Neogaf Rock/Indie/Alt Music Thread (RockGAF?)

I go on the indieheads reddit. Their taste is questionable but they're pretty good on reporting new releases.

Funny you should say this, so do I, but get so sucked into Reddit whenever I am on it that I just started looking to see what Gaf has for new music discussion. Probably just need to stay off /r/all so all time is not lost.

To keep up with releases I usually just browse this thread and a Dutch messageboard that consists of pretty much only people with similar taste to mine. And well every friday I just check on Tidal what's newly released.

How do most of you keep track of new releases and are there any review sites you frequent?

I sub to loads of music YouTube channels and follow numerous artists, labels etc. of music I like, so I usually know if a release is coming out that I might be interested in.

Its easy to keep up with the releases this day and age

- Music Website normally put news on Album releases when its announced
- Singles always drop by bands/artist just before they release a record
- If you follow bands on Facebook, you get to hear the announcements even before major press
- Have a band announced a tour? The chances are, they are promoting a new album
- Just google your favourite bands, If they are active, google will let you know
- I follow websites that puts reviews a week earlier before the release drops
- This thread

Websites to recommend

- The Line of the Best Fit https://www.thelineofbestfit.com/
- Ja Ja Ja (For Nordic music) http://jajajamusic.com/
- Niche Music (Japanese website that covers smaller newer western indie music) http://nichemusic.info/
- DIY Magazine (As long as you don't trust their reviews too much since they are biased) http://diymag.com/
- Make Believe Melodie (A really good blog on Japanese Underground Electronica Music) http://makebelievemelodies.com/
- Pitchfork (Because why thy not?)
- NME (just for what the British scene is hyped about)

So the new Liars Track ''Cred Woas'' and its great. One of my favorite bands are releasing an album and I could get excite.

Searched online for the new album, and Holy Shit. Is this the worst Album cover of 2017?

Laurel Halo's new album is really good. She is easily in my top 10 of current day artists, her palette is just delightful

I have been meaning to give that one a listen. Thanks for reminding me. It has been getting a good reviews

That album cover is great. It's hilarious

Looks like a bootleg copy of a demo he started in his garage with his 8 year old sister doing the design cover for him

Faridmon, thanks for turning me on to The Drums. All I've been listening to the past couple days. My favorite songs are Rich Kids and Money.

It looks way more professionally designed and shot than that. Yeah it looks silly but that's because its purposeful camp lol. I mean it's angus as a runaway bride with the artist and title in a black metal font, that's awesome and actually reflects an aesthetic idea. A million times better than another cover where an indie rocker tosses out a #TBT childhood photo as if anybody outside of family friends following them on instagram should give a shit

This album is a bit over a month old so it might have come up at the time, but I only just learned about The Amazons the other day and I am in love with their debut album.

New Wolf Alice track is a new sound for them, but I'm digging it!

Also started listening to Black Honey properly (They've been on my radar for ages) and am enjoying their singles put out so far. Definitely (No surprise to most people) Blondie vibes off them.

St. Vincent's new song is so obviously about Cara Delevigne it's not funny haha. Still good song. Already have my ticket to the gig in October

New haim is as awful as the first one. Though I think fleetwood mac suck too so like a photocopy of that with a bloodless sheen and Hansen sister band gimmick isn't likely to work for me.

Is there a spotify playlist that gets updated with Indie music you'd all recommend? There are playlists I use for French and Japanese Indie stuff, but I don't know of a British/Canadian/American one.

Speaking of which, back when I was home I would listen to the Sirius channel that's for Canadian alt music, and that was like a whole new world. I'm not too familiar with the Canadian scene for the most part.

Pias has the Independent Music Monday Playlist. Updated weekly (on Mondays obviously). https://open.spotify.com/user/pias_uk/playlist/59y1SSfAYf2DE4PmHhwNh1

Yeah, yikes that was bad. First one at least had a few catchy tracks that caught on.

I'm looking for bands that sound similar to Solex and Cibo Matto, any recommendations?

Also holy shit, I've never liked Crass before, but something told me to check them out again and I've fallen in love hard with Penis Envy. This has seriously become one of my all time favorite albums.

Going to see Big Thief in September.

No opening acts currently listed. Interested to see who they play with. "Capacity" is growing on me. The two Shark songs and Mythological Beauty are great.

New Protomartyr album announced! New single, 'A Private Understanding', too. I think it's good but I don't really like loud/soft dynamics.

I only recently started listening to Big Thief but they're fantastic. The songwriting is really what jumped out to me on first listen. I prefer their first album so far but I can see Capacity growing on me too.

The new Public Service Broadcasting album is very good. I could never get past the inherent gimicky-ness of their other stuff but this one feels like they actually used their gimmick (instrumental music with vocal samples mostly from old government videos) to great effect by telling a small and personal story about the decline of the coal industry in Wales, with samples of actual interviews with the miners who worked there being used in conjunction with their usual stuff. Very weird and more "history through music" than anything but it's a good listen.

whew that Protomartyr track. Those drums! the beginning and quieter parts totally sound like Odyshape, just as the guitarist said they were aiming for

first is a little better but both are so frontloaded. "Falling" is a good song, then "Forever" was alright for a few listens before becoming grating, and the next 9 tracks are varying levels of bad. on the new one they can't even be good for a full song, "Want You Back" is decently catchy only until the godawful bridge and the entire rest of the album sucks.
