Bright | Official Trailer (Netflix, Will Smith, Dec 22)

Looks like a dumb fantasy remake of alien nation but it could be kinda fun

In for Smith and Edgerton. And it being on Netflix makes this easier to take a chance on watching since it won't cost me anything

Pretty sure this was pretty heavily rewritten by Ayer. Landis was all about this movie right up until the first week of shooting and then he has never talked about it again. Premise is still very recognizably Landis's pitch though.

Max Landis helmed the recent Dirk Gently series and that was phenomenal.

Robert C Cooper is the showrunner, but it is technically "created by" Landis in that he had a take (and a good take TBH) on how to approach Adams' material that he and Cooper likely collaborated on as a series.

That's a good partnership, actually, because I feel a long-standing showrunner like Cooper, who built the entire Stargate franchise from one high-concept movie, can wrangle in a Landis high-concept idea and script because he's done it before.

I don't know if Ayer is at the level of knowing when to show restraint.

If true, that's pretty interesting since I remember Landis was VERY excited about Ayer and I believe that was part of why he sold it to Netflix over others.

Sold it for 3 million. o_O

Landis also wrote like 6 eps. so I think credit is due.

I read the first 50 pages of both, the differance weren't something I'd call heavily rewritten.

Wow all this time I thought Bobby Roberts was Max Landis

Max Landis is like Justin Roiland. He has crazy ideas that can work, but he needs a solid director/partner to reign him in.

My point is Landis isn't really "helming" anything as the previous post suggested, a Showrunner has full control and is the gatekeeper of what does and doesn't happen in a television series. Collaboration is probably key to why Landis' probably put out his best material with Dirk.

Oh, I was going to ask if this was based on something like a comic, but then I saw Max Landis and it all made sense.

I read his script "The Goodtime Gang" recently and if that ever gets made there are going to be hot takes until the death of the universe.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
Jesus, the guy does one dud of a movie, which was reported to have had a lot of studio interference, and he's suddenly a hack. This guy put out End of Watch!! At least give him more than 1 dud before you write him off completely.

Max Landis though, I have no excuse for him. Carry on.

I don't think either one is a hack or anything. Ayer is incredibly one note, but still made some solid pictures. He does his 90s era gangsters, and people still eat it up. He hasn't directed anything I'm in love with, but I've rarely regretted watching his films aside from Sabotage, Suicide Squad, and maybe Harsh Times. It's a question of restraint. I think both would just function better under a strong producer. Without that I could see a deadly cocktail of tone deafness, especially since this is an obvious race allegory.

Landis did Superman: American Alien, which I absolutely loved. But I still wouldn't say his material should just be plopped up on-screen unchecked. He isn't there yet, at least what I've read of his stuff.

This looks like the kind of thing that could turn out either really awesome, or really terrible. Like its not a concept that I think just plays out "just ok", its so far out there its either gonna stick the landing or fail miserably

I mean it looks cool but it seems like it would work better as a miniseries instead of a movie.

But I think that about a lot of stuff. And Will Smith ain't cheap.

Why the hell would they put 'from the director of Suicide Squad' in the trailer
It said Suicide Squad and I groaned, but then it said Fury and I said "Okay" and nodded, and then it said End of Watch and I was like "Fuck yeah, I'm in."
Sucks it's so far from coming out.

We should invite Max to get a GAF account.

Weren't you reading earlier?

"Bobby Roberts" is all an elaborate ruse. The face, the name, the voice - all that. Just some dude I've been hiring the past 10+ years. Playing a role to provide cover for the real me: Max Landis.

Ask me anything.
