Elite Dangerous: Horizons |OT| Just scratching the surface

I'd love to play Elite in VR, but I can't for two reasons:

1. I don't own a VR headset for the PC, and
2. my PC ain't beefy enough to run it if I did!

Someday though, someday...

Same. I'm actually pretty impressed with how well my little Alpha chugs along with ED.

I have to re-learn how to dock all my ships in VR.

When played normally I can zoom through the mail slot at high speed without an issue. In VR I've already crashed 5 times doing it.

The 100m/s speed limit makes more sense in VR.

I remember seeing a video of someone boosting an FDL in the mail slot and landing all in one swift motion, no adjustment at the end. I love flying quickly into the mail slot.

that's what I do with my Cutter. I know exactly when to do my last boost to line up smoothly with the door and be in the blue zone for touchdown.

always feels good.

This is the exact opposite of me. I'm ok docking on a 2D screen, but VR, I've basically mastered it..

This Empire rep grind is brutal. A week of Quince got me to Count rank but now I don't know what to do for the remaining 3 ranks. It's really slow in Quince and Wu Guinaga

The problem with "the grind" is playing as one. I am an Imperial Duke now. I didn't grind for that. I just played the game. I've varied my activities, done CGs, bounty hunted, ran missions and passengers. I've explored. I've just had fun and varied my gameplay. And eventually the ranks came.

Ok, so just tried Elite: Dangerous in VR (Oculus Rift) for the first time and holy shit.

As I type this the grin is still on my face. I do have a few points I need to make though both about Elite and VR in general from my first hour or so fooling around with it..

  • The ASP Explorer cockpit in VR might be my favorite thing I've ever seen.
  • The Bobble heads are there! I know they are not actually there, in fact nothing is there but dammit they are there!
  • The Galaxy and System maps are god awful in VR and whoever designed them should feel bad.
  • Holy scale batman! The SRV's tires are much larger than I thought they would be and don't get me started on the size of the ASP when I called it down for landing.
  • We defiantly are not there in terms of resolution right now. The screendoor effect is real and text can be a pain to read but I'm all in.
  • Looking at my Holo-Me in VR actually kinda freaked me out at first. Like, there's just a person standing there.
  • The ship UI in VR is something to behold, straight outta Minority Report.

The other week I decided to do with my brother to visit one of the Thargoid sites, in VR. After a bit of light stealth to sneak by the player ships that were camping the site killing anyone they saw, we managed to sneak our SRVs in. Shit was fucking BEAUTIFUL. Got scanned by a Thargoid ship on the way back out (which I had no idea was even a thing, so I freaked out), and the sense of scale was ridiculous. Instantly on of my favourite moments in gaming ever.

I put the game aside about a year ago and wanted to test it in VR over the weekend. The problem is I can't logging into the launcher because the 'verification' emails don't arrive. I'm trying to fix this now for two days. Is this a known issue?

Boy that feels good.

I've found that the standard color scheme of the UI is probably the worst for text readability. I'm running a green scheme now, and that makes text readable enough were it isn't really a problem anymore.

Another newbie question: is the 1D intermediate discovery scanner a worthwhile purchase? How much extra income can I generate with that?

It's got a 1000ls range (or about 2 AU) which is largely insignificant. You could probably do something better with the slot. If you're using a discovery scanner to get around colonized space, remember Nav Beacons can be scanned to get a full system manifest.

I'm such a novice... I randomly get those "new astronomic discovery" pop-ups when I fly through systems and I can sell that data to the cartographics. Wouldn't that scanner get me more such discoveries?

So my entire progress just stopped updating itself...

I've sold goods at 246 stations in order to get the trophy for trading at 250 different stations and it fuckin' just stopped updating itself 4 stations before reaching the goal, despite saying that it did indeed update '0 seconds ago'.

