New Daytona game for arcades announced

He was still leading AM2 until 2008, so probably had some input but VF5 was a "passing of the torch", and a very successful one at that.
no he wasn't.
he left his position at AM2 in 2003 and formed a new small team within the company with few members from AM2 known as Digitalrex (name changed to AM Plus after merger with Sammy) back then he was still an overall creative officer though but since 2008 he was nothing but an adviser to the company until now.
AM2 is lead by Hiroshi Kataoka all this time.

this is cool, but clearly something that would bomba hard on consoles. would rather sega give us a console geared sequel loaded with content and modes, but i dont see that happening...

Doesn't make sense. Why would it fail on consoles?

Hey Sega now that this is announced how about BC for Xbone on Daytona HD..?

If they do it, please please PLEASE also bring it to Steam and fix the lobby room functionality for it's so skeleton, that alone brought down the appeal of playing the game online because no one can find each other. Approve it by doing the following:

1) Allow people to see how many people are in what server
2) Give people the option to select a server
3) Give people options to select regions
4) Heck, ... just copy origins, Quake LIve or whatever in order to do it properly.

If there is a TO DO list we can give to Sega to improve the multiplayer lobby then I'll be happy to voice my input.

Am I supposed to be reading it as Daytona Championship USA 3?

Because that's almost as bad as Sonic & Allstars Racing Transformed, and I'll just call it Daytona USA 3 regardless.

Hype!

Is this likely to remain arcade-exclusive forever, or maybe a timed exclusive ?.
It's impossible to tell

What's certain is a home port would not happen for years. Have to make the arcade version an event and focus on making that a success before anything else

Yeah, I understand. Well, at least let them bring Daytona USA 2 home. It's 18 years old.

I can't wait to see this. I'll have to travel to play it as our arcades only carry older coin-ops but that's fine, I'm just excited that it's happening.

Hoping SEGA having the Daytona license means a Daytona 2 port...now is the time for a battle on the edge!

It certainly deserves one. It's (still) a fantastic game.

Kinda disappointed they removed the slot machine from Three Seven Speedway, but the graphics look nice and it appears that the cars are true to real life.

Can't wait to see it in action.

From the sounds of it, that's just what it would be like in some kind of toned down "kid mode", along with a more forgiving handling model.

This game needs a lot more work, it seems.

Wouldn't expect to see it in arcades until late summer or fall.

Last week Team VVV had the chance to try the the latest version of the WIP game. Seems like Daytona 3 won't be any good, at all.

First of all, before ripping this game a new one, I just wanna give a huge, HUGE and VERY SINCERE round of applause and thank you to Alan for these impressions and video. Wow Alan, I've seen a lot of your videos but this is by far my favorite one yet! Absolutely CRACKING job my friend!! I can feel your passion and honesty and know exactly where you're coming from!

Now, after watching the video, I'm having quite a difficult time disagreeing with your points. I mean holy shit.....the handling looks fucking dire! What the hell are these muppets doing? Why is there a fucking Grand Canyon-sized deadzone in the steering? What's with the Daytona 2001 Network Edition-esque car handling? The way the car is moving looks straight out of the DC game. And the worst offender to me personally...up/down sequential shifting????? Like, are you fucking kidding me Sega???? Who the fuck decided it was a good idea to put sequential shifting into this iconic franchise? Part of what gave the original its identity was the 4-way gear box, and the different ways you can go about drifiting using the 4-1-3-4 strategy. Holy shit did they *EVER* fuck this up!

Man I dunno....if they don't overhaul this game and quickly, it could end up being of the biggest disappointments of 2017. Sega really has lost their way. I almost don't want them to bother with OutRun 3 at this point. I can imagine them fucking that up even more!

Sorry for the massive bump but I finally got my impressions video of my time with the game at EAG International up.
Honestly none of us really felt the same as VVV about it though: we really enjoyed it. Felt very much like a modern reskin of the XBLA/PSN/Sega racing Classic version to us, though the steering was a little lighter perhaps? Oh and the up-down gear stick is no where near as nice as the H-shaped one on the original so manual gameplay took some getting used to. It defo doesn't deserve to be called Daytona 3, this is not a sequel by any means. Either way we all had a lot of fun with it though.

Posting this here as well.

Major update from the Amusement Expo 2017.

Daytona Championship USA

After the unveil of Daytona Championship USA at IAAPA 2016, we’ve had to wait a few months to see how the game has progressed. The IAAPA build was reportedly around the 50% completion mark while the version at Amusement Expo is 95% finished. As I mentioned on Twitter the other day, Sega has begun taking orders for the game and according to a rep that I spoke with at the show, interest has been high for this one. They sound rather pleased about the orders placed already so we’ll see how things go into the Summer.

As for the changes, we now have all six tracks to race, the final two being the remaster of Seaside Street Galaxy and the new addition, Metro City.

I almost flipped the fuck out with rage when I thought Metro City was the remaster of Seaside Street Galaxy. It's not. Thank fuck.

The graphics have received various refinements since November, the most noticeable of them being the lighting & shadows. There are now bloom effects that were not present before; the shadows look realistic and damaged cars have more detail. Here’s a comparison between the two builds although it is one of those things where certain details are more noticeable in person than on camera:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1iE895X6GI

Another concern has been the handling. As mentioned in November, I have not played the original Daytona in a very long time so I cannot comment on how Championship compares on that and force feedback. That said, there is a noticeable improvement in this area over what I played at IAAPA. I was hoping that the seat would have more feedback to it though – a subwoofer rumble or an ‘engine growl’ that I was told would be in the final. There is a scene in Dinosaur Canyon where some fighter jets fly over head – I remember that Rush 2049 did something like that but the whole seat rumbled when that happened. In this build of DCUSA, there’s a little rumble but it comes from the front speakers so it’s not the same effect.

The bad news to report (again) is that the game will ship with an Up-Down speed shifter. A rep did state that the H/4-speed shifter option will still be available as the software sees either component a 4-speed shifter with four recognized positions. As it is, you can still do 4-2-4 shifting for drifts but if you are used to the old way, it’s going to take some readjusting on your muscle memory. Since I don’t have that, double tapping worked fine for me.

The live marquee system has also been redesigned from what we saw at IAAPA. That prototype was somewhat static – now the billboard above each game features more animations and excitement. The completed game begins shipping soon and you should start finding it at select locations in April.

Lets hope it continues to improve and pray that the final version in the U.S. has a H/4-speed shifter.

Bring Daytona USA 2 Battle on the Edge and Daytona USA 2 Power Edition home to PS4 and Xbox One, ffs Sega.

This game is completely dead to me without the ability to H-gate/-4-speed shift. If they bring it out on home consoles without an option to gear shift with an H-Pattern shifter it will be completely dead on arrival. Seriously Sega, what fucking demon possessed you to make such a bone-headed decision? In what world do people drive stock cars with a sequential shifter? LOL unbelievable.

My guess would be how many units of Daytona had issues with busted H-Gates so they opted for the simpler and cheaper sequential shifter

The game looks great, at least is nailing the 90's style from the first 2 games

By the way, what does it means "blue sky" style for games? Always see it mentioned on daytona and sega discussions

Lots of games made by Sega from their Dreamcast days and earlier feature blue skies in their graphics, as well as bright colors and generally happy atmospheres. It's one of the things classic to the Sega asthetic that people like.

They even sing about them in Daytona USA
