COMICS!!! |OT| July 2017 | Princess, I've Seen the Way You Look At Me.

I haven't read any Marvel and DC stuff in ages. Most of the time I feel so overwhelmed I don't even know where to start.

I did pick up that massive Wonder Woman A celebration of 75 years collection, and I'm subscribed to Walking Dead, Invincible, Jem, and a few others, but there's so much to read, so little time. Although, and this is a shameless segue, now that I've finally wrapped up my comic, I have more free time (mainly catching up on sleep!). The graphic novel proof should be arriving tomorrow, and it's on track for it's August 30th release. It feels so, so good to finally be done with it. I've been working on this book, from concept to execution, since 2013. I'm super proud. 150 pages, written and illustrated by yours truly! I may not work for Marvel or DC, but I can knock having a graphic novel published off of my bucket list. A 24 year dream realized, but hey, better late than never.

Also, I finished reading Invincible #138, and O_O

I'm bummed the series is ending in a way, but I'm also super glad that it will have a conclusion. 144 issues is insanely respectable, especially to keep to the same team as long as they have. Cory Walker had a great run, but Ryan Ottley has been killing it, and I'm always blown away by how his work has progressed over the years. I'm excited to see what his next project is going to be.

EDIT: Top of the page?! Really?!

Cap Sam: I take back everything I said bad about New Patriot. I'm down with this kid.

Cap Steve: Are we really not going to talk about what Steve just did? Are we really going to lament his mommy? Okay then.

That the next comic is just Captain America #25 without Sam or Steve attached makes me really excited.

Deadpool: I think Wade probably has the worst life of any comic character. Even when he tries to do the right thing, he either fucks it up or it's for the wrong people. I see why Spider-Man/Deadpool is becoming Spider-Man vs. Deadpool.

Detective Comics: Are Azrael and Moon Knight analogs? They seem like they are. Guys. I love Cassandra Cain. Like, so so much. Again, it feels like I missed a page somewhere, but it's not too hard to follow.

Doctor Aphra: I love how awful a person she is. I love how often every thing she does falls apart. I just hate that with this as with all the tie ins, it feels like they can't do anything important because if it was that important we would have heard about it already.
Triple Zero and Beetee totally fucked her over!

Edge of Venomverse: I dunno, but this seems way more boring than Spiderverse. Probably has something to do with how samey the Venoms feel, where the spiders felt like actual unique takes. Or maybe it's just that this feels iterative and Spiderverse felt unique.

Wait. Secret Empire 7 is today, 8 is 8/9, 9 is 8/23, and 10 is 8/30? What madness is this?

I was willing to give Spencer the benefit of the doubt, to let the story play out before making a judgement but today's issue seals it. Secret Empire is a dumpster fire.

The breaking point for me? The reason Castle gives for siding with Hydra.

Absolute. Fucking. Bullshit.

Let me guess: he asks for Steve to revive his family with the cube and kill all criminals?

Shirtless Bear-Fighter #2: This is my favorite new book of the summer. If anything about the title of this book appeals to you, it's a no-brainer.
The montage of Shirtless going around the world fighting bears
in this issue had me rolling.

Secret Empire #7: I thought this was fine. It's unfortunate that we know so much about what happens after this story because
we already know Black Widow is going to be brought back and that a bunch of other characters will be resurrected or reset as well.
But more than ever I feel this needs to happen.
Too many characters have done irredeemable things at this point. It's not even about Steve anymore...what about Odinson. Scott Lang. Deadpool and Punisher. etc. I hope that all of these characters are either reset or killed and brought back by the end of the story.

What bothered me most about
Black Widow getting killed by Steve instead of Steve getting killed by Spider-Man was it kinda defuses all of Ulysses' predictions at the end of Civil War II, if this was indeed the moment then it seems like all of the pages devoted to those things don't matter since any writer can change whatever about them anyway.
Not that this wasn't obviously the case, but it's still an inauspicious moment.

edit: Oh I liked the last page of this issue a lot.

Saga 45: I still like the book but I'm not a huge fan of this arc.

X-Men Blue 8: One of my favorite Secret Empire tie-ins. I think there is more Emma in this issue than we have seen in almost anything else since IvX ended (
although she is full crazy now, apparently harboring fantasies of brainwashing Kid Cyclops into being more like Old Cyclops
). My favorite missing mutants pop up in this book all the time. It's a fun comic.

Infamous Iron Doom #10: Love this book. I really like where this is going. Question though for those who have read it,
who is the guy standing next to Doom's fake mom at the very end? Was that supposed to be the Maker?

I still can't believe the complete tone-deafness of Marvel having Punisher armour up as the new War Machine for Legacy. Bet Rhodey won't be brought back after Secret Empire, huh.

Yeah that was the Maker.

Yeah that was the Maker.

Thanks.

If they were smart they would go all the way back and bring back Goliath as well as Rhodey, but at this point I am just really pulling for Rhodey =/

Been getting back into Morrison's JLA recently. So much fun especially with the cast expanding (Plastic Man!). I just got to DC One Million and I'm about halfway through and it's such a pleasant event, especially compared to the usual stuff we get nowadays from the big two where everything is going to change the universe forever and all that. There's no bullshit and it just goes smoothly.

Also reread that one Spider-Man annual that Fraction did before OMD. I really miss his work with Marvel and it's a huge shame we never got him on a Spidey ongoing. I really think he could've done a character defining run like he did with Iron Fist and Hawkeye. He just gets what makes Pete and MJ work and it's such a fantastic issue.

