Batman: Mask of the Phantasm coming to Blu-ray next month.

Fantastic news.

People asking for a blu ray release of the series: I doubt that will ever happen, this remaster is likely only possible because they are doing a new transfer from the 35mm theatrical print, since Mask of the Phantasm was shown in theatres. The TV series likely doesn't exist anywhere in anything but SD resolution.

The existence of that 35mm is why so many people have asked for a BR release, since we've known it would be possible. Let's hope the end result match the quality of the movie.

It can still happen, TAS would just need a remaster. When DBZ got a blu ray remaster they included an interesting documentary on the subject that explores the entire process.

Considering it is largely considered one of the greatest and most important cartoons of all time, and the fact that Batman is and always will be a huge selling brand, I think it'll happen someday.

Batman: The Animated Series has a 35mm negative.

It's a very good movie, but I really wish they'd been able to get TMS to work on it as originally planned. It's just not very well animated; it deserved better.

OMG!!! Just made my day. Day Fucking One.

Best Batman movie ever and one of my favorite movies of all time. Just recently bought a series of digital Batman Beyond comics because they have the Phantasm in them. Cannot wait.

OMG OMG OMG OMG OH MY FUCKING GOD THEY FINALLY DID IT!!!!!!

Sorry guys, but this is the one movie I've been waiting years for to finally get on blu ray! I'm so fucking happy right now!!!!!

Please have a UK release. Please please please.

Hope it eventually comes to Australia too, the dvd is only $7 in some retail stores here (which itself had a patchy release history.... came out, disappeared for years, then they brought it back).

Batman TAS and other WB animated series got released for the the first time in almost 10 years last year, from memory only the first two volumes of TAS came out on dvd (with other "best of" dvd sets), but now we have the complete TAS volumes, Justice League/JLU, Superman.

But TAS was shot on film (which they did up until the second series of Batman Beyond when they switched to digital methods), so it would be well suited for a BD (yes, it's abbreviated BD, by the way) release.

I wish they could put out a Blu collection with Phantasm, Subzero and the best-animated/looking TAS episodes. I would say...
On Leather Wings
Two-Face pt 1
Gray Ghost
Feat of Clay Pt 2
Clock King
Robin's Reckoning pt 1
Read My Lips
Avatar (eh, has some good color work)

It honestly isn't that big of a spoiler, its not really meant to be a big mystery who The Phantasm is.

It's like reading Batman: Hush and not immediately knowing who Hush is.
Gee, I wonder if this person Bruce Wayne knew long ago and was close to that I never knew of before this story is in any way connected to the new villain I have never heard of before this story.

Clock King is on your list. All is well.

Good list, but no "I am the Night?" That pretty much lays the thesis of the DCAU Batman at its heart.

Sorry, I should have better clarified that the list was episodes with visuals that would gain the most from HD.

Those are all good episodes, but I also love plenty of episodes that look pretty average (most Dong Yang episodes.) That said, most of the episodes with really bad visuals drag the episode down (most AKOM episodes.)

Gouty

Bloodborne is shit
Bummed they didn't create a 5.1 track, similar to what Disney has done with their animated oldies.

I'm going to be the voice of descent here and say this movie was not very good and it's all your fault

After hearing it hyped for years when I finally watched it I found it forgettable to say the least.

I blame all of you for hyping it up so much though, you have yourselves to blame.

I will give it another chance and watch it again on blu ray though since it's Batman.

come at me

My mistake. Again, I should double check these things for context...

How do you make a list like that and leave off Heart of Ice? All the ice effects, plus they spent a ton of time doing the frosting effect on Freeze's glass helmet (it also doesn't hurt that it's a damn good episode). Rest of the list is solid though, especially Feat of Clay with that amazingly animated last fight in the control room.

You can tell it's not a straight-up "Best of" list because there's no Joker episodes at all.

True, that's also good. Maybe I was just being petty, since it always gets attention (but deservedly so.) Let's see... Baby-Doll is another nice-looking Spectrum episode.

Since I happened to remember it: All four Volumes of Batman: The Animated Series and Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero are free for Amazon Prime members.

I came off as more critical than I intended to I think, sorry about that. I wasn't shitting on your list just... adding to it in the most annoying way possible?

Like I said, it's a solid list, and Feat of Clay pt.2 is definitely my go-to for great-looking episodes.

In terms of Spectrum episodes, I always feel like "P.O.V" gets overlooked; there's a lot of really great fire animation (usually the brighter foreground stuff but there's a bit with a falling crate that's really sharp) and shadows in there (plus, while not a visual element, Shirley Walker's musical variation depending on which character's telling the story is just so damn good). I seem to remember some of the character animation being a little stiff though.

No offense taken, it's all good. I should take another look at P.O.V., there's good stuff hidden all around the series.

Mask of the Phantasm also has the best Batman theme ever. RIP Shirley Walker, you gave this series, and us, so many iconic pieces of music and set the mood and tone for my favorite incarnation of Batman ever.

About this. I remember reading that there were a bunch of people who did a lot of work on the film that, for one reason or another, weren't allowed to be credited for their work in the credits. Shirley Walker thought that was bullshit, so that chanting in the theme? It's those contributors names backwards.
