Playerunknown's Battlegrounds studio wants to add cross-play between PC and Xbox One

MUnited83

For you.
From VG247's interview with the executive producer of Battlegrounds

With console development now underway, do you see a future where cross-platform play is on the table for Battlegrounds?

Cross network play between the PC and the console is definitely something we want to do down the road, and we don’t anticipate we’ll have any technical issues with that.

But… when you consider the competitive side of the game, I do feel that there’s a balance issue between controllers and keyboard and mouse. That’s what’s making it difficult for us to do right away. If we’re going to allow players to use controllers we need to have the aim assist added in and things like that. We’re not going to be supporting it right away, but it’s something we’d like to look into later.

Mine is pretty and pink
Please don't. I love cross play between different platforms but m/kb vs controller is not good. I don't want to fight against people running around with auto-aim shotguns.

This would be very interesting to see! Unfortunately the battlegrounds may be pretty unbalanced with controller players going up against keyboard and mouse players.

I think for 75% of the experience this would be balanced and fine, but when you factor in the fine-detail of long-distance scoping (which I'd say is at least 25% of kill likelihood) the XBO players are definitely going to have the short straw.

Lose lose situation. Console players will complain that K/M are too much an advantage, PC players will complain about insane controller aim assist.

Good luck !

That seems like a bad idea.

Rocket League makes sense. Most PC players are using controllers anyways.

A shooter doesn't make sense though.

Even though other factors like connection speed play a bigger role in advantages at times it still feels like shooters shouldn't have CP although PUBG seems to be fairly slow for the most part compared to something like Lawbreakers, COD.
Just implement a toggle for it, and implement kb/m support on the Xbox version.
It will always have a toggle anyway because of that is part of MS's requirements for crossplay.

Implementing keyboard support doesn't seem like it will help solve that because the majority wouldn't know/use it.

I wish MS next gen controller could have some sort of ID chip in it which authenticates itself with the server every few seconds. So PC players who play with a controller can be instantly thrown in the Xbox player pool. There must be some tech available which is difficult to spoof.

This is going to leave someone unhappy.

Short range: Console players in advantage because auto-aim.

Long range: PC players in advantage because mouse precision.

Have default for crossplay disabled so only people that understand it will go and turn it on. The best decision though is for Phil to make keyboard and mouse support happen.

The latter is would be a really silly complaint since any thing short of full on Auto Aim means m+kb players have the clear advantage in terms of precision and reaction time.

Really not a good idea to have crossplay in a competitive game like this. Mouse gives a massive advantage. I know because I actually tried to play it with a controller a couple times.

If they make the crossplay servers seperate like they do with FPS and zombie mode servers, then It should be fine, but I don't see why any console player would play in those servers.

Atleast this might mean they'll finally fix those controller glitches on PC.

Sony am cry

Only if Switch is added, since Sony is okay with PS4 + PC crossplay and already do it with a bunch of games.

I'm all for cross-play where it makes sense, but I'm not sure PC and Xbox cross-play does

As long as you can opt in and out maybe it'll be fine. If they bring full controller support to the PC and just have a controller only server I would be onboard with that too. But having aim assisted controller players against m+kb players seems like the worst solution

I'm sure they are mindful enough to have separate modes for controller only or controller + kb/m.

This is good news.
Why would anybody using a controller want to play against people using keyboard and mouse. Why would anybody with access to a keyboard and mouse want to play with a controller.

What a terrible idea.

Looking forward to the console version so you're not playing against people who have nerfed the graphics options just to give themselves an advantage.

I guess it's fine as long as you can choose to just play against other console players if you prefer.

I agree. Auto-aim is a huge advantage for gamepad players.

I suppose it goes both ways, the speed and precision the mouse grants players is arguably unrivaled, auto-aim is sure to aid controller players though, especially with shotguns.

Perhaps Playerunknown's Battlegrounds could be a testing ground for mouse and keyboard support on the Xbox One? It would be cool to see a testing phase like Gears of War 4 had.

Game has ELO, doesn't matter what control scheme you're using you'll be matched vs. players performing within a given range.

If I just want to play as quickly as possible and don't really care about winning a bigger pool of players is always better. Although I'm sure MS will push this game to no end so Xbox players will be there anyway. (If PUBG remains as popular as it is today.)

And some people just prefer controllers over kb/m? Why is this still a conversation in 2017?

Gears 4 had crossplay right? How'd that turn out? I thought I heard about kb/m vs controller community events or was that a different game?

Having played quite a bit of PUBG. This sounds like a really bad idea.

This is not a normal console shooter. Console players will either get destroyed, or they will have to rebalance the whole game to cater to them.

Aiming in PUBG is generally slow due to pixel sized targets as it requires precision rather than speed, mouse has an advantage when it comes to both precision and speed. But if controllers have aim assist (not just talking about auto aim, but there are several kind of aim assists) then it will change things up. Which is why I wouldn't be so sure to write it off as controller players getting destroyed. It's not an arena shooter or even a shooter that requires twitch aim.

Gears is a different kind of game that has playstyle that can favour controllers over KB/M. KB/M players have a clear advantage in long range weapons but controller players can do better in close range due to the way movement works in that game.

Are we sure about that? This is what I found and it's a bit confusing.

A recent article from UK publication Daily Express has been making the rounds claiming that the game will remain an exclusive for the Xbox One. This is the quote in full:

"We also found out that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is NOT coming to PS4 but will instead remain an Xbox One exclusive."

However, we reached out to Bluehole Studios and received a statement from the developer's spokesperson that refutes that claim:

"We're excited to announce that PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS is coming to Xbox One. We're always looking at various platforms to potentially introduce our game, but have nothing further to announce at this time."

Obviously, this is not an ironclad declaration that the game will come to other platforms, but it is a refutation of the Daily Express's statement that the game will remain an Xbox One exclusive.

For more on Player Unknown Battlegrounds, check out our in-depth interview with the developer.

I sure want a PS4 version. All my friends are on there.

How will aim assist even work on consoles? Magnetic bullets? From what I've seen from the game, it's heavily based on Arma engine and it's realistic shooting mechanism (bullet drop).

For me this is clearly a case where I can happily live without cross-play, or to be more precise: I plan to jump in on PC and I don't want the game changed for console players.
