Is this name too similar to Bin Laden?

I feel like kids born today won't really know who Bin Laden is, and by the time he is an adult no one will care.

Is this a meme? Because this is a really laughable thing to think. What the hell kind of school would these kids be going to where they're not taught about 9/11?

[a bunch of kids at recess deciding what to play]

Jimmy Jones: Ok, we'll be Seal Team Six and you're the terrorist Bin Laden.

Ben Lada: Cool!

I mean, people don't know about the Oklahoma City bombing, or the Atlanta Olympic bombing, or the bombing of the World Trade Center.
People are ignorant.

Wait.

A plane hit the WTC before 9/11? I had heard about the other events you mentioned. I even know about the bomb that went off at the WTC in the 90s. But a plane flying into those buildings was not unprecedented in 2001?

Brb, googling

Maybe dude meant the Empire State Building? I believe a small plane smashed into it waaaaay back when.

This is certainly not feasible (and would be strange IMO, since she took my last name).

Why would it not be feasible? Genuinely curious, not getting what the issue is.

Also, it's still early days if he's your first child... why not take her last name as well if consistency is a problem?

I mean its technically feasible, but not something I'd/we'd like to do.

Again, just curious, but why is she agaisnt it? Is this one of those public perception things?
I know Poland isn't exactly the most socially progressive country out there but such patriarchal traditions really have no logic to them, it's just indoctrinated bigotry, there really should be no room for that kind of behaviour still being adhered to out of some misguided sense of pride.

Or is her name just straight up fugliness incarnate?

Yeah I can see it and you could too. Some kid in middle school or high school might make that connection too. Not worth it imo

No, nothing like that. a) I wouldn't want to go through the hassle of us both changing our names and b) I like our last name enough that I'd like to keep it (I certainly like it more than I like Ben).

it's a really silly question, but now that you thought of it, it will never go away, so choose a different name

That is a name that would get both your kid and his parents on some crazy persons list. I cannot imagine why anyone would do this to a kid, or condemn themselves to a lifetime of explaining to people how he got that name.

Fair enough! I'd still go with Benjamin if you like it, just call him Benji instead of Ben.

Edit : also just realized you meant Polish heritage, not nationality... -.-' I'm an idiot.

Know what is a good name that won't sound like a terrorist to a crazy person?

Plus you can get a free N64 out of it.

A lifetime of explaining how his parents named him Benjamin

Think you're fine. Plus when your kid is old enough for people to make fun of him for that, it'll be a solid 15+ years after Bin Laden has been killed.

Truth is though, you should never post your kid's name on gaf. When he googles his name in 15 years, this thread will show up. It's why I think Gaf admins should do a str replace for Kale Breckin and replace it with "John Smith," because in 15 years that kid is going to search his name and find the thread(s) about his naming, and then his parents having ... problems.

Not that they won't be taught about Al Qaeda or that Bin Laden was the worlds most infamous terrorist for a decade, but I think it's right. It's unlikely that most kids born in 2005 really known who Ted Kacynski was, or Timothy McVeigh, etc. Not that they're as infamous as Bin Laden, but eventually he won't be as culturally significant as he is for people who lived through 9/11, or people who lived through Oklahoma City, etc. Likewise, for kids born in 2018, Osama Bin Laden just won't be as relevant to them as someone who lived through 9/11... Almost 20 years before their birth.

I liked the Enchi suggestion lol.

Anyway, yes, it sounds awfully similar. If you need to ask this question, I'd say you already know the answer.

Lucas Lada sounds nice. Peter Lada too. Matthew Lada.

I feel that Lada cars could be more famous than Bin Ladin in 10 years. If they export small Lada cars to the US, it has the potential to the next Yugo.

So the moral of the story, change your surname to "America".

... Are people really saying kids from 10-15 years from now won't make the reference? It's kind of insulting that people think that little of kids and teenagers nowadays.

Also OP, if you have to make a thread about it, maybe you should reconsider. I mean it's your choice at the end of the day, and the kid can always change their name officially, but seriously. If you're having doubts now...

Best wishes.

People will likely make dumb jokes about the name sounding somewhat similar, but that shouldn't deter you from naming your child what you want.

Damn, this line of thinking is pretty selfish. If my parents knowingly gave me a name that made me an easy target for bullying then first chance I got I'd change my full name just to spite them.

I don't think it'll be strong enough to be immediately evocative where you hear the OP's kid's name and then some kid born 20 years after 9/11 is going to immediately think of the terrorist. Bin Laden just won't be relevant to them like he is to most of us.

A friend of mine's last name is Ararat, and I passingly think of the terrorist Yasser Arafat when I hear his name. But even for someone who was alive when Arafat was famous/infamous, it's not something that a kid born anytime after 2005 really thinks about. Bin Laden's name will be historically trivial, not immediately evocative like it is for most of us.

I'm not trying to say Ben Laden is a great historical man, but I cant believe people are saying he is some forgettable person in history. 911 happen in 2001 and we still have troops in Afghanistan and Iraq here in 2017 due to this man. People in America will def know who he is even years from now, maybe elementary kids might not know a lot but def high school kids will know at that age and they are some of the biggest jerks out there.

I have a secret. My first name is a secret among my friends. And I kept it from my fiancee on our first year dating...

Eh, kids will probably have fun with the name, but kids make fun of everything.

Still not as bad as a kid who went to my high school named Harry Knipple.

Bin Laden will have been dead for like 17 years when your kid is 10, which is the age kids might start making fun of his name...So I think you're safe. Sure they'll learn about 9/11 probably, but I doubt it will be a big deal.

Well you have to tell us what it is now that you brought it up!

I can't imagine why you think the person that orchestrated the biggest attack in US history which killed 3,000 people wouldn't be a big deal.

Are you going to build a time machine and go back in time to kill him and erase him from the history books? Because that's the only way. Cool if you are going to do that.