The only thing that is currently accurate in my stats is my bank account, I've never felt so boned while playing a game, ever. The support suggested I log out of the game, which, duh, I did like 20 times yesterday before even thinking of writing to them, and today it's still broken, fuckin' hell. :/

It would be extreamly painful...
So I picked up a Dolphin. I couldn't find a Ernie Ford song that felt appropriate for a luxury passenger ship (since country songs about rural American life don't exactly scream "luxury", I guess). I looked up what passenger and cruise ships were normally named after, and after a bit of deliberation the Lady Coconna was christened with a bottle of Centauri Mega Gin broken on her bow. (don't try this in zero gravity by the way, the cleanup is much more trouble than it's worth)

I think it's almost made back the cost in less than a day, with just passenger transport missions. Really liking these missions, even the detours to pick up Consumer Technology for rich tourists. Those guys really like their gameboys for long trips.

Just got interdicted on a tourist ferrying mission, though. Why do pirates want tourists so much? Ransom, I guess? Doesn't matter, I managed to boost out of there in no time. Really enjoying flying this ship.

this would actually be no problem to clean up because exposing liquids to a vacuum they would quickly disperse into the void and be gone in seconds.

Really ships in elite shouldn't have engine trails for the same reason but then you can't sell engine trail cosmetics.

I don't think it's a vacuum inside the stations though, hence the bubble/field on the mail slot.

I was tempted by engine trails, I've run out of the 1000 frontier points I got with the pack though. I'm currently trying not to consider buying more. But paint jobs though.

Fuck this CQC grind, at this rate it will be another 6 months before I prestige and get access to CD-43 11917. It takes like two hours just to get through a rank, but the problem is how much time I spend waiting for a game. I'll probably hit Elite in something before I even prestige once.

I actually just did the math. I still need 132,409xp to prestige. I just played an hour now and got a little over 3k. So I'm looking at another 44 hours of playtime, that's not counting the time spent waiting.

What does that system even offer? You are probably better off just going for Elite in one of the other three and get Founder's World access.

Stepped up my game today. Headed over to Empire territory for the first time and randomly found a station that looks like a SimCity arcology! I don't know how common those are, but I plan to make a station like that my home base. Then I outfitted my Hauler with a business cabin, hopped to the next system over, and found a passenger mission that paid 1.1 million when my bankroll was 700k! Dolphin time...

It has discounts on weapons and combat ships. However, it's more of a prestige thing! Plus the main planet Ares is pretty!
I can't remember the name of the Founder's World system, but isn't that it? That sounds familiar, and I think you are better off going for Elite in Combat, Trade, or Exploration instead of CQC. So few people play CQC, and with the other things, you can actually make progress in the main game and have money for that nice discounted stuff.

Founder's World is just a straight 10% discount on everything. CD-43 11917 is just weapons and combat ships. For instance, the FDL has a 20% discount there. I enjoy CQC so I don't mind. The rewards suck, but the combat is much better than the main game imo.

Made a 1st discovery on this moon orbiting a gas giant, actually found one with an orbit that isn't parallel with the rings so you can see them from the surface. That and the planet wasn't beige:

Passenger mission took me to a dying star with a planet in tight orbit so it was a spicy approach that costed a heat sink to make.

So I finish ferrying some tourist to a surface colony on some backwater in Federal space. I scan the passenger boards for any good transport missions, but the only/best one I can see is for some refugees.

15 refugees, really desperate to get off this rock and to a station accepting asylum in a different system. They're only offering 80k, but I decide that it's better than nothing and let 'em on.

I ferry them to the station, uneventfully. We land, they thank me and pay me the 80k plus four tons of computer parts. Okay, I guess.

I read my phone for a bit before checking the passenger boards for a new fare. I see:

"14 refugees seeking transport - 500k"

Now there's a bunch of refugees wanting off this apparent hellhole of a station. They want transport to a colony in a nearby system that's accepting refugees. It's, you guessed it, the same place I just took the previous bunch from.

I'm not saying it's the same bunch. But it is hilarious.

Nice find and pics! Passenger missions sound fun. Will be looking to those once my standing is a bit higher.

Speaking of spicy approaches...
Casually making my way back from the CG when I find myself careering past this bad boy. Had an emergency drop out and immediately bricked it. Popped a sink just in time and had to get a shot on my way out.

Love how the quick change in temperature frosts up your canopy. Don't think I'll ever tire of little details like that.

Edit:
lol at the story above. What happened to that one guy?!

I finally starting playing seriously but i ran into a problem. I start a character, get a mission for outside the current system, I target the system and go into frameshift. But it just takes me to a nav beacon and never outside the system. What am I doing wrong?

