Can some please make a good argument for Amiibo spoofing devices not being piracy? I just bought one and I'm feeling a bit conflicted.
Ahh okay. iPhones have NFC don't they? Or is that locked to card payments?
I only have Megaman because he is amazing, so I haven't done much besides dressing up my Mii as Megaman. I got a kick out of transferring my Mii data between Wii U and Switch so there's that I guess. Maybe it'd be annoying with DLC but I kind of get a kick out of the process tbh.
It's like the shittest DLC of all time.
They aren't piracy in the same way GAF justifies emulators as not being piracy. It's just a tool, maybe all you're doing is loading on the amiibo you only own, for convenience. Yeah, that's the ticket.
The second you load one you don't own on there, yes, you are pirating content.
Locking content behind a physical, hard-to-find object is not only not fun, it's worse than DLC in every way possible.

I don't object to this, but let me also buy the skin as DLC. What is the harm? Why lock it behind a physical item?
But how can you love not having access to content by any other means? I'm not saying to get rid of amiibo. I'm saying let me buy content digitally.
If Nintendo actually sold, say, the 20 MK8 amiibo costumes for $.99 each like people suggest, I guarantee everyone would flip their shit at the prospect of having to pay an extra $20 to get the "complete" experience (even though it's far cheaper than paying $260 for all the amiibo).

You don't have a way to preserve/transfer your Amiibo DLCs once you sold it. Those unlocks are stuck in your Switch or behind a N.O. paywall. An online account that host your DLC seems more reliable than a figure.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHABrad Shoemaker disagrees:
There isn't one. It's about as clear cut as pirating digital content can get. Unless you're buying the amiibo and just not opening them or something.
That also doesn't mean it's morally wrong, because the fact that for a lot of amiibo, limited stock and poor handling of the entire situation from Nintendo basically ensures if you want a thing you need to be ready to bend over to a scalper.
I guess no one cares about piracy if it's about amiibo...
Guess we'll see people giving links to r4s and other devices soon enough.
I like them because it's DLC you buy once and use in separate games. Problem is that they kinda of things they unlock are really minor. But if they were more substantial, the GAF threads crying about them would be twice as long.
It really isn't though. There's not a single piece of Amiibo DLC that makes you feel "left out" of anything. All the DLC it unlocks is something I'd pay $.99 for digitally. Which is crazy Nintendo doesn't just charge you $X.XX to unlock stuff.
The Shovel Knight co-op mode was added in to all home versions. The Custom Knight extra moves were nothing special.
The Mega Man Legacy Collection extra missions were also nothing special, just buster only challenges.
Is Amiibo spoofing actually illegal? Are the NFC codes copy-written? I had heard that they were not.
As pointed out before, this logic falters when they keep making new Amiibos for characters/series with existing figures and tying exclusive content to the new ones.I like them because it's DLC you buy once and use in separate games. But isn't the content already there?
It's a bit weak because you can't really claim to 'need' OG Zelda costume DLC I suppose.
That's not the business model for Amiibo, that's why.
I am a big fan of the Amiiqo.
It allows me to use my amiibo's without having to keep a pile of them in my living room. Also makes life much easier when traveling.
I agree OP. This is why people are just making their own.
You can make your own or buy handmade ones online easily. Much simpler to store if they're cards, and no where near as expensive. Don't have to have the reader/writer required for amiiqo either. And no hassle of having to rewrite every time.
Some really cheap tags available for anything. I don't like the flimsy stuff though. My buddy prints them on the pvc stock you see here then laminates then. NFC chip is inside the stock in this case. Most people just add an NFC sticker to a card for the same effect, albeit less durability.

Nobody has the patience to stalk websites for figurines when they can easily spoof it and it has saved me tons of money in Mario Kart and Splatoon.
It has saved you tons of money because you are literally stealing the content.
Pretty sure GAF is no-nonsense when it comes to active admissions of piracy?
Pretty shitty. Now why am I doing the same thing in 2017?Imagine how it felt when you had to connect a Game Boy Advance to a GameCube with a pricey GBA-GameCube Link Cable, then stick in a pricey Card Reader into your GBA, and then scan cards purchased separately, which would ultimately unlock some trivial stuff in your GameCube game.
Whether the data is physically on your disc or in an electronic store isn't really relevant, you didn't pay for it. Some things are stored locally vs remotely for the sake of execution convenience, but it doesn't entitle you to it.
Exactly, you aren't owed the content. Sometimes in the real world, things are sold out, and you can't get them. That doesn't give you the right to break into a warehouse and steal stock. "How else was I gonna get it???" Well, you're just not.
I didn't know about this. The picture of someone sitting there with all their voice chat and phone app connectors as well as a pile of amiibo is kind of hilarious.I'm more annoyed about having to use them to access basic functionality. Fucking can't store loadouts in splatoon 2 without them, and they are an inconvenient as fuck way of swapping between loadouts compared to just having a damn list to select.
Also locked behind a proprietary add-on for the majority of 3DS owners. The comparison to the GameCube game link cable isn't far off.I'm in the same boat. It's so fucking dumb. I own maybe 10 Amiibo.
Its like the equivalent of horse armor except it's already on the disc, costs over 10x as much, and is locked behind a physical object.
Only Nintendo could do something this heinous and be praised for it instead of ridiculed.
