When your name is “Tinashe,” black folks don’t need Scooby Doo or a member of the Mystery Machine to guess that race. Yet the singer-songwriter-dancer is arguing that the lot of us don’t completely embrace her, a mixed-race woman, even though she considers herself to be a black woman.

Tinashe is not wrong in noting that it has been much harder for black female artists to enjoy the sort of crossover success that they had in the 2000s, the 1990s or even the 1980s.

Something has shifted, and it is worth discussing. However, with respect to Tinashe’s problems, it would have behooved her to first look within before speaking publicly on the state of her career. Likewise, it might be in her best interests to keep other artists’ names out of her mouth. That is, if she isn’t going to bother telling the whole story rather than the parts that fit her narrative.

While some outlets did exaggerate the extent to which Tinashe faulted black people for her failures, it is her fault for bringing it up. Also, consider the optics: a mixed-race woman going to a white journalist to whine about how mean the “regular blacks” have been to her.

Although my favourite track is this one they teased back in 2015 (the opener of the album). The right amount of funky and experimental. Its 5 minutes make for a very interesting first listen.

But there is honestly not a single bad song in the album. It probably helps that it's only 6 songs long. I don't know why in this era of digital releases the west hasn't jumped on the mini album format, to keep things focused, instead of drag the whole experience to fit some quotas.

That's incredibly disappointing from her team. She was one of the biggest artists of the decade. She needs to hire someone to help her work on songs, with the best writing in the industry. Only 2 songs should be radio singles, focus the rest on making great songs that are powerful and revealing. Don't half ass your politics, speak the truth of how hopeful you were the final night of the DNC convention and the heartbreaking disappoint election night. Talk about your experience with this album and the rejection by the general public.
Just make it real and raw.


Also I would say the Melodrama is better than I thought. I recommend headphones personally. Still overrated though.
