I tried to play Horizon after Zelda, and the lack of motion control aiming upset me

Like, maybe if you have terrible aim you need the assistance or something? BotW arrows are already easy as hell to hit.

Ah that good old "waggle is casual" argument. Gyro is not assistance, it's a superior, more user-friendly control method that's making the best of modern tech. We are far beyond Wii-era waggle. That generation was necessary babysteps to get where we are today. Now of course, to each his own. But let's skip this backwards bs that right stick-aiming is hardcore and gyro is casual.

Gyro aiming is awful, I turned that shit off after an hour. Combat in Zelda in general is dated and the worst part of the game for me, I go to great lengths to avoid battles. Endless supply of the same boring enemies got old fast, very little variety.

Splatoon controls are completely broken if you don't use gyro. If you're sidestepping, you just about have someone in your crosshairs and you're trying to line them up, the camera will start gradually turning without any input from the right stick. Makes me basically unable to play it, and I'm not alone. There was a designer from Naughty Dog who posted similar sentiments on Twitter about the first game.

Is anyone who wants a more precise control method automatically terrible? It's not an aim assist- it's the opposite.

BoTW was actually the only game I liked the gyro aiming in though. I suck at Splatoon.

Games having that option would be nice for the people who want it. I don't know why people are so resistant to the option besides "motion controls."

I wouldn't be against the option but for myself i hate motion controls. I've become so used to aiming with the analogue that it just feels natural and i can do it whilst sat back and relaxing.

With motion controls you have to hold the controller in a certain way and I'm not about that life

I had the same issue with playing metroid prime 3 with the wii, didn't enjoy it as much as the first two on game cube

Yeah maybe I just encountered less Lynels than you and saved up some weapons because now i have like 10 chests on the map marked with some sweet buffed stuff in there and 14 weapons with me. I admit I never use the great boomerang because it's just too cool to let it break. :p

Well I've unlocked and upgraded every single non dlc outfit so I guess you might be right. My inventory is full of Lynel weapons lol

Not being able to use the great boomerang because it'll break is fuding annoying, is it not?

Obviously lol.

Yup lol

I think Lynels and hard tests of strenghts are the only cases where the weapons breaking as fast as they do is a 100% negative, because they have so much health and defense that if your stuff is not durability or damage buffed to the max you might as well lose half your weapons...If you're not spamming 50 arrows or 300 bombs or something, which just adds to the tedium fighting them.

Except using ancient weapons on test guardians i guess, then it goes fast and you normally get as many weapons out of them as you wasted on them, at least in my experience.

Yeah that's right.

I have a strict policy of using Lynel weaponry against them. I have accumulated quite a bit during my battles.

So even the gyro aiming is "perfect" huh? Wow, BoTW really can do no wrong. This is coming from someone who loves the game, too.

Horizon is the better game for me in almost every respect aside from the freedom to explore. Presentation, story, characters, combat, controls, graphics...all way better, imo.

That gyro aiming is a nuisance.

I turned those off instantly, they're terrible. Tried turning them back on for that archery trial and they made me even worse at it.

Hate analog aiming. Rather have mouse or gyro like in BotW. Wish I could transfer my Overwatch stuff to PC but that isn't happening.

I love people like you who assume that your preference is the "correct" one and that everyone who doesn't agree is a fanboy/mindless person. Keep it going, dude!

Did I say that?

I absolutely love BoTW, but I'm baffled by how it's not being faulted for anything, not even the horrendous pop-in I've been seeing lately. The gyro aiming is purely a matter of preference; it's not the goddamn standard by which all other games need to adhere to. And certainly not one which is already proven in the area of combat.

This whole "BOTW should set the standard for everything" is getting a little ridiculous.

I enjoy gyro aiming, but for some reason botw gyro feels a lot more sluggish on the switch(joycons) than skyward sword on the wii. Aiming with the bow feels fine, but its some of the puzzles when you have to rotate objects that are a total pain.

The OP didn't call the game "perfect" (and since you aren't quoting anybody you're directly replying to OP), OP also didn't say the game was flawless, he/she just prefers gyro aiming and wishes it to be in other games, he gave all the other Zelda remakes and Splatoon as example too. And you probably haven't seen my Switch tech analysis thread but I've definitely trashed it for poor frame rate, amateurish optimization and engine problems such as pop in and adaptive resolution.

I didn't see your thread, I'm afraid.

I can adapt to whatever I'm playing. Just because I primarily use a mouse doesn't mean I feel aiming with gyros or sticks sucks.

It would however make sense to add gyro aiming to Sony's games that make use of it. To my knowledge the DS4 has this functionality just like the DS3 did, and Sony's no stranger to it. It's just odd that it doesn't get implemented.

i'm with you op.

But i simply suck at aiming with an analog, never ever learned how to be fast and precise.
Gyro is simply more natural.

Yep, totally happened to me too. I played HZD after BOTW and i instinctively tried to use the controller to aim and was kind of annoyed/disappointed when it didn't work. That said I did get used to it pretty quick and didn't really think about it after the game got going. It's balanced well enough around it's particular aiming, but yeah man that gyro aiming in BOTW is just beautiful.

I would've appreciated that for sure. Especially odd because it was a feature Guerrilla had in their PS3 Killzone games and it was great.

I really like gyro for fine-tuning my aim.

I was at a point where half my inventory was full of them and I thought that's kinda lame and stopped hunting Lynels for a bit. Doing too much of the same thing burns me out, especially in open world games.

Same with upgrading the stuff actually. I noticed at one point where i had to walk around the death mountain area like an idiot for like 30 mins even with the annoying search function on to find some butterflies that this is heading into the direction other open world games go and that it's not why i like this game more than others, hell, love it even. And just stopped hunting for them. Only have half of the stuff at 4 stars. And that's ok, because all it does is making the game easier and it's easy enough in late game lol. (Except when you walk into the castle area and attack like 2 or 3 guradians at once.)