Alright, just be prepared for the longer haul than any of the other ranks.

IMO there are lots of issues with CQC which lead it to being unpopular that I think could be fixed. Just a few ideas (that I know FD won't listen to):

1. Different classes of ships. Leave the current ships in the "light fighter" class, have something like a medium fighter class to include your Vultures, FDLs, etc. Have a "Juggernaut" class for your Anacondas, Cutters, Corvettes, etc.
2. Have some kind of mode where everyone uses their ships from the main game. While having just a standard set of ships and loadouts is going, having something where players can practice fighting other players with their loadouts.
3. Make some of the ships have Engineered modules, or maybe have them as "perks".

That's the biggest problem; FD just doesn't give a fuck. They act like it's not even there. The last real update to it was prior Horizon and all they did was add the Imperial Fighter. Like the Taipan Fighter was released and they couldn't even add it to CQC.

The main issues are rewards and lack of incentives to play. Is the gameplay fun? Absolutely. However, the rewards are beyond horrendous. I've made only 402k credits. 30 hours and 402k credits, it's just insulting. Yet, someone can play the main game for 30 hours and make 100s of millions.

Also if they added bots it would help a lot. No more waiting for games and people can practice against them. I see it all the time. I join a game and I completely destroy everyone and it's not even close, that's because they are all level 1-10. They end up quitting and not coming back. On the flip side I join games against people that are multiple prestiges and they are flying circles around me and it's not even fun to play against them. Adding bots would help with this problem.

So I finally decided to add a mining laser, refinery and collectors to start doing mining missions...

I got the missions but now how do I find the actual asteroids to mine from?

Planetary rings and asteroid belts. Use a detailed surface scanner on an 'unknown' planet/belt to see what type it is and how much 'reserves' it has.
Or use some 3rd party website to find a suitable ring system.

Most missions are for things found in 'metallic' rings (which are not the same as 'metal-rich' rings).

Land anywhere in the ring for mining. A resource extraction zone has higher yield rocks, but you'll be attacked constantly so I would avoid them.

So i just made it to the galactic core after 2yrs. I've been massively lazy about playing this game. so rewarding now to make my way back but i'm not sure on what route to take back. Also are there any stations near the core?

So yeah I feel like I've been doing that all afternoon and I have barely a couple of units of ressource collected....

Explanation please? Why and how are systems coupled on the CQC mode? Huh?

I've been playing on my Xbox and felt the same... I would love to have a crack at this in VR.

Up until 10 minutes ago I was in the same boat, however, I just saw an Oculus Rift DK1 on eBay for £40 and impulse bought it.

I have no idea if my aged pc will be any good. I have a nasty feeling a graphics card upgrade will be needed, but hey, for £40 it's worth a try right?

Anyway, to any pc players still lurking in this thread, what will the quality of a DK1 be like?

Be honest, if £40 for a DK1 is a waste of time, tell me so I don't waste to much effort on it!

Also, are there any tips you can give to aid set up?

Started playing the game again thanks to some friends who bought a rift with the recent discount :D

It is still fun and it's great to see the progress - even if small - the game made. Bought me a Dolphin for collecting and I kinda love it. 28LY range without engineering is not that bad.

But I can't help myself, the FAS is my most loved ship still.

I have been playing for about an hour with my new T.16000M. Thoughts so far: there isn't much of a contest, this is better than the X52. Throttle is a straight upgrade, and analog horizonal and vertical thrust is a godsend. I like the buttons on the throttle, as well as the POV hats. The stick feels more stiff, in a good way where it doesn't feel like it is trying to bounce the other direction when your let go. The only "issue" I have so far is learning where the buttons are blind, but that issue lies with me, not to stick. It also doesn't have a lot of the useless crap the X52 has, like the screen.

This is likely below the Warthog, but definitely above the X52 in quality.

I have this on PC but want to get it on Xbox One in anticipation of the XOne X and 4k support. I love playing on a joystick mostly because it eliminates the constant inadvertent roll I experience when using a controller.

Are there any controller settings you all can recommend that would eliminate or at least minimize that problem?

Thanks!
