COMICS!!! |OT| July 2017 | Princess, I've Seen the Way You Look At Me.

Can I ask here for recs about good graphic novels released in the last 2-3 years?
5000KM Per Second and My Favorite Thing is Monsters are both really good recent GNs. I highly recommend both of them. If you want a good humor series, I'd look into the Megg and Mogg books: Megahex (more than 3 years old), Megg and Mogg In Amsterdam, and One More Year. They're really funny, and somewhat depressing, but they're really good reads and hold up well for rereads later on. Definitely not for everyone so you may want to check out a couple of strips on VICE if you're interested.

And while it's just a trade of a mini series and not really an original graphic novel like the other two, I also recommend checking out The Spire. It's excellent. A bunch of us here read it earlier this year and we all really enjoyed it.

Tyrant has already mentioned a couple I really enjoyed. I would also recommend

The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye
The Eternaut (<-- older graphic novel but translated into english very recently)
Panther (<-- Not recommended for younger audiences)
Moon Cop
The Best We Could Do
March (Books 1, 2 and 3)
The Longest Day Of The Future

I would like character disabilities to have more attention. Like the fact that Hawkguy is deaf or that Taskmaster can't remember things.

Well, Task's problem unfortuanately is he's a 'one-shot' type mostly who never gets consistent appearances. He doesn't stick around one comic long enough to really be more than a prop much of the time.

Van Lente alluded to his memory issues in Deadpool vs. Punisher though, which was nice.

Also really want to buy Spider-Men II #1, since I LOVED Spider-Men, and it's awesomely the same creative team, but I will probably wait for the trade.

First issue was pretty solid. Got introduced to Miles new actual love-interest going forward and got to see
616!Miles in the flesh.

Finally, a update on Ikemen Nightwing, with a tease of his sculpt.

So thinking of getting an iPad for comics and I read here about a a few of you guys are using pros though I also read a 9.7 would be fine for comics. I'm trying to justify getting a 10.5 inch 64gb or 256gb(overkill?) pro but I can't think of what I would use all that power for since I mainly want it for 120hz and the screen size. Anyway was just wondering what else you pro owners use it for aside from comics?. Also to note I have visa gift cards to burn on it or I could be responsible and get a laptop which frankly I would only need it potentially coding since a tablet would fulfill all my needs otherwise.

And on a more comic related note I'm currently reading through the Stracinzky Thor Omnibus and I borrowed way too many books from the library lol. Don't think I'm gonna read through em all now that I just got a switch too.

If you're buying the Pro and a pen the Marvel colouring app is pretty fun.

Otherwise tablets are for watching Netflix and Amazon Prime while on the toilet.

I use a Surface Pro 3 for reading and it's pretty great.
Yeah I'm also thinking getting a SP4 at a decent price. Probably refurbished since I could use it as a laptop still. Only downside afaik is no comixology app so I can't read offline since I'd have to use the site.

Snyder is so fucking great at set-up. Hope Metal pays off, but with Capullo back it'll surely be a guaranteed treat to look at.

Thanks, these look really cool! 👍 (except for the Eternaut; I already read it and I am not a fan)

The Casting: This was great set up weaken heavily by the art, the strongest being Romtia JR. I can't wait for Capullo on Metal.

Spider-Men II #1 - Holy shit, Bendis has finally clarified the whole "does Miles remember the Ultimate universe" thing. Took them long enough.

Quite blatantly, but at least it clears things up.

That's got to have an effect on him, right? I mean the
original Spider-Man he held up the legacy for, his ex-girlfriend, his team of Ultimates; they're all just dead.

Yeah. Romita's got the strongest pages. Sure. Whatever you say.

The hate Jim Lee gets nowadays is totally unwarranted and of the three artists on The Casting he's the one to actually knock it out of the park. Those Joker pages are fucking savage.

Reading Adventures of Superman, and MAN would it be cool to see Jeff Parker and Chris Samnee make an ongoing out of it (instead of different writers and artists every ~10 page story).

UWvjua.jpg

IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL. Samnee is one of the best. Him and Shaner have a similar style and they kill it every time.

Dark Days, All Metal, Rock Forever, The Casting #1 - Ballsy Snyder. In here we have
another remix for the Hawks (who are now much older as a concept than they were before and linked to the Blackhawks and Challengers of the Unknown), an eternal wars between Bats and Hawks, Duke being a meta-human, and metas being linked to the Nth metal, which is now the Ninth Metal.
That's a lot in there. No clue where this crossover is going.

And yes, Romita's pages were the weakest in there.

Woah, what. Kubert and Lee were WAAAAY better than JRJR's art.

At least his art this issue was better than his worst-of-his-career art last issue.

It happens, universes blow up, no need to be a pussy about it. :p

Jim Lee gets hate? All the art I see of his is amazing. Am I missing something?

Oh, he's a great artist. People just get annoyed how little/slow he draws.

If I'm remembering correctly, he first committed to 12 issues of Suicide Squad Rebirth, and then cut that in half to six, and then just the first ~12 pages of six issues.

Miles and peter
remembering the ultimate universe is dumb. I feel unless it's a character like power girl or a multiversity character then it just needlessly complicates things.

My girls Hisako and Laura? We in there
What's the longest Brisson has been on a Marvel book? Feels like all his recent ones have been cancelled within 7 issues.
He's on OML right now
Thank god Shatterstar still has his stupid as fuck Liefeld designed two bladed swords.
I'm sorry, "stupid?" How dare you, sir.
It's less keeping two Thors around and more that Aaron has been writing towards having to deal with the cancer thing for a while now.

I wouldn't be surprised if they swerve and save her at the end of the arc, but this all fits within his larger tale.
Exactly. She'll get rezzed by the Mother Storm.

Oh my god it's perfect
Is there any love for the Marvel Original Graphic Novel line?
Starlin's Thanos series is trippy and wild. No More Humans and Rage of Ultron were both really good.

I've had both an iPad Air 9.7 and the new iPad Pro 10.5. The slightly larger screen is a *bit* better for comics, but it's not a huge difference. And it's not really a noticable difference at all for video like Netflix or Hulu or whatever. If you're not sure you need the Pro, just get the cheaper iPad and use the (significant!) cost differential for other stuff.

Gah can't make up my mind but I think a good option would be get the 2017 iPad since I could get the 32GB for nearly free with my gift cards in which case I can wait for fall for hopefully a sale. Then for school I'll get an xps 13 or something. Looked into the surface and after some thinking I really just want a tablet for fun. Also any reason to spring for a 128gb or do comics not take up alot of room?. I have a mountain of comics waiting thanks to that absurd Amazon sale.

And going off wirecutter yeah I really can't justify all that added power for what I'll be using it for. http://m.thewirecutter.com/reviews/the-ipad-is-the-best-tablet/
