Valkyria Revolution review thread

5/10 is generous for this game tbh. I don't know why it exists.
Considering most critics only/mostly use 4-10 on a scale of 1-10, 5/10 is pretty bad. A game has to be utterly broken and barely functional to get anything below a 4, usually, like the kind of Steam/PC games Jim Sterling likes to shit on/make Youtube videos about ripping them apart.

This was known to be a bad game after the Japanese version was released in January, why did Sega still bother to finish the localization and release it? It will totally bomb.

Man what the fuck, I actually considered checking this out since I usually prefer action RPGs, but aside from the reviews I checked out an impressions video on YT. Who the fuck thought a canned 3-hit attack animation for one button press would be a good idea for an "action" game?

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Not every IP has to become a catchall brand and Valkyria didn't need this. If they wanted to shift directions and make it different that would've been one thing, but taking away all elements of strategy to make a brain dead action game? WTF Sega? The very idea of this game was horrible to begin with.

Some are going to disagree because it's not a "Chronicles" game and blame the setbacks of this game on those who don't agree. But I still haven't heard any real compelling reason why this tried to use the Valkyria name to begin with. Was Shining just too whored out?

I think this could have become something 'good' under the right conditions, but Sega majorly fucked this game over from what I heard (tell me if I've got something wrong).
They wanted a demo of the game out while it was basically pre-alpha, the demo was received terribly and as a result Sega slashed the budget hard which shows in the graphics and cutscenes and basically sent it out to die.

On the one hand, maybe the game would have never become good and the demo made them cut their losses, but it could also have become something better with the original budget, we'll never know.
But then again, the entire premise of this game was probably misguided to begin with, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Heh, Shining's never too whored out for some producers at SEGA of Japan. They'll never own up to fucking over Camelot when they finished Shining Force III in desperate conditions, and they'll gladly make guaranteed otaku money with Shining spin-offs that might as well be different IPs in all but name. Meanwhile the Yakuza team continues to make good decisions for their franchise, or at least not bad ones.

As for this game, it's a real waste. I hope Media.Vision made got dosh from whatever contract they signed with SEGA, and hopefully they can get better work (like a new proper Wild Arms or a new IP which isn't subservient to yesterday's idea of media mix).

You joke but even though I reviewed it and it absolutely isn't worth buying, I'm buying it on Xbox because it existing is hilarious and some people get super salty about t being on Xbox one.

I mean, the joke is ultimately on you if you're spending money on a game you believe isn't worth buying.

I'm truly gutted, the first Valkyria game on Xbox and it's a poor one. Still holding out for a chronicles release but it looks even more unlikely now.

Jeez why is Sega ruining this IP? They created something amazing initially then went on to sabotage it in so many different ways.

I'm almost certainly gonna skip this, but I'm here for a Mitsuda soundtrack.

While i had 0 interest in an ARPG, it's a bit sad that SEGA went to the trouble of greenlighting this only to send it out to die in this fashion.

What's the point of even spending the money to make this game? And doing it with a brand name that still had positive word of mouth.

It's made worse by the fact that Valkyria Chronicles was originally destined for Xbox 360 but never made it out on that format after its platform switch.

Why Sega greenlit this as the first game on Xbox and not VC Remastered boggles the mind.

Yeah, the game is just garbage...worse than Star ocean 5 by far

Japan =/= Xbox is why

It was PS4 / PSVita only in Japan. I'm surprised that they decided to put some extra cash porting it to the Xbox One.

Japan != entire addressable console market.

The fact that Valkyria Revolution exists on Xbox One at all is evidence of this. Hence, why start with this flawed game and not Valkyria Chronicles Remastered.

Because the latter would probably stand more of a chance of recouping any costs involved in porting the game.

I'm not referring to Japanese users. I'm saying, japan developers, and japanese games and xbox don't go together at all. western Xbox gamers don't care about Japanese games period. And most times have to defend their existence on the platform. I don't even know why they bothered with this game honestly, as i can tell you it will bomb on every platform, but especially Xbox One.

But it has nothing to do with asking why Sega went for this instead of Valkyria Chronicles Remastered. You just admitted yourself that this game isn't going to shift many copies, particularly so on Xbox One.

your response only really makes sense if I was to ask why Sega didn't bother with *any* Valkyria game on Xbox One. Which was not the case. They've literally just produced an Xbox One version of the game, and I'm wondering why they went for this anyway.

Whether active Xbox One aren't interested in these sorts of games is another matter entirely.

All they had to do was make a VC game like VC1 and VC3 and it would have mad sales on PS4 and PC. It feels like they used the valkryia name for this instead of a new ip because they knew it would flop without it, and it looks like it still will. Like seriously, this has to be one of the most mismanaged game IPs ever especially with that psp fiasco

I think the Xbox initiative came from Deep Silver, aka Sega Europes distribution partner.
Oops I'm dumb
Edit: nevermind, still count as sequel
No this is absolutely not a sequel in any way o_O
It's a spin-off at best.

Gives all the fucks
Well, this might explain why Sega never brought over that demo that Japan got....

Kind of glad I held off, maybe I might give in at $20 if it has the pin + CD. I already heard rather "bleh" import impressions, looks like the negative response continues.

I guess, though Xbox One isn't doing so well in most European markets. It just seems weird to me really. I'm happy that the game got ported to another platform regardless, though it is odd that Sega didn't even consider a Nintendo Switch version either.

Cause they werent going to bother porting Valkyria Chronicles remastered again in a delayed launch just for Xbox One, and instead just went for the game they were currently working on.

In Japan, they are only making the game for Japan, so PS4. They would have had to have an xbox one version planned from the start, and there was no point to that for that region.

As said, Deep silver did the port to XB1, Japan didn't really have anything to do with it

Whether active Xbox One aren't interested in these sorts of games is another matter entirely. But I'd be hesitant to put them all in a "Japanese games" box. I mean, would you put Ubisoft games in a "French games" box and say Xbox One owners aren't interested in French games if something like Rayman Legends and Child of Light flopped on One?

The difference is, you can't really tell most of these AAA european or candian games from anything made in America, for various reasons.

Japanese games are different and cant hide their origins so easily.

I mean, unless we're talking about DBZ/Naruto games and dark souls, or FF15..i'd hesitate to see the point.

I didn't say I understood the reasoning :p

The time gap between Japanese and overseas releases for Valkyria Chronicles Remastered and Valkyria Revolution is 4-6 months. Valkyria Chronicles Remastered was released internationally.

That wasn't fact, but a suggestion as to what might have happened. And it would have been Media.Vision who programmed the port.

that may be so, but deep silver likely commissioned it. You asked in the first place why this game and why not remastered. Well its likely Deep silver is the reason this game is on Xbox one at all

I don't buy into the narrative that active Xbox One users buy games based on their origin. It's clearly more complicated than that.

As I mentioned earlier, it's actually rather unlikely that this is the case, considering Deep Silver (actually Koch Media) is only the European distributor of the game (it's being published by Sega, unlike Atlus titles) and non-UK markets aren't big in Europe for Xbox One.

Having thought about it I suppose a more likely reason is this port is what came out of talks between Xbox and publisher exec bids for more support from Japanese publishers who tend to leave out the Xbox One in multiplatform plans.
