Does 5.5.2 break anything?

AFAIK, the browser is fixed, meaning no online exploits. But it seems that Haxchi and Coldboot Haxchi (CBHC) are left intact.

Honestly, after a year and a half, if you were still using the browser and didn't switch to at least regular Haxchi, it's your own fault :/

Would anyone like to take over the OP? I haven't been part of this scene for ages now, have no idea what's up to date, and don't really have time. :\

There haven't been many new developments since the release of CBHC, to be honest. If you give it a few days until things become a bit clearer after 5.5.2, to see what is broken and what remains active, I'll make a short summary you can put in the OP if you want.

N3DS offline updates stub the browser. I suspect the same is true of the Wii U.

3DS updates are weird, though. The firmware is separated into two groups of titles, only one of which is included on the update partition of carts. That's why there's two separate version numbers (the first 3 numbers are the core OS and represent what's included on carts, the fourth number after the dash represents the auxiliary apps only available online). The Internet Browser is in the online only group.

Wii U doesn't do the segmented updates thing, so the browser is most likely actually on the disc.

They started stubbing (ie replacing with non-functional placeholders that tell you to update) the online title set late in the cart updates (around 10ish?) IIRC because people
were using that method to upgrade while keeping a hackable browser.

I'd be surprised if they didn't do the same with WiiU on disc updates at the same time..

Weirdly last I checked they aren't stubbed on factory N3DSs though, which is incomprehensible.

I actually upgraded to CBHC like three weeks ago, so I'm good. It's just a few friends that were still using the browser.

Sorry, I wasn't talking specifically about you. It's just that I've seen at least 4 or 5 people across different forums complaining about this update and how they "didn't have time" to upgrade to Haxchi :/

Can I mod into Haxchi on 5.3.2? And if so once I have it to installed I can update to 5.5.2?

I think that as long as you have access to a browser exploit, you can install Haxchi. Check out this guide. Once you have Haxchi or Coldboot Haxchi (CBHC) installed, 5.5.2 doesn't block it. The only thing it blocks is the browser exploit, which is needed to install Haxchi.

That being said... it's a been a year and a half since the last update *shrug*

Is there a preferred SD card? I want to make sure I'm getting the right one.

Eh, I'd be really surprised if they went through the effort to do all that instead of just updating the browser to the version on the disc on Wii U. I kinda think the only reason they bothered with that on 3DS is because they already had to specially package all the cart versions of the system updates anyway due to the bifurcated update system.

Regardless, such an approach is not going to fly on Switch, since the browser is too essential an OS component to stub out.

Is there a place I can download the latest Smash update?

EDIT: Eh whatever, just created a new connection without the DNS, downloaded then switched back.

Swap DRC, a homebrew app that allows you to play any game on your gamepad, has been released.

Is CBHC still dodgy to install and use? Or has the process become more safe?

It probably hasn't changed at all. Which is to say verify Haxchi works first , install over it, and don't do anything with the injected game afterwards, don't move it or delete or look at it funny.

Given that it's currently unrecoverable if you lose Haxchi, I'd probably recommend having 2 injectable games, one for Haxchi as a backup and one for CBHC.

So I purchased a copy of Skylanders Imaginators to update to firmware 5.5.1 and then installed Haxchi last night. Can anyone recommend me some good stuff to install? Also is there anything to make the Pro controller work with every game? I really loathe the gamepad.

There's nothing I really want to play anymore on my Wii U with the browser exploit, and Wii U emulation is coming along pretty good, but I'm still sour about it auto-updating to 5.5.2. I had never even heard of Haxchi before now, so I'm guessing it'll be too late to install it, unless a new exploit comes along.

If you're still on 5.5.1 and can access the internet you can install Haxchi using the Browser update and then keep it after updating to 5.5.2

I'm on 5.5.1 so basically it's now or never to hack this thing.... maybe I'd better jump in.

I just want to avoid them getting clever about banning hacked consoles like they did on 3DS. Any precautions to stay safe in this way?

if you're paranoid don't use homebrew apps from the menu (load them with Haxchi or CBHC instead) and don't use TCPgecko. However, with that said I doubt they would do anything in terms of bans on Wii U at this point. The only bans reported right now are from cheating online and they're game specific. No console wide or NNID bans yet.You can load HBL from CBHC in it's startup menu but I'm not sure how that works with plain Haxchi. You also won't get banned from running Haxchi as the system reports it as a DS game so no worries in regards to loading that. You can also hack the Wii portion of the Wii U with this if you like if you haven't already with WUPhax.

To be fair most people basically stop looking for exploits after some time with the browser one because of how simple it was.

So I can see people going back with the extra knowledge and finding a new exploit soon

HID to Vpad makes most usb controllers connected to the console be used as the gamepad. Mouse and Keyboard/PS3/PS4 controller included

Nope. It's 5.5.2 now and I tried to the browser exploit with no luck. Sucks, but again, I haven't played my Wii U since March and there's not really anything I'd want to play on it now anyway. It'll be more likely that Wii U emulation will get to a good place before I find something I want to try again.

Oops nope. It looks like my Wii U automatically updated to 5.5.2 :/

I seem to remember blocking DNS settings or whatever on it too.

Here's hoping for future exploits :/

It's also possible that all the people leading the scene have moved on.

Is it too late for me to install haxchi? I am still on 5.5.1, but I never bought a DS game on the eShop for the WiiU and now when I tried to go there after putting in the update blockers I get a constant "error code 105-4206" about a 'server maintenance'.

Nope. You do the browser exploit to get to the homebrew launcher which will allow you to use a spoofer that'll let you get on the eshop on lower firmware and buy a game.

Follow this guide: https://wiiu.guide/get-started

Assuming brain academy or whatever is still the cheapest exploitable game for haxchi, right? They didn't fix it later or anything like Sony did for some PSP games?

Caught my sneaky WiiU trying to update to 5.5.2... put an end to that shit right away and finally followed through with the homebrew. I think everything is in order. Just gonna go through the instructions again to see if I'm missing anything...

Did I miss something? Why would Nintendo release an update now? The hack's been around forever and the WiiU is long dead
