Snake Pass, and how a bad home menu icon drags down my enjoyment of a game

I am baffled by both the existence and length of this thread. But I suppose 40% of the posts inside are saying the same thing, thus contributing to said length, and continuing the giant snake circle of life.

This is a silly thread...but I totally agree OP. I had the same reaction when I saw the icon for the first time.

Yep, got it last week on sale and seeing it next to Zelda and Mario Kart made me groan a bit. Not sure why they would change it from the original.

Actually I don't know how this got approved by Nintendo. Their Switch icon guidelines explicitly mention every icon must include the game logo.

Edit: not a requirement, but a recommendation according to Nintendo

No kidding. Lmao.

Which game has the most distracting and ugly icon? Snake Pass. AUGH.

Eh, that Cat anime one cause me to cringe a whole lot more than the goofy snake. Still I love snake pass on PC and might buy it again when I finally get a switch.

Nope, but it was on the leaked docs.

Also, now that I read it again, it's not required, but heavily recommended.
Wow, thanks for sharing this. So the new Snake Pass icon is straight-up out of step with Nintendo's own recommended guidelines.

All the more reason to revert back to the old icon.

I was gonna say this is a really silly complaint but then I remembered what I'm like with game boxart & book covers.

It kinda sucks if a game/book has an ugly cover but it wont bother me too much - however if I know there is/was another cover that was much nicer looking then having the ugly one would definitely annoy me. I'll sometimes go out of my way or pay a bit more to get certain covers

Saying that I don't really think the newer icon is much worse than the first but I get you OP

Exactly. At first I thought the OP was losing his mind but then I was reminded of certain games that have whack covers or boxes that make my shelf look uncool.

The icon doesn't look that diferent from the old one you're going to look at it about 30 seconds tops in your entire lifetime.

In fact, by making this thread you've actually made sure you'll see the icon about 100 times more that you would have otherwise.

But you see the icon every time you visit the home menu of your Switch. That's probably thousands of times in the lifetime of the system.

I see the Snake Pass icon every time I turn on the Switch, when playing any game — Zelda, Mario Kart, ARMS, Thumper, Puyo Puyo, Shovel Knight, etc.

I also see the Snake Pass icon every time I access the home menu while playing, which is like 20 times per play session, between taking screenshots and then checking them in the gallery, and also checking my friends list to see what people are playing as they come and go.

I also see it every time I access the home menu to check battery charges, change controllers for multiplayer, or heck, even to check the time.

Trust me: It adds up.

Also: It doesn't need to be this way. The old icon was fine. They didn't need to change it.

Has someone mentioned that it looks like an iPhone/Android app icon? Because it does, and it does kind of cheapen it. It doesn't look like a full game anymore and now it looks like a free-to-start microtransaction game.

The white border and drop shadow definitely make it look like that. It's terrible.

I could understand if cover/icon art turned you off from noticing or picking up a game off the shelf but even that isn't likely in this day and age where you can research a game.

I really can't relate to not liking a game that you previously liked because the icon doesn't agree with you. But to each his own. If it bothers you, it bothers you.

They changed the icon in a patch. The icon is different now than it was when I bought it.

The old icon was fine and looked nice. I'd really like to have it back, seeing how I'm always popping in and out of the home menu.

People can call Neiteio crazy all they want, but I've kind of noticed the same effect in myself. Whenever I look at the menu and try to decide what to play next, Snake Pass is never my choice because that stupid looking icon repels me.

I love the game when I do play it, but I have to force myself everytime. And I don't think it's that weird either, it's just how the mind works, I'm pretty sure many of you make similar choices without even realizing all the time.

Also, hell yes, I vote Gonner for the GOAT menu icon too. Great game as well.

The new icon isn't in the shop though???

Hah, you're right. I think since they both use the same render of Noodle, I assumed it was the same thing I saw on the store once I downloaded it.

Eh, I guess I can understand. When Final Fantasy Brave Exvius' icon changed into a picture of Ariana Grande for a month, I let out an exasperated sigh every time I launched it.

