions. And if you haven’t played Cave Story at all… remedy that immediately, whether with this addition or one of the myriad of others. It’s truly one of the finest experiences I’ve ever had the pleasure to play and write about.

Going to buy it physical because it's one of my favorite games ever.

$30 is unfortunate. The Switch tax is real. I think I bought this on Steam for $10 five years ago.

I would like to buy it digital for the Switch when I see it for $10-20.

Own the Steam version...which I regrettably haven't played that much of, but I won't be able to pass up owning a physical version for Switch and hopefully see it through to completion this time.

The Switch version looks much better, minus the fugly water (neither version is particularly good looking in that regard though).

Decided to pick up at launch despite the co-op not launching til later. Not like I haven't already played through the game multiple times!

Is there an option to use the original soundtrack?

while I like the Remastered soundtrack, I prefer the original.

Although I'm happy with the price for the physical version (especially considering what it comes with) I have to agree that it's a pretty rough break for digital-only folks.

Personally, as long as Nicalis keep having manuals and other goodies for their first-print of physical copies I'll continue to give them my money on day-1. Can't wait to hear what Blade Strangers is coming with; here's hoping for some Umihara Kawase stuff!

Nicalis is so fucking incompetent regarding EU... on PS4 1001 spikes took more than 1 year to come. More than effin one year. They are unable to give release dates or window so let's not even talk about simultaneous release. It's like they management is stuck in the 90ies.
Very hard to support such a publisher :(

Oh wow, those are some nice bonuses that come with the game! I've never played Cave Story and was debating whether I should cancel, but the reviews and bonuses have pushed me over the edge to keep it.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
It's a little weird for NWR to call the Wiiware version the definitive one.

I pulled a comparison chart from here: http://cavestory.wikia.com/wiki/Version_differences

NiXPn1ml.png

Chart isn't updated for the Switch release. Outside of the option for the original graphics and some tweaks to the updated graphics, it's pretty much 1:1 with the PC release? I know Nicalis promised an update for co-op support later, right? That's about all they're adding to this release over previous ones?

No, they added content to the Switch version. Dunno what it actually entails, but yeah. And there will be a co-op update at some point.

Wait, is it just a booklet? I thought it was also including an Audio CD? Did that not happen or did you just not mention it? (I'm trying to decide whether it's worth importing :p)

Mine also came with the Cd. Just didn't mention it since I don't have a Cd player at all in my house so it's pretty useless right now.

Also got to remember is the book and Cd are only in the first print editions of the game.
