Mighty No.9 Backers are starting to receive the physical edition and oh boy...

I know this game was a shitshow but game boxes are nothing new for Kickstarter projects

I got a PS2 style case for Amplitude (that doesn't come with the game) and also one for The Long Dark.

It's not 'shady' wording, people just really love finding something to hate on with this game. And no I didn't back MN9 and I have no horse in this race.

I know what I backed. People just didn't read it.

I thought that was capcom after charging per outfit on sfv and selling us the beta at full retail. At least inafune tried. Capcoms sting still hurts more.
Capcom tried too. There are things called updates and the ability to buy the outfits using the in-game currency which I've been told is actually pretty easy to get.

If Inafune tried then he didn't try hard enough. Yes Capcom did cancel Mega Man Legends 3 and that's something that many Mega Man fans will not forget nor forgive, but Mighty No.9 was supposed to be THE answer to Capcom's blunder. But what happened? It became a laughingstock.

Again, this is literally not news or anything to be outraged about. The person who backed the game got a digital copy of the game for $20 and paid extra for a physical retro style game box. I don't even know why they were expecting a physical copy of the game when that didn't even exist yet. If anything this thread should serve as a highlight to the embarrassment of the person on twitter who had almost four years to read a small amount of text that listed what they were getting twice. If you checked for more details (like it asked you to do) you would've seen this:

I am unsure how this could be misconstrued. Did they think they would be getting a Famicom or NES copy of the game? Did they think they would get a physical Japanese PS3 version or something? Also to those complaining that you have to assemble the box, what did you even want? An assembled game box that would arrive crushed? Seriously.

The only thing embarrassing about the physical box is that the manual cannot fit inside of it, how long it took to arrive, and the game associated with it.

I knew it was an empty box.

I did not know it would remain an empty box because the fucking manual won't fit inside the box.

I completely get the box being flat and empty. That's understandable. I've had too many experiences with bent and damaged boxes of CEs. The manual not fitting the box is the mess up. A big mess up.
When I found out about that I got upset. I love Half Genie Hero, but full voice acting would've been awesome.
There was going to be cutscenes too....

Exactly this.

At least I'll have the USB drives that I purchased as add-on's to put in these boxes, assuming they're correctly-sized and all that.

Preach!

As a $60 backer I've known my pledge was for an empty box from day one. The manual thing indeed is an embarrassment tho.

The thing you just posted stated clearly that the manual will ship inside the box. Not only does that imply the box will ship complete (not flat-packed), but that the manual will fit in the box. And you brought up how long it took to arrive. So why are you saying that the guy had nothing to complain about? You also assume he got a code. A friend of mine backed at the download code level, never got his.

As for “a game box that would arrive crushed”, I’ve bought NES game boxes from eBay, they’ve never arrived crushed. There’s this new technology called “packing”, it’s all the rage! :p

Bullshit they had actual footage that was comparable to what was released before the kickstarter ended. That was always called a mockup.
Their visualisation test took 7 days to create in Unreal Engine according to that video. And it looks fine. It's not hard to understand why people would expect the final product to have a similar quality of graphics and not a gigantic downgrade years later.

It's fine when the final product doesn't quite match an earlier mockup, but in this case, it doesn't look like they even tried.

That still irks me. I really Shantae met all of its goals. It made all but the last three. Even though Mighty No.9 did help a bit when the cross promotion happened, I still sometimes wish that some of the money that Mighty No.9 made had gone to Shantae instead.

But I'm just a bitter old fool.

Yeah some of those goals were pretty neat too. Like the full voice acting one? Shantae was a damn good game tho

I just don't understand. This game had an insane amount of money pledged to it.. and you compare it something like Shantae that didn't even have a slice of the funds MN9 had.

The problem is money does not equal competence. I have worked on very well funded projects which failed spectacularly because of bad senior management, inept employees, poor project management, bad technical decisions, infighting, etc. I have also worked on teams which succeeded with relatively small budgets.

Basically, well funded projects have a lot more options than regular projects but it doesn't mean that the project's leaders will make wise decisions or won't spend the money on the wrong things. For example, Daikatana (http://www.ign.com/games/daikatana/ps-2040) was lavishly funded (for a 1997-2000 game) and it was probably a terrible game (I didn't play it but it was universally panned).

Of course! I still think all of that is insane considering the scope of the game and what it is. It's not like a No Man's Sky affair.

Heck yeah it was!

Still, it would have been nice if it had met all of its stretch goals. Oh well, maybe one day they'll just say whatever and add those missing goals into the game using their own funds.

