Persona 5 Ships 1.8 Million Worldwide

Still can't decide whether to play this or not.

I have time for maybe one big JRPG this year, and I'm torn between this or waiting for Xenoblade Chronicles 2, or alternatively spending those hours playing though Chrono Trigger and FFVI.

My only JRPG experience is from P4:Golden and FFX.

Perfect place to start (or in your case continue from P4). Jump in!

Yes amazing! If you put down all those shipped copies next to each other, you'd have enough to fill almost 6 soccer/football fields.

Awesome! I loved the game, even if it took me two months (had to take a break) to beat it. I do hope however that if a "Crimson" edition is made they cut some of the padding, the game is sooooooo much longer than the previous games when it did not need to be.

I felt the opposite about this game. P4 took me about 100hrs to complete, but I did P5 in about 78 and I never felt like I was rushing. I want more actual content to be added.

Awesome to hear, game was a ton of fun and really enjoyed playing through it! Hope Persona 6 takes a bit quicker to come out using the same engine like what they did from Persona 3 to 4... cause 5 sure took awhile to come out and I need more Personas!

2M lifetime should be a given then, never expected to see an Atlus RPG selling so much. Absolutely deserved and hopefully it can reach even more lifetime(2.5?). Curious to see whether or not Studio Zero's new IP can measure up to that, and how SMT HD will perform in comparison.

Pretty good game - glad others like it!

One problem I had were people purchasing it based on review scores and doing no research on the actual game beyond it being an RPG, so they would get bored and hate on it because of the sim aspect. Do people really buy games just based on their Metacritic score?

Judging by PS4 trophy information (kind of a weird source, I know), not a lot of people got past the second palace. Interesting.

This actually does happen from my personal experience. A friend of mine who literally almost never plays any JRPGs or story based games randomly bought Persona 5 to my surprise. I asked him what made him buy the game and he said it was the critical praise the game was getting everywhere. I just had a feeling at that point he wasn't going to be playing the game for long and sure enough he didn't even get past the first dungeon before giving up on it. It's a real shame.

But in any case, P5 is an absolutely amazing game and one of the best JRPGs of all time, deserving of all of its sales. It seems a lot more people are getting exposure to the series, even if not all of it is positive. It's still good overall and it is bound to create more fans in the process. With digital sales 2 million should be a lock already and the game's barely been on any big sales.

I haven't spent full price on a game in a long, long time.
Persona 5's Steelbook edition made me do it.

It's kinda strange how Persona "feels" way more popular and influential than these sales would indicate. I mean ~2 million is a LOT for a JRPG about japanese highschool students, but I wouldn't have been surprised if you had told me it sold 3 or 4 million already.

2 million sales on a staggered launch and terrible streaming conditions is no joke

And not localizing the game properly for Europe (only in english). Not a problem for me or my fellow Nordics but probably hampered sales decent amount in countries like France, Italy and Spain.

Stellar game and I'm glad this team was able to actually get it done considering all the crazy nonsense Atlus went through.

Well deserved. Its one of my favourite game this year and it might not most popular opinion but for me its my favourite Persona game and I played all them except the first one.

Don't forget the controversy surrounding its English localization and the utter lack of any localization in other Western languages.
Oh yeah, this too. Atlus absolutely needs to get their shit together and have at the very least spanish, french and german translations. If Tales Of can do it, why can't they?

It's one of these things where I'm real happy the game did well because it's insanely good and I love the dev team behind it, but I also don't want Atlus feeling comfortable with a lot of the completely backwards practices they used. The streaming policy was asinine, and I feel like good sales covers that up.

I also hope the localization team still looks at the job they did as somewhat below their usual standards. It's not bad by any means, but nowhere near the level of polish we were expecting.

I was hoping they would do bigger numbers because I wanted to see what a fully AAA Persona would look like.

Deserves much more to be honest.

But am sure Atlus has like a 5-year plan for this game in particular with spinsoffs and what not.

Still haven't bought it, just don't have the cash to justify full price games at the moment :(

I'll buy it some day. Delighted it's done well.
