Those movesets... Are a bit on the nose haha, but then again this is literally a game for Melee fans so it makes sense.

Not crazy about some character designs or the fact that it's F2P, but it looks fun. I'd love to try it.

Those sound effects need some work but what bugs me more than anything is those character designs look straight out of the early 2000s.

I hope they have more interesting characters than just bipedal humanoids. I hope it turns out well because I'm certainly not getting that Smash itch scratched by Smash 4.

ehh not digging those character designs at all. Like they started out kinda eh but they kept getting worse as the trailer went along. Hopefully the rest of the cast looks better and the game is fun. As of right now though, I'm not interested.

That sword fighter is basically a Marth clone.

lol ya thats the same thing i thought

Definately need to fix the hit sound effects sounds like two cats fighting inside a pillow fort. Every single smash including Smash 64 had better and more satisfying hit sounds. I'll chalk that up to being early in development and stuff.

Well, they sure did the minimum to clear copyright infringement. It's kinda funny though, the general soullessness presented is exactly what I see with competitive Smash. The trimmings, items and chaos really make the game for me. But it'd be cool if they could get the competitive community on board, you can at least tell they are passionate.

At least they avoided the mistake of a "realistic" artysle because with a small budget, that wouldn't work.

But something still seems off on the art. And that's very important.
Cause if this game had a great art style, the comments would probably be a bit different.

i also think they should've made sure their trailer had more hit and dust effects, and good sounds effects. Cause that makes a HUGE difference. That needed to be there imo. I think it will be added eventually but first impressions are key. (also needed a slightly better cut trailer)

trying to be kinda constructive

Think they should've waited a little longer before their debut. This looks really rushed.

pretty much

I'm pretty sure the copy pasting is very deliberate because this is essentially a game for Melee players who may not want to let go of the characters they're used to. Looks shameless at first but makes sense.

Hell, recreating those along with the physics must have been some serious work, so this is impressive.

Given that they are coming purely from taking Melee and reskinning it and going from there, I can understand the lack of aesthetics at this time.

It's something to look forward to though if it does well.

I've yet to see an indie Smash clone that didn't have boring and generic character designs and this is once again no exception.

I think recreating melee (or any fighting game really) is one of the most boring and creatively bankrupt things possible. If you're going to make a new game, try to make something new and different about it. This is why I laugh when people say Project M were better game developers than the actual smash teams. It's very goddamn easy to copy, it's much harder to try and introduce something new

Been following this game since its inception about a year ago, and I can say that uuuhh....
Well it definitely needs some more polish, lol, and the art style sadly feels pretty generic, but at least the core basics still seem to be there. Lady Marth seems like its cutting a bit close though.

I guess it makes sense that they want to show off the staple characters for Smash. Fox, Marth, and Captain Falcon. They did have Ganondorf with a dropkick in that green character so that's kind of neat. But yeah they really have to show a couple of their unique characters to separate them from Smash a bit.

I imagine that some animations will get tweaked and perhaps changed as time goes on.

I wouldn't mind playing this! It being free to play is very nice!

Remember that time Sony was making a Smash Bros. game and we all thought "I hope they don't just straight clone Smash", and then the game came out and we were like "Sorry, we were wrong, you should have just copied the code or something".

Wavedash has some former Project M devs on board. This is a game dedicated to bringing out a platform fighter in the style of Melee, and there are certain staples that you have to bring along if you want to win that audience over. Marth and Fox are iconic, they need to be there. Shine needs to be in that game for people to give it a shot, Ken combos need to be there, I bet you anything that a character will have Falco pillars. They're making the correct moves by evoking it so clearly and shamelessly. They'll probably bring unique characters too, but they need the Ryus and Kens there.

Animations look rough, but pre-alpha.

I'm excited about it, but I really hope they can clean it up and their F2P model isn't trash.

I hate this character artstyle. I'm not sure what to call it, but it's everywhere nowadays. Pretty much all of Blizzard's games (WoW, Diablo 3, Overwatch to an extent), The Darwin Project (game with the screaming announcer from the MS press conference), Dauntless (that Monster Hunter f2p clone), and now this.

I guess it's just bright colors with flat character textures, it looks so ugh to me.

As a melee player, I have to say that I have yet to see a platform fighter outside the smash series look good overall. They all just seem janky. I think it's a combination of not having good looking characters (which you probably can't beat the history of nintendo franchises) and the sound design for them always seem off. They aren't heavy sounds, makes it seem the hits are weak.
