Trevor Noah (The Daily Show) on the Philando Castile ruling and dash cam video

Trevor Noah of the Daily Show has been covering the Philando Castile ruling the past few days and I feel it truly deserves to be seen by everyone. Especially his latest bit that aired last night.

Link to video from last night (warming: it has the dash cam footage of the shooting): Link
His dissection of what has transpired really is depressing and it really highlights the struggles and challenges faced by people of color in the United States. Watching the raw footage was already infuriating, and then taking in the whole picture with context of racism, and the expectations of citizens versus the police really begins to mess with your head.

One other video that deserves attention is this one, also by Trevor Noah: Link
This video was released before the release of the dash cam footage. His analysis of the ruling is completely on-point.

Please don't shoot me if old.

Saw this on FB and was really struck at his candidness. Very well said, and definitely gonna show this off to people who don't believe there is institutional racism in the police force.

Just saw. I can't say anything but total agreement. This is the system working as it should. I'm at a loss of what to say to African Americans.

How can people watch this and think there's nothing wrong??

Fuck.

I had avoided watching the dashcam footage because like Noah, I already felt so much about this case but during this, I watched for the context and just...

I don't have anything to say. I got nothing.

I really don't understand the fucking jury here.

Cop asked for license and registration. Philando did the right thing and said I do have a firearm. Cop says ok. Proceeds to pull out license and registration. Don't pull it out.

I'm not pulling it out.... 7 fucking shots.

If that isn't negligent manslaughter I don't know what is.

Jesus.

Did the fucking prosecutor even say what I just said? It's just sad.

Some really fucked up shit.

I'm from a european country with a reasonably well trained police force and I'm white so I've never felt unsafe whenever I'm around a cop.
But after watching this I'm sure I wouldn't want to be around a cop over there either. No one that eager to shoot another person should be allowed to carry a gun.

The most telling part I think is how the woman sitting next to the guy that just got guned down was more calm and level headed than that cop.
What the fuck kind of training do they even get over there? No excuse for the obvious racism either.

This was my first time seeing the newly released video, and it's pretty fucking appalling. What kind of training are these cops receiving where they're that afraid of black people.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
I saw the dashcam video. It went from 0 to 11 in a matter of seconds. The driver clearly tells the officer he has a firearm. Was the driver reaching for his wallet or something that caused the officer to freak out as much as he did all of a sudden ?

Extremely tragic event through out.

Well he's black and was smoking marijuana so he deserves his fate in their eyes

“I thought, I was gonna die,” Yanez later recounted about the moments leading up to the shooting, “and I thought if he’s, if he has the, the guts and the audacity to smoke marijuana in front of the five year old girl and risk her lungs and risk her life by giving her secondhand smoke and the front seat passenger doing the same thing then what, what care does he give about me. And, I let off the rounds and then after the rounds were off, the little girls [sic] was screaming.”

Just fucked up on every level.

Good breakdown by Trevor. Hopefully it will reach some people.

He was reaching for his id.. which the cop told him to do.

The cop shouldn't be a cop. He saw a black man and got scared automatically. That put him on edge from the jump. There wasn't any actual threat it his cowardice and racism got the best of him. That's not an excuse and he should be in jail. But jury's don't care

when these comedians go to social justice advocacy(atleast on the face of it), that's really where they shine. I wish they could be so smart on all issues

Wtf is up with the cop using marijuana as an excuse to kill someone. This cop shows he cannot handle the job and that he clearly misinterprets situations. Should be fired if he isn't going to jail as he has shown he is a danger to society while wearing the badge.

There was this experiment done, I can't remember what it was called, where they had both white and black police run these simulations. And they had to both white and black people with either a gun or a cell phone in their hand then had either/or popup in different poses and the police had to either shoot or not by attempting to recognize what was in the hand. Well both white and black police shot at the black guy pop up at the same rate showing that even black people view black people as more dangerous.

This will not changed until we stop predisposing ourselves to all things black being bad. In almost every show or movie the black guy is usually the bad guy, on the news they only seem to show black people doing bad things, and we never seem to see black people doing goods things in the media or the content we consume. So from birth we have brainwashed an entire population on a particular race being dangerous. This is why we see people become less racist when they move to cities or other very diverse areas because they are actually witnessing the good in all people instead of being force fed all the bad people do. We have a long way to go to remedy this.

I immediately think of that little girl and the trauma she had to endure and now has to live with for the rest of her life.

Fucking disgraceful. What kind of fuckin human beings would stand next to this loser piece of shit and call him brother and offer him protection. Fuck everyone around this piece of garbage pile of shit.

She'll never not be afraid of cops/authority either. Whole generations of kids still scared of racist fuckin cops in fuckin 2020 and forward. Despicable.

This guy fired a gun one-handed, seven times into a vehicle with 3 innocent people including a child.

That he got off free is basically our nation encapsulated into a single tragic event. This country does not value the lives of minorities and we will continue to build ourselves up on their corpses like we've done since the birth of this nation.

Because there are a lot of old people who still believe in reefer madness and think weed is the worst thing in the world that those black folk love to smoke and it gives them super strength etc . So they can justify it in their minds that people get killed over it

That story about him getting stopped by the cops about 8-10 times in as little as six years is pretty mind blowing and sad as well. My dad has had his drivers liscense for over 30 years and he's been driving all over the contenent for the past 10 years due to his job and he hasn't been stopped even once.