Which reminds me that I should be getting news about the backer rewards for Half-Genie Hero in August.

While having to assemble the box yourself is definitely kinda weird, it is smart in the sense that it's flat and less likely to get damaged during shipping.

That's a big problem for Collector's Editions, etc. even coming from Amazon. And the returns and reshipping fees are VERY costly for crowdfunding fulfillment, since you're on a fixed income.

That said, the manual not fitting in the box doesn't make any sense at all.

I can't wait to play risky mode myself. Base game was a lot of fun.

So if you backed this tier, you got a digital edition only or did you get a physical version at some point as well?

Physical version of the game didn't even exist at this point. At least the idea of it. It's only much after the game got funded that Deep Silver stepped in and acquired publishing rights.

Alright so lets break down your nonsensical complaints.

The thing you just posted stated clearly that the manual will ship inside the box.
You're right! But no one is complaining about that and ultimately not something that really matters. Or the point of of me posting that picture. All in all just a petty complaint that distracts from the main point, which is that the person backing the game should have clearly known what they were getting.

And you brought up how long it took to arrive. So why are you saying that the guy had nothing to complain about?

Well, firstly, I did not say the guy had nothing to complain about. And as you said listed the length of time for delivery, among other things, as an embarrassment. Purchasing a empty game box without realizing it and complaining is a petty thing to do.

You also assume he got a code. A friend of mine backed at the download code level, never got his.

Sounds like your friend either didn't back the game or didn't contact Comcept or Fangamer when he didn't receive one (I don't blame him either). Either way, there is zero reason to assume that the person in question did not get a digital copy of the game.

As for “a game box that would arrive crushed”, I’ve bought NES game boxes from eBay, they’ve never arrived crushed. There’s this new technology called “packing”, it’s all the rage! :p

I would like to sincerely apologize to you. After reading this portion I have come to the conclusion that the reason this is seemingly such an important issue to you is that you have bamboozled time after time again thinking you were building a massive NES collection for pennies on the dollar. I hope you have grown to accept and love your NES box collection.

Oh! I would also like to congratulate you for never having received a damage item/package ever. Really, that's quite amazing. Even large retailers such as Amazon have people consistently complaining about damaged goods. Or from smaller sellers like those on eBay. Really it comes down to who handles your mail and assembling a cardboard box to send in the mail seems like an unnecessary gamble. Going by the tweet it seems like the item came inside an envelope too, unless they got something else.

Personally I am still waiting on my physical goodies and have no doubt that my order will be bungled in some way due to what I actually ordered when I backed. But until then I'm going to wait while this dumpsterfire burns.

Digital only. The physical version wasn't a thing until long after the Kickstarter campaign ended.

Oh okay. So this is basically only for display purposes then... with a manual that doesn't fit. What a cruel joke.

Kickstarter...not even once.

Don't place MN9's failure as something being wrong with crowdfunding. Lots of great games have come out because they got funding through kickstarter, lots still being worked on with active updates.

If anything always do research on what you're giving up your money for, and never give more than you could stand to waste if the project turns into a dumpster fire.

Capcom tried too. There are things called updates and the ability to buy the outfits using the in-game currency which I've been told is actually pretty easy to get.

Are Trump pictures acceptable? Because this is one of the few times where him saying WRONG is acceptable.

ALL premium costumes can only be purchased with real money. The only costumes that are purchasable with fight money are the story costumes.

And those "updates" are made in such a way that the amount of fight money you get isn't anywhere near feasible to get a decent amount of stuff. And I've grinded damn near a million of that shit.

Sooooo we're just going to ignore all the incredible games that have come from Kickstarter then? Not gonna help make any more stuff on the levels of FTL, Superhot, Banner Saga, Divinity OS, Volgarr, Wasteland 2, Shovel Knight, Hyper Light Drifter, etc...just because Inafune bungled his? Sure, yeah, that makes sense.

That mentality...not even once.

Not to mention that the Pillars of Eternity kickstarter saved Obsidian since they were about to go out of business.

Oh right this is a thing. I'm supposed to receive mine as well. I never changed my email with them so I missed any updates they might have did, so I might not even receive mine I think. Oh well, not gonna bother with it at any rate.

...sigh...how did I know that's what your takeaway from that post would be...

I never said MN9 was the only bad thing from KS. Of course it isn't. I'm saying it's really not a good idea to write off the entirety of Kickstarter [!] because this one obviously-mismanaged project turned out badly. There were, are, and will continue to be awesome projects to back on KS, and telling the good ones from the bad ain't rocket science.
