What's the GAF consensus on Kong Skull Island? I watched it last night and was thoroughly entertained by it. The creature designs were cool as heck. Thought it was far better than Godzilla. Not sure if that's just me.
I enjoyed the hell out of Kong. I think it executed what it was trying to do better than Godzilla 2014. Kong felt like a modern take on the old-school B monster movies. I can't wait to buy it on Blu-Ray. It was just a really fun monster movie!

So do you guys think they'll keep all the iconic kaiju noises, like King Ghidorah's dopey dolphin giggling?

I hope so. I want the Showa roar pretty bad.

There were some cringeworthy moments and some incredibly stupid decisions by the human characters. Don't fly away from the giant monster that is systematically taking down every helicopter. No, don't do that. The Sam Jackson character is wonderfully stupid as well.

But it's Godzilla and King Kong movies. They're supposed to be stupid. That's the whole point. If all you can do is roll eyes, then you probably don't get it. Campy seems to be a lost art better suited in the 60's.

Your critique cracks me up. If I'm flying into an island and encounter a giant Ape I wouldn't know what the fuck to do. Shit happened so fast you don't have time to even rationalize the situation.

In for a 90s set Skull Island sequel. Though I imagine we won't be getting an actual movie of that since the vs movie is set in the present day? Meaning they'll probably skip over all of that.

If I encountered a giant ape my first instinct would be to run away. Or at least back off and shoot it at a distance. But no, let's fly around like stupid idiots and stay within grabbing range. There was like 15 helicopters. Every one of them got owned.

I still liked the movie. I kinda expect stupid irrational stuff and super skilled monsters from a Godzilla type movie. Put them in a modern movie with quality CGI and I'm happy. I thought the bad guy monster was pretty impressive and they have an epic battle. You da boss Kong.

Its a movie.

Even if they make Kong as big as Goji, he's still not as worthy as Ghidorah as a "final antagonist". It's ridiculous that they're leading with Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah into Kong. Kong is gonna feel like a huge step down.

well not really...yet

It'll end with Godzilla and Kong teaming up to take out an even bigger monster. There's no way it won't :lol

Same here, it was way better than Godzilla which had a transformers more about the humans thing going on. Kong was more about the island itself full of giant monsters which I loved. Lots of characters but we never found out enough about them to upstage the monsters. Hopefully this sequel keeps that lesson going.

Biggest disappointment will be the lack of Ms. Jing Tian but not like she had a big role either way, and only like 3 lines. But hey im all for more forced in big name chinese stars in my hollywood action movies.

I've always thought Rodan and Mothra were pretty boring, I'd like to have seen some more obscure monsters like Manda, Gigan or Biollante.

And Kong and Godzilla are definitely going to fight MechaG at the end.

That's not a Transformers thing. That's a Godzilla thing; Gojira and Shin were more about the people and their struggles against Godzilla. Of course Godzilla 14 was more of a bait and switch since it also wanted to do the giant monsters fight stuff

This is not even a thing only about these two movies. Basicly every Godzilla movie revolves first and foremost about the humans.

Most of the Japanese films pace the Godzilla footage much better than Godzilla 2014 though. In 2014 they cut away from the Muto attacking Godzilla in Hawaii as well as the Muto attacking Las Vegas. In the Japanese films we would of gotten at least a few minutes of monster footage in those scenes (and we really should have in Godzilla 2014).

True

To be fair I didn't care about thew humans in Shin Godzilla. Not enouh character developement for that...But I wanted everyone in Godzilla 2014 to die, I don't know what's better.

I get that but he was throwing trees and other helicopters around. Not sure how you regroup that fast with choppers. Dunno?

Also, these people just meet a ape that is as tall as a mountain. I know internet board people are the toughest guys in the world who wont be surprised by anything, but no military group in the world will just regroup when they stumble onto a island with a mountain sized ape.

Not to mention he's not a stationary object. Without having a game plan going in it's indefensible. One step and swat and you're fucked.

Kong can likely run faster than any helicopter can fly anyway. His legs are about 50 feet long and hundreds of tons of solid muscle.

Fun fact - in real life you would probably shit yourself and be frozen solid.

Its always funny/annoying when you get comments like "I would have done things differently cause im smart and this films stupid".

How do you know? Have you ever been flying a helicopter only to suddenly have a building size ape throw a three through your colleagues faces making them explode?

Its like watching someone jump out and scare someone and saying "it didnt scare me, i would have been fine" when you have the knowledge of the action happening and the reassurance of knowing its a fake.

Kong certainly has entertaining moments but the direction is far more worse than G14. Both of the Legendary flicks so far have just been pretty mediocre. Thank God for Shin Godzilla, easily the best Godzilla film in decades.

I like it. I wasn't expecting much. It's summer blockbuster with enough interesting parts (great visuals) to keep you entertained

Because from a filmmaking perspective it has more in common with Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad than any previous Godzilla or Kong film

But somehow dumber and more inept than both those films.

(It's been a thing in this week's B.O. thread, if you'd like to know more.)

I don't hate it with a passion or whatever. It's just shitty. Real shitty.

Edit: if they're keeping/augmenting the skreeonk, (and they did) they'll keep Ghidora's sound effects, I'd imagine. They'll just juice it up a lil like they did Godzilla's

I dunno, it Skull Island was dumb but it was dumb in ways that made sense to me - which puts it above garbage like BvS or SS. And Skull Island didn't do any of the cockteasing like Godzilla 2014 did, plus had better characters.

I seen Godzilla in IMAX and the scale and sound was incredible stuff.

Same and it was incredible. I have to say the set pieces were better in Godzilla then Kong.

The scope and scale in Godzilla was pretty damn awesome.

Love the timeline btw.

Guess we know another movie in the MonsterVerse

Think that's referencing the current comic book series.

But yeah, there's a cool reference to Monster Zero in the timeline so that's cool. I still don't get how people compare this series to the Showa films. So far they're barely alike.

This is like my third time saying it, but G14's set pieces were incredible. Far better than Kongs. Mothra's design looks alright. Doesn't look as fantasical as the originals but that's fine. It's close enough.