I really hope America gets its shit together because there are no excuses.

It's more common than you think. If you're black you basically need to be prepared to get stopped by the cops multiple times per month for whatever shitty reason they want to come up with. And every single one of those stops could mean your brutal death by police.

Imagine having to live like that.

My heart stopped while watching the episode last night. I knew institutional racism was a thing, but a lot of the time I would just skip to the next news story (gun violence is sadly a normal thing in this country). I didn't even realize there was a kid in the car until a minute later.

IDK if he was reaching for something, but he clearly followed all of the rules verbally. Hell by the his tone of voice, he (& his girlfriend) sounded more emotionally in control than the cop did. Where's the NRA when you need them?

The world we live in is fucked beyond belief. Watching that video was a reminder of that. I hope at some point in my life I see things improve.

It's really fucking me up that this story has every hallmark of the type of thing guns rights activists are normally all over in a heartbeat, yet one variable keeps them silent on it.

They know it. They know it's more lucrative to simply ignore this case than it would be to at least do a half-assed virtue signaling attempt at fighting on Philando's behalf.

It isn't surprising so much as it's definitive. They can't even do the token performative routine to pretend that they actually want equal gun rights for all. It really is all about demonizing people based on race.

One of the louder silences in recent memory.

The NRA is a white supremacist organization. It's not even hyperbole at this point.

That is absolutely fucking insane.

Like it doesn't make ANY fucking sense

And the consequences are horrificly nightmarish

Human beings are the worst fucking animal to ever exist

After the verdict I kept a radio silence on this, happened right around when my daughter was born. Having see these now, while holding my daughter I'm fucking angrier than before. That mans daughter will grow up knowing her father died for just being himself, and that she is in full risk of the same thing. Before my daughter was born I struggled with the thought in my mind that I hoped she looks more like her mother than she does me. I've been stopped numerous times, had my car checked front and back(I didn't know better that I shouldn't have let them do it but really I wouldn't risk arguing my rights with them either at this point). My daughter likely won't have to deal with any of this as we don't share the same skin color. It fucks with me theres a part of me that's grateful for that.

There's a great Twitter thread about how for some people (a lot of people) the fact that he was stopped 10 times in the last six years isn't evidence of discrimination or bias but further evidence that he was 'dangerous"

I can't because it's so completely outside of my experience. I can definitely emphasize though.
Like I've said in my other post I've never felt afraid around a cop because they're not like that over here at all. They're extremely polite, friendly and always willing to help (it's their job after all) and only use force when absolutely necessary and even then with restraint. It's not perfect and there have been some incidents here and there, but never anything of this magnitude and certainly not as often as it happens in America.
'Worst' experience I've ever had with one was recieving a stern look from one because I was riding my bike through the mall when I was 12.

I'm looking at this from a distance of course, but my impression is that stuff like this is almost becoming the norm over there. "Oh, just another police shooting".

Here is how I see it. Jury sees cops killing people all over the country with no consequences. Fear for their own life if they rule against him. Of course they could all be just as racist as the cops.

Like, they think police officers are going to hunt them down if they return a guilty verdict? It's not simple enough to chalk it up to systemic racism making people think it's OK to fear for your life just because someone is black? We have to invent silly fears as possible motivations now?

Incredibly sad and infuriating. What can you say at this point?

I'm honestly surprised more incidents like the Dallas shooting don't take place. This kind of gross, pervasive injustice drives people crazy.

Not everything is simple. Systemic/Institutional racism obviously exists. The second half of my post clearly said that it could have been because they were racists. That wasn't sarcasm in case you thought it was.

After the verdict, after watching the dash cam video, and watching Trevor Noah on this event. I just have this anger, knowing that my life means shit to the police, to the government, and to a portion of white people. That man was murder for doing nothing, in front of his daughter and partner. I know his daughter will remember her father's death for rest of her life.

It's sad that a cop can't be convicted in this country if all he needs to say is that he feared for his life. Since almost all of these situations aren't premeditated, it's impossible to prove otherwise.

I understand what your post said. I was referencing the first half, which says: "Here is how I see it. Jury sees cops killing people all over the country with no consequences. Fear for their own life if they rule against him."

We really trying to invent fictional fears to give these folks an easy out? I guess it is easy to say "Welp, you know what, they were just afraid the cops would hunt them down after, nothing more to see here, just a bunch of citizens scared for their lives."

Well its been the norm for a few hundred years.

I'm not trying to give an easy way out to anyone. Even if they did fear for their lives they should have made the right decision. I'm just saying its possible something like this could sway a juror or 2. Even still, I don't think its as powerful a force as systemic racism at all.

Can anyone with more knowledge than me tell me if there has been any police officer convicted in these cases?

It really feels like they have a license to kill. What are the consequences? As far as I can tell, there are none. Hell, the officer from Tulsa apparently had a party thrown for her. "Hey! Great job on killing that black man!" What the fuck.

After watching the dash cam footage and listening to Trevor Noah, my blood is boiling but I'm weighed down by an immense sadness. This is such fucking bullshit.

Most of the jury was white, they had nothing to fear if they ruled against him.