This is the most hilarious thing I've seen in a while. I love Square Enix.

How can I jam to that glorious stage select theme knowing that the Switch Snake owners are living with a struggle menu icon?

Designers intentionally design icons to both stand out and tempt you to click them — it seems weird to me that people would be that shocked when a poorly-executed design has the opposite effect on some users. The issue here is that it stands out too much to the point of being visually obnoxious. It's impossible to ignore how much it stands out, and I find myself unintentionally focused on it every time I open my Switch. It's a negative user experience.

(Besides, if we can't discuss the trivial minutae of video games on gaf, where can we?)

Is this supposed to be a Trump Noodle? Fake hair, orange skin, angry face, and hands so small I can't see 'em.
I think it's meant to be Clash of Clans

I don't understand why an icon would ruin anyone's enjoyment of anything other than the enjoyment of looking at an icon

I would be super upset if I paid for this game and had to look at that icon everytime I booted up the system. It looks like an icon for a F2P iPhone game meant to attract kids, except due to it being on the Switch it is stretched to be HUGE.

What a terrible decision.

I'll try to help you empathize.

Picture, if you would, a really obnoxious picture. I won't pretend to know what that might be for you. For me and many others, it's the icon in question, jarringly mismatched since it doesn't follow Nintendo's recommended format and sticks out like a sore thumb.

At any rate, imagine a really obnoxious picture.

Now, imagine that you see this picture in the middle of your home menu every time you boot up the Switch to play Snake Pass. Or Zelda. Or Mario Kart. Or ARMS. Or Thumper. Or Puyo Puyo Tetris. Or Shovel Knight. Or Snipperclips.

Imagine that you see it every time you hit the home button to check a screenshot you just took. In my case, I do this dozens of times every play session.

Imagine that you see a really obnoxious picture (whatever it may be) every time you go to check the home menu's clock, or the battery on the system, or the battery on your controllers, or to change the controllers you're using.

In the course of one play session, you may have seen this really obnoxious picture dozens of times. Always there, sticking out like a sore thumb.

Now picture also, if you would, that once upon a time, the picture in question was different. In fact, it used to be good, and you liked it, and everyone else liked it! But then one day, it became the really obnoxious picture.

And now you see it on every bootup, every shutdown, every time you check a screenshot, the time, the battery, the controllers.

It adds up. So, all told, a minor thing becomes major. Again, consider the above, but imagine a picture you find obnoxious.

And again, keep in mind they changed the icon, for no reason, after we bought it.

It'd be nice to have the old icon back.

I've got to agree. Obviously it's not a big issue but that icon is really bad. Should be mandatory for them to include the name of the game on it.

It makes me wonder if a mobile/tablet version is in the works and they are using the mobile app icon for all versions of the game.

It's not a big deal but it does look very out of place.

I'd honestly disagree. When looking through your library thinking of what to play for a bit, a bad icon can make me less likely to play because it just doesn't spark "fun" from a glance. Mario Kart looks like fun at a glance of the icon, Zelda looks like an adventure from the icon, etc. Snake Pass just looks.... like a bad image that tells me nothing other than "It has a goofy snake."
I can understand this if you never heard of or seen the game before. But it just makes no rational sense that it could do that if you already played the game, especially if you like it.

For the record, I prefer icons that ate something different than the box art or a cropping of it. I think the original looks lile a cheap copy paste of the box art. The new one has a bit of personality and they added a shadow to the snake. If anything, the they used resources to make the new one.

this is

my issue isn't a lack of empathy, it's just that this is *such* a non issue that even this level of reply is weird. calling an icon obnoxious because you don't like the design is super weird. it's an icon. if it's enough for you to have ruined your enjoyment of a game then delete it.

if an icon was offensive or misleading i would understand someone being upset, but getting this worked up because it ruins an aesthetic?

I can understand this if you never heard of or seen the game before. But it just makes no rational sense that it could do that if you already played the game, especially if you like it.

Yeah, exactly. this affecting your purchase of a game is one thing, but it driving you away from a game you were already interested enough in to buy?