Renew Your Vows is pretty solid so far at least. I got around to reading last week's issue and I enjoyed it quite a bit. The family angle works really well here.

Why isn't Grayson #1 new 52 worth more than a couple dollars at most? I thought the comic community loved this book...enough to give me more money. Also Nemesis and Super Crooks, i'm tired of hanging on to these flops.

I have never liked Rhodey. It will be interesting to see where that Punisher story goes.

I'm curious to see how Secret Empire wraps up with the Vanishing Point and Cosmic Cube in the mix.

This portion of Secret Empire today felt pretty cathartic

Secret_Empire_Miles.png

But yeah, I'm already burnt out. The fact that Marvel already went full into damage control mode to assure people that the status quo will be back to normal soon sucked any tension out of the series.

I'm also of the opinion that Secret Empire, on it's own is actually a pretty solid story. It just came out at the worst possible time, after a decade plus of Hero vs Hero event fatigue and the current real-world political climate being a nightmare.

Just read vol 1 of wicked + the divine. I liked the premise more than the actual story, but it was alright. Still have vols 2 and 3 to read.

At least the art is 11/10
I hated the art. Every male looks like Logan from OML and the action was hard to follow

Sorrentino kind of only draws that one face. His aesthetic is great, but the faces distract me.

From what I can tell,
she was trying to stop a standoff between Miles Morales and Cap, only for her neck to be broken by Cap's shield when she got in the way, killing her.

Edit: eh beaten.

Average, maybe 2-3 months? What are you looking into getting?

Thanks for the response man. They announced Hellboy pops over SDCC. I don't really follow them in general, only have one or two so I don't really know the right sites to keep an eye on for them becoming a real thing or anything!

I am Groot: What's the word when you expect nothing and end up loving it? Hastings is going to be one of Marvel's top writers soon.

Iceman: This is such an incredible comic and it legit makes me even madder about how America turned out. Seriously, if you were at all looking forward to America and you felt let down, give Iceman a shot and get back to me.

Iron Doom: I love this take on Doom. This actually reminds me a lot of Incorruptible, one of my all time faves.

Injustice 2: if plastic man is always this much fun, I understand the appeal of the character. "Sounds like the kid's on a crusade to avenge the murder of a loved one. Anything you can relate to there, Bruce?"
"…"

Moon Girl: I need this alt in Future Fight immediately. Devil Girl has a way cuter outfit. I actually wish we could read Devil Girl and Moon Dinosaur. An evil Lunella that fails at villainy and ends up saving people instead of terrifying them sounds awesome. But Moon Girl isn't written for me, so I'll stay in my lane.

Mother Panic: When is this going to cross over with Shade? Mother Panic is such a great book. Not good, great. I love how different Violett is from Batman. Actually, I'm curious: is there any true analog to Mother Panic? Cause that's deffo something I'd read.

So I read the newest Gwenpool....Did this just turn into a JoJo final villain origin story?

Also I love all the "We never left the (blank)" Photoshops that have been turning up.

Just started on the Hickman's Avengers omnibus, man, I really love how Hickman makes everything feel so epic in scale.

By the way, since the omnibus is volume 1, I assume an volume 2 is coming, would that end with Secret Wars? Also, interesting that he was building up to the incursion from pretty much the beginning here.

Yeah the second volume should be the rest of Avengers and New Avengers plus Secret Wars. Not sure what else they'll put in there. Probably won't happen but I'd love to see the Siege and Thors Secret Wars tie-ins included since those were the only tie-ins that directly affected the main book.

Knowing Hickman he probably had some of the the incursion stuff planned during Fantastic Four.

NEW BPRD TODAY YAAAAASSSSSS

Thanks for the response man. They announced Hellboy pops over SDCC. I don't really follow them in general, only have one or two so I don't really know the right sites to keep an eye on for them becoming a real thing or anything!

Fuck POPs. There are nicer statues and things out there. They have Animated Hellboy and Abe statues from Dark Horse. Pricey on the aftermarket but really nice. There's an Amazon seller listing the Abe statue for $25, no way is that place legit.

Thats the thing, I have no nice Hellboy things outside of the actual trades lol because they just don't make a lot of stuff for whatever reason, any time I look I only find old statues that aren't available for normal price or anything so pops it is man lol. I like the Geralt & Ciri well enough.

BPRD was good!

Following the multiversity reading order, I have a few hellboy stuff to read. What do I read after Hellboy in Hell?

Occupy Avengers: The Red Room team continues to be a better Champions than the actual Champions book. It honestly feels like all the characters in Occupy save Hawkguy could end up dead.

Never mind, this is the last issue. That went nowhere.

Saga: I didn't ask for this at all. What the fuck, why would you do that? 😢

Spider-Gwen: I don't care what anyone says, I still love this book. It's like having the Ultimate Universe back, but more interesting because they deviate from the normal canon.

Teen Titans: Starfire put Damian in his place and that's why I love her so. The art on this book is top notch.

Weapon X: This crossover is making me dislike Amadeus Cho more than I already did. He's really hardline on not killing bad people and now they have an avoidable super fight that he could have prevented if he did his damn job.

They certainly don't make a hell of a lot. Even less that isn't Hellboy himself. Who is even in the POP series?

Infamous Iron Man was great. So glad to see Doom and
The Maker
finally about to trade blows. Though it is a Bendis book, so that might not be until The last three pages of the last issue.
