I'm the one approaching this from a sane and reasonable place.

...You're arguing that it's irrational to be alarmed about tomorrow's vote because Senators don't even know what's in the bill, as if that will matter in the end.

I mean, really. House Republicans literally passed a bill cobbled together at the last second before a CBO report even released. This literally happened like two months ago

The people alarmed are the people paying attention.

Chuck Todd will talk about the MTP on MTP. Tee-hee.

I have no clue what to think. I hope that balladofwindwishes has it right and they've only hauled McCain there to have any chance at passing the MTP - an act of desperation, not of confidence.

While I'm not saying that there's no reason to be alarmed, the reasons that the house was able to pass a bill that was cobbled together last minute aren't really applicable to the situation in the senate right now.

Of course this is an act of desperation. You don't haul in a dying man for his vote if you're confident.

I don't know about that. Senator appeals to "please just vote yes to MTP so we can have a debate! Oh and don't worry about all the bad shit in the bill, they'll be so far off they won't actually happen!" sounds a lot like the passing the buck House Republicans did to pass their version of the bill

They were trying to grab your prize. They work for the mercenary. The masked man.
His use of "Amazon Washington Post" is honestly one of his stranger attempts at a burn.

This line of thinking is what lead to the initial coup against McConnell. Every time McConnell gains a moderate, he loses a fringe member and vice-versa. There's no closing the gap (thank God)

His use of "Amazon Washington Post" is honestly one of his stranger attempts at a burn.

What triggered it this time? Is it just general anger regarding the sanctions bill and coverage of the closing of the CIA/Syria weapons program, or does WaPo have another big oppo incoming?

Edit: NM, it's just the former. Twitter was getting my hopes up for the latter.

Cool that Donald Trump confirmed the existence of a covert CIA program on Twitter...

I just don't know anymore.

In what world is dragging McCain from his hospital bed a sign of confidence? Collins and Murkowski are still voting no. Paul is probably voting no. And then there are 5-6 more who are waffling.

It's not intended to be a burn, it's intended to be a threat that he'll use antitrust to attack Amazon and break it up unless they sell the Washington Post.

It's a pretty standard dictatorship move.

Amazon doesn't own the Washington Post. Bezos does.

One can say that, but I personally wouldn't put money on it either way.

Putting it to the floor and having a POW traveling across the country whilst ill is an attempt to guilt the fencers into bending.

I can imagine Paul cracking with a bill on the floor. Murkowski and Collins will get to vote no.

I see it passing at this point. I don't have faith in Rand not waffling with the bill on the floor and others being pressured by the stunt they are pulling.

"I want to vote no but gosh darn it if McCain is such a fighter I can fight for this bill too! Plus I wouldn't want to make a dying man's trip pointless"

That would be the fear I think. The GOP is off its rocker so who knows what is happening. I'm going to call tomorrow morning and yell at my Senator.

What it he looks really pitiful with bandages and shit? The "liberal" media will have a field day showing this hero who just happens to have a different opinion. #bothsides

I hate that you're right. I really fucking hate it. And if he were to die on the way over, the GOP would probably just turn him into a martyr and claim that they have to pass the bill, because otherwise he died in vain.

And then Schumer will say, "While I don't agree with the conclusion he reached today, I praise Senator John McCain for having the fortitude to battle this disease and return to Washington to do his job."

This is insane/almost hilariously ridiculous.

https://www.axios.com/the-senates-evolving-health-care-plan-2464948865.html

The details of the Senate GOP plan are beginning to emerge, although everyone is still pretty confused. But the gist is that if Republicans have the 50 votes necessary to get on the bill, they'll vote on both the replacement plan they've been working on and their partial repeal plan — both of which are expected to fail — and then have to trust McConnell for whatever comes next.

The plan, according to two senior GOP Senate aides:

Take the vote on the motion to proceed, which would begin debate on the House-passed bill. It's unclear whether this has 50 votes. If it doesn't, this is where the plan ends.
If the motion to proceed passes, vote on the Better Care Reconciliation Act — the leading replacement plan.

Here's where things get murky: Sen. Rob Portman has struck a deal that would add $100 billion to the bill's stabilization fund. It would pair with Sen. Cruz's consumer-freedom amendment, which allows insurers selling ACA-compliant plans to also sell non-compliant plans. But a vote on that agreement would be subject to a 60-vote threshold because it hasn't been analyzed by the Congressional Budget Office. That means it'll fail.

Then would come the vote on an updated version of 2015 straight-repeal bill. This is also expected to fail. (The way leadership is structuring the vote procedurally, this would technically be the first amendment voted on — likely as a nod to Sen. Rand Paul — even though BCRA would be on the table first.)

If votes on the 2015 bill and BCRA both fail, all votes are to amend the House bill. It's unclear what these votes will be, but Democrats are sure to make Republicans take some painful ones.

No one knows what the final bill will be, "because we don't have a product that 50 senators agree to," one of aides said.
No one will see a final product before the vote on the motion to proceed tomorrow, unless something is being drafted overnight, the aide added. "This is a leap of faith in [Majority Leader Mitch [McConnell. We have no idea what the final product will be."

The second aide added that "the ultimate goal is to get to conference where there would be more time to work out some of the issues and get scores on these items."
But things are in flux. "Everybody is kind of all over the place on what they think they've heard as far as procedure and ordering of amendments," the second aide said. "It's like we all agree that Portman, Cruz, and repeal all get votes, but the process has everybody scratching their heads."

As crazy as it is, it's their only play. And I think there is a non zero chance they say fuck it and bring out the kegs of beer just like the house did.

Murkowski and Collins will stay no, everyone else will crack or get some small amendment they want added into and claim victory.
