It's 2017 Nintendo, why you can't you do basic online

Is not like is the first time launch of a big game crashes an online store/downloads in consoles. Even Xbox and PS4 has crashed, despite "getting the internets".

You're right, it's probably just a feature they haven't put into it yet because they rushed the online. Still, The idea that game launches crashing the store is nothing new in the gaming business, and Nintendo is not the lone offender of this. It sucks, but it's not "Iwata's greatest failing" sucks.

I can't recall any stores crashing due to too many people buying a game this generation.

Based on previous experiences, is the Eshop going to be down for that long?

No preload is a load of shit though.

Steam as well during sales.

Ignoring the voice chat mess for a minute, the OP is being a little ridiculous, have a coffee and try again a bit later

I wish any and all online games on switch flop terribly just so maybe Nintendo learn not to make such a shit effort for online.

Switch online with the app and friend codes is such a shit basket, journos should be requesting comment from Nintendo daily for specific issues.

Apparently, Paper Mario: Color Splash allowed people who preloaded to have the full game by September (game came out in October). I'm not surprised they shyed away from this system, though I wish it was back. Server stress is nothing new, though, somehow Nintendo is special for getting it wrong? I dunno, maybe I'm looking into it weird.

So? Because they fucked up once when implementing it then that means that they should stop it completely because of their deserved worry? I think that we as consumers should probably demand a bit more than that.

And we're not taking about other companies now, so I'm not sure why you keep bringing them up. They rightfully deserve and get flak when they mess up. This is about Nintendo and the current situation.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
The Eshops down and people cant download Splatoon 2 because Switch doesnt support preload?

lol

I do not believe they have the right personnel to run their infrastructure teams. They are border line incompetent.

Well those 3 online options also offer preloading l, something the Wii U and 3ds also have. Preloading should have been day one on eshop, no excuses. I mean it's a 3 GB download for fucks sake...

Thought I had an example...none come to mind. Whether or not this is because of my sleep addled mind or not, I conceed.

As I said in an earlier reply, I made a mistake, it's likely a feature they didn't add to the system because they rushed the online, and will add it later.

You're right, I'm acting dumb. Apologizes.

I finally got it to purchase. Only reached the purcahse screen once, it crashed when I clicked purchase.

Didn't stop Nintendo from charging my credit card 4 times, WTF? I don't buy digitally from Nintendo often but thought I'd give it a shot for Splatoon. This is crazy. Going to get an angry phone call from me tomorrow

Is this the usual gaf overreaction thread because according to the posters here Steam is behind the times.

A meme from 2008, for an online service that acts like it's 2008. Bravo sir.

Is it Nintendo of America or Nintendo of Japan that runs infrastructure including the eShop and online services? I wonder if there's still a major disconnect between them that is the root issue for this mess and all the mess of online services.

Honestly, thinking about it - Nintendo's never really had much reason to amp up their online infrastructure. They don't see themselves as a direct competitor to Sony and Microsoft, instead believing the value of their first party games will be what drives the sales of their systems. Quite frankly, they're right, and I think at least the sentiment that Nintendo systems offer a different experience is generally agreed upon here.

This begs the question - if Nintendo's online infrastructure isn't up to snuff, how many customers do they actually lose? If PSN was this level of crap, many potential buyers might buy an Xbox One instead. But when there's no real equivalent alternative, as you could argue the case is with the Switch, do the customers still turn away? Or do they just deal with it in order to get the software that attracted them to the system in the first place? Not that this justifies the situation, but it's interesting to think about.

Oh, and about how Nintendo used to have pre-loading - I don't think they've done that since the Color Splash incident where it was playable early. I know BotW didn't have it, have any 3DS games had it since?

or you know, this shit happens when a massive demand occurs (aside from my Steam example, see Amazon Japan dying)

feels like you folks are correlating the shitty mic chat to something irrelevant like this network deal

Also 3ds could preload too, Switch just doesn't have it yet.

There's a reason everyone's talking about preloading, you know... I'm not saying it still wouldn't have crashed, but it could've allowed you to avoid it if you desired. I know how server stress works.

My commentary was on this as well, yes. Intentionally, based on the more general thread title.

That doesn't at all answer my question.

Not only did Nintendo amaze the gaming community with an incredibly elegant voice chat solution this week but they have also found another way to remind us they can't provide basic online functionality.

The Nintendo eshop has crashed and people are unable to download Splatoon 2 at release. Wouldn't be a problem if preload on the Switch was a thing, right? lol sure thing buddy.

Does Nintendo just not care about providing a functional online ecosystem for its fans? Do they figure people will buy their games anyway? There is no way that Nintendo management can think what we have right now is suitable so I am struggling to figure out why don't have something that at least reaches parity with Xbox Live when it was released in 2002.

It's been 15 years since MS showed us what a proper online infrastructure should be on a console. 15 years. 15. 1 5

Nintendo can do basic online. It had basic online on Switch before this app.

Online services crashing due to load isn't Nintendo being stupid. It happens to everyone when a massive thing comes out. It has happened on Playstation and Xbox servers many times.

Next question.

The CRAZIEST thing is some features are better implemented on the Wii u?

i guess valve cant do it either since their servers always crash during steam sales

Steam as well during sales.

Wait, for real? People never seen shit like Steam going down due to sales?

The OP is a bit hyperbolic, understandably so though if you ever really wanted to play a game and you put yourself in a gamer's shoes and not in a corporate defender one.

But this excuse is even more ridiculous. Do you even acknowledge the difference in traffic between Steam sales and the potential network traffic for eshop? Whataboutism is pretty stupid anyhow, but when it's not even on the same scale it's completely ridiculous.

Edit: not to mention that they could have reduced the traffic peak by allowing the game to be preloaded.

The massive traffic of Splatoon 2 launch...ok. Given the usual digital to phsyical sales ratio on Nintendo games, and the fact that there aren't even that many people with a Switch to even download this thing, their servers shouldn't be breaking down.

Because the same idiots who thought friend codes were amazing are still up there. It's great that we've gotten some new blood on the creative side of things, but can we just shuffle out whoever handles the online side of things?

At least consumers have a direct way of telling Nintendo to fuck off by not buying the online subscription... right?

The point is preload is a thing that exists. You can't preload steam sales games lol.
And there are like 3M switches in the wild, there are 10M+ people accessing steam during a sale, it's not comparable.

I started the Splatoon 2 download an hour ago. Currently at 0%!

How odd.

I started it an hour ago.

It finished 40 minutes ago

It doesn't quite work like that

Complaints everywhere on the internet regarding their shit online solution and infrastructure.

Yet you so keep buying into their products and yet the only way Nintendo will ever learn is to stop buying their products.

They get such a by ball from the gaming community.
