Of course.

2019/2020 is the timeline for the new generation... you need to start to work at least 2 years early.

Can't see myself buying another Xbox to be honest, definitely not convinced by them anymore, either in the games they offer or Xbox Live.

When sony comes out with a PS5, there is no way MS can force the industry to continue to support XB1 and Scorpio and indefinitely tie their games down. they know that, which is why they are focused on a new machine.

MS won't need to force them, that's the beauty of it.

What’s with all the “of course they are, no shit sherlock, it’s obvious”??
I was under the impression with Play Anywhere and no exclusives and no investment in first party and expensive refresh that Xbox as a console will decline into obscurity?

Microsoft is surely focused on hardware nowadays....So much talk and focus on hardware, when it is their software they should be paying attention to....

Amazing. Microsoft are planning the next Xbox just so they can get out of the business, lol.

Didn't you know?
Companies investing large amounts of manpower and money in new products is an unmistakable indicator that they want to retire the respective business as soon as possible.

With all this talk about Sony developing a new Playstation console, I wouldn't be surprised if their Playstation division will have been disbanded by 2019 at the latest.

Besides being a stupid announcement for obvious reasons. Way to make people think, "Why should I buy this iterative thing when the next one might come out in a few years", even if not the case.

Its like telling me next years Fifa is being developed. It would be more surprising if the news was that it wasnt being developed. Then that would make things interesting. But I guess confirmation is news, so its worthy of a discussion. Hopefully their branding team get their heads out of their arse and actually come up with a good name for the next Xbox. Xbox One is a nightmare, dont understand how you could approve such an awful name, as well as the Wii U too haha.

It must be really cool - to sit in a conference room and talk about new consoles and start the planning. I really wonder how the expectations differ from the finished product.

People are saying no shit, but then when the PS5 gets announced and released for '19 and the Xbox is not far off it, people will say its reactionary.

At least they're not pulling out of the console industry ey?
Isn't every console reactionary? I mean, they don't sit down and develop budgets and project plan years out or have a roadmap. They don't analyze trends in manufacturing and chip development to secure future chips.

They all just get is see what is revealed and then scramble to get a console together in less than 12 months.

Pretty much. I'm surprised, tbh. Competition is good though, so I'm glad they'll keep making consoles.

'19? I'd be amazed.

Meanwhile, the hardware folk at Nintendo and Sony are sitting around, twiddling their thumbs. Microsoft is damn smart for having their employees working.

Jez doesn't tweet or write for GAF.

The fact that there might be very early prototypes of the next xbox being designed right now is not something every Windows Central reader has thought of, I bet. I know it hadn't crossed my mind even though it seems obvious now as most point out.

Good news, MS will be ready to punch back and never again being behind..simultaneous launch alongside PS5, things will get very, very interesting..fax!

What's even more amazing is how you read that as them getting out of the business when I said nothing about them getting out of the business.

If MS can get other companies to make multimedia computers that's running a closed Windows/Xbox OS that's a win for them.

Presumably at least halfway through the current generation, a console manufacturer is starting to design the next version of their long-running hardware line? A process which even in an ideal scenario takes years of time?

Absolutely impossible.

I think Microsoft will definitely try to go for the better specs over PS5 next go around. No more power/resolution narrative.

XBOX One Xtra
XBOX One Xcess
XBOX One Xillerating
XBOX One XX(NSFW)

Because they two aren't exactly related?

The success or failure of the next Xbox doesn't negate the creation aspect of it.

This might sound like Captain Obvious (and it is) but the way some of those threads read about PS5 it's nice to remind people that Sony aren't the only ones working on a next gen console. In fact, I'm personally expecting the NextBox to be more powerful than PS5.

I fully expect the next Xbox to beat PS5 in terms of power as well, but only because I think it'll release a year or two later. Honestly, I'm pretty ok with that as it makes it easier for me to afford buying every console.

That's what I'm thinking as well. Microsoft could be last out the gate.

Yeah, I don't see them matching PS5 release date, not with them pushing out the $499 X at the end of this year. So unless Sony hold on and release PS5 much later then expected, I think the next Xbox will come a year or 2 after PS5, so it would be more powerful.

Guess we will be seeing a back and fourth with who has the most power from now on then.

This. The XBOX that follows the launch of this one should release after the Playstation 5 should almost dictate that the tech inside should be more powerful. Why would it not be that way? Wouldn't make any sense.

Edit: Also, for me, what I need an XBOX console to have for it are games I can't play on a Playstation. Good ones, and I'm likely in on it at some point if not at launch. Same reasons I buy Playstation consoles when they come out. I like the games on there that I can't play on XBOX.

Oh, you got them 🙄🙄🙄

It is obvious, guess what? Nintendo is likely working on their successor too. They're aren't going to wake up five years from now, and go, "you know what?" "We should start working on our next system." smh

I think the next Xbox will be stronger than PS5 even with similar release dates. That's just the feeling MS seems to be giving off with how they are treating the XB1X and their increased focus on power.
