FF12 makes me realize even more how bad 15 is

XII, XIII and XV all occupy the same "flawed but I can see a good core game here" space for me. XII implodes when the game runs out of scenario, XIII forgot to add choice in the progression systems and XV needed more time to make more quest set pieces.

I really liked XV and replaying XII is making its faults all the more obvious. The writing quality and world building of the Ivalice games is far ahead of most others in the series.

I probably hate FFXII and FFXV equally but there is at least something about FFXII that makes me want to give it chance after chance to click.

I think the key thing is how single-player FFs basically took a nosedive in quality after IX.

The point for me is I don't want to make a thread like this, I want to be saying how XV was incredible.

12 at the time I enjoyed but only moderately, and that was because it didn't have the zodiac system in place.. That was my main issue with 12 originally.

I felt overall tho it still was within the final fantasy spectrum, even if more on that edge.

Comparing 12 and 15 are so different, it isn't really worth comparing the 2. Like comparing bowling and baseball.... I mean they both have a ball or a chocobo in there somewhere, maybe some beer or a phoenix down is involved in some way. Other than that, two different sports.

Yep, playing 12 for the first time and having a guided story is a welcoming change. FF15 was an open world mess.

The great thing is it's a guided story that actually makes sense but it still has a huge open world to explore and things to do. (It's mostly hunts, but still the hunts are far far better than XV).

I just want Final Fantasy to be something well put together and that actually feels complete when I finish it again. I don't expect it to happen though. We will get piece meal FFVII while they start and stop FFXVI 3 times before forcing something out in 2 years.

I jumped in on FFXIV properly this week.

There is a quest chain that is like 20 quests deep that has you going all around the world to essentially make a fucking sandwich. Then when all the food is assembled the characters are like lol jk.

Meanwhile Titan is about the blow up the planet.

Gaaaaah, thank god you can have all classes on one character because I am never making an alt for this game.

I started ARR fresh last month and was screaming at my system during the Titan quest. Thankfully the game gets much better after that but I would not be shocked if that quest line singlehandedly stopped people from playing.

Everyone quotin' my post with claims that the best they've got in the ensuing 11 years is Persona and Xenoblade is proof that I'm right!!!

Nope, X is a masterpiece. It set the standard for mainstream turn based systems that is still used today by most JRPGs and had a great scenario and is to this day the only FF that nails its ending.

FFX is a masterpiece in making Exposition: The Game, that's for sure.

Once you reach Level 50 and beyond? Sure.

Before that it's pretty boring.

"Oh, you just defeated TWO godlike beings? Awesome! Go fetch some items for this banquet"

I almost burned out before the game really got good. Glad I stuck with it but damn.

Thank. You.

Seriously, I bought ARR and Heavensward of xmas Steam sale because of how highly praised it is on here.

I made it through ten hours of absolute shit-tier mmo fetch quests with minimal story/cutscenes/narrative and thought everyone who liked that game was brainwashed.

Idk, maybe HW and Storm whatever are way better, but the whole "just trudge your way through all the garbage to get to level 50" is an absolute deal breaker.

It's really too bad because I wanted to like that game so much.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
Personally I was extremely disappointed with FFXII when I first played it in 2006.

Boring story, forgettable characters and a combat system which quickly hits its peak. A lot of backtracking and the game was just generally boring. I remember going from place to place expecting the story to pick up but it just got worse and worse.

I have Zodiac Age which Ill give another try. Sure, FFXII isnt a bad game but its boring which is just as much of a crime. As someone whose not into MMOs, the series peaked at FFX for me.

XII was good but it had a lot of flaws too, especially with how padded and dragged out the latter half of the game is. I've never really understood all the praise it gets here.

It and XV are both smack in the middle of my FF ranking list.
XV is higher. At least it had fun combat

Final Fantasy fans with their hyperbole. Threads like this make me ashamed to like the series, and this one is destined to devolve into a cesspool.

I'm not even this critical about my least favorite games.

XII was shit. XV was good.

Dunno how the remake is, but XII was a terrible game.

No, you just don't get it. I guess XII was either too progressive for some or it alienated by not being an FFX rehash.

Well, FFXII is one of the best FFs ever.

And my hot take for this thread is that Zodiac Age makes me realize how much better FFXII is than Xenoblade and how I was deceived by people saying that Xenoblade was better.

On the flip side, playing FF12 again makes me appreciate the world design, controls, and feel of FF15 way more.

i loved FF15 and I loved ff12 the moment it launched.

It's because contingents of GAF occasionally have a hard-on for Japanese games that don't "act" or "look" Japanese so they can feel less yucky about liking them.

Same. It's amazing to return to FFXII. It's a goddamn PS2 port/remaster and it's still feels and plays a dozen times better than FFXV. The story is engaging, the characters are fantastic, the world doesn't feel empty and soulless, the combat is amazing, the sidequests aren't boring slogs... Everything FFXV wasn't, FFXII is.

Is FFXV a "bad game" in the same way GAF calls MGSV a "bad game?" Because MGSV was a very good game.

MGSV is my favorite in the series and the best stealth game ever IMO. FFXV is legit trash.

I enjoyed my time with XV a lot more than XII. I'm willing to give XII a.... third chance, I guess, to see if the Zodiac Class system and QOL changes can turn my opinion around, but even then I doubt it would jump that many positions in my personal ranking of the series.

It's interesting to see how people suddenly like this game after it was so heavily critisized back in the days for not being "FF-like" enough. I wouldn't be surprised to see the same thread about XV in the future.

LOL

Also,
Every game is very different.

FF12 is like a hybrid of Vagrant story & Final Fantasy Tactics
Both very cool.

I see FFXV more in the vein of Final Fantasy 7 & 8 + open world of course.