Dragons is another thing. I went from "Oh my god what is this! And oooh that music holy shit this game! Can I climb it?" to "FFs you POS appear already I need your dumb horn." As soon the game dives into normal open world tropes too much it gets kinda awful, so I just try to avoid that stuff as much as possible.

Not being able to use the great boomerang because it'll break is fuding annoying, is it not?

It kind of is, though I already used one and kept the buffed one. When the second DLC comes out I'll do that and collect the last 2 memories I'm missing.

When that happens I won't return to that current save file again after I beat it so I can use everything I want without regret. There is an end to the game after all and what good does it do me when I keep weapons til after the bossfight.

Yeah that's right.

I have a strict policy of using Lynel weaponry against them. I have accumulated quite a bit during my battles.

The fact you have that policy in place (and so did I), so you don't lose anything else is kinda sad, and it also adds to the tedium imo. Also the Lynel Bows are way too good. As soon you got one or two of them its gg.

No accounting for taste, I suppose. You're free to enjoy your weird bow/gun hybrid on Horizon with inaccurate analog sticks.
Ermmm analogue sticks would be more accurate than any form of gyro aiming because there's zero sway with analogue sticks and the gyro isn't a 1:1 input method like a mouse (yes analogues aren't 1:1 either but they don't rely on motion)

Gyro aiming would make for a snappier aim but not necessarily more accurate...especially when aiming at a distance, it's not a mouse.

I tried Overwatch on PS4 recently and was disappointed to find there's no option for gyro aiming. Seems an odd omission for such a well supported game.

It's great in Zelda, really fluid and natural; I'd be fine-tuning arrows with it without even thinking to the point where it feels weird when it's gone.

They need the next gen Xbox and playstation controller to be split into 2. No reason why it shouldn't be. They should have motion/pointer controls built in.

Gives more flexibility for how/where you hold your hands when playing traditional games too.

You don't know how gyro aiming works.

Gyroscopic aiming is the best thing to come out of the Wii's motion controls, I wish I could somehow use it with Overwatch on PC because I hate analog and mouse aiming after playing with gyro.

How can you hate mouse aiming? You'd rather tilt a piece of plastic to adjust a targeting reticule? It's far clunkier then the speed and precision of a mouse.

Using gyro to draw back the bow, fine, but arguing for motion controls as an 'evolution' is a bit moot when PSVR could offer a far superior vision based aiming system, like in RE7, but y'know...

LOL, inaccurate? how? There is nothing weird about the combat it works, has weight, gives the player lots of options and utility..I mean it is praised for a reason. Some of the best bow combat ever. You know analog is more accurate then motion controls right? It's why no one competitively would use motion controls.

You obviously don't know how it works on the games OP described. Motion is used there in addition to analog sticks. So you can make big movements/turning with the stick and use Motion to adjust accurately and quickly.

My big struggle switching was how restricted Horizon feels compared to Zelda. You can't really go anywhere or interact with much. The combat is also far more clunky in Horizon.

I tried to play Zelda on CEMU after ~200 hours on the Wii U and the lack of motion control aiming upset me.

Goodbye easy tracking of moving targets, headshots with barely a thought, accurate adjustment of fine aim on distant targets and shooting down lantern and platform ropes without breaking stride, hello fiddly stick nudging.

I'm glad I decided to postpone my first playthrough of BotW and went all in with Horizon when it came out. I enjoyed it, but wasn't absolutely blown away by it like some people were. At least I avoided the inevitable comparisons to Zelda if I had played it after BotW.

Nobody playing a competitive shooter would use analog sticks either . . .

Gyro+analogue aiming is just straight up better than analogue only aiming. It's not even a competition. Speed and accuracy both dramatically improve.

Love it in Zelda and Splatoon.

Head tracking aiming in RE7 is a revelation for me. I believe it's better if not on par with mouse.
The only downside compare to mouse is head tracking require bigger movement.

Or, and hear me out, maybe dual analog alone isn't very intuitive or comfortable for precision aiming for those who haven't been using it since its inception?

Like, maybe people feel better pointing and shooting with motion because almost everyone in the world has used a camera, which works almost exactly the same way?

And maybe dual analog is just a bad compromise for accurate aiming controls because accurate free-handed aiming tech didn't exist for cheap in the mid-90s?

...That's not the kind of motion controls OP is talking about.
This thread is about Gyro-assisted analog stick aiming. (Maybe call it like that so that people don't get hung up about Wii controls? I dunno.)

Weird world where people want motion controls in games.

I don't think I've ever thought it was ever implemented well.

I definitely not the only one who hate the joystick aiming, I never thought it was good and I can fully control it. That's why I barely play shoot game on console
So I appreciate the game with motion control aiming, the very first one I really like is OOT 3ds, at least it helps person like me

Aiming in Horizon is meant to be down in slow mo & focus.

You don't have it in the tutorial, but then they're like the first skills in the skill tree, get slowmo during jump & slide, and also "focus" (slowmo + more precise and zoomed in).

And that's how you'll play the whole game.

I know this thread isn't going to be about this though and everyone posting in here already has probably 3 different agendas to push, be it the superiority of Nintendo Switch as a platform in every aspect conceivable, how people who play shooter with sticks are idiots, how "motion controls" are always terrible even though this is the widest denomination ever conceived, or how zelda is better than horizon because apparently launching within the same week and having like 2 superficial things in common locks you into a neverending pissing contest or something.

Zelda does also have slow mo. Three superficial things in common?

But yeah, this thread sucks in an inevitable way
