Monster Hunter: World weapon demonstration videos

Lance seems shorter than in past games? Or is the iron lance just short like that? Edit: think iron lance is just thicker now but looks about same length, just more stubby

I think in the Japanese stream event the Lance user used a forward hop to close the gap between himself and the monster, Could be a game changer in terms of mobility which the weapon sorely needs IMO.
I mean, we already had turnaround back hops, shield charge, and joust charge... but I guess another option wouldn't hurt.

Looking insane.

Also the bow looks like tons of fun, I've never used ranged weapons in MH so I might give that a go this time around.

Looks fantastic. IG, SWaxe, and SnS all look to be better than ever. I hope all the SnS improvements from Generations is in World though, it'd be hard to go back to not having them. Especially the coatings.

I'm still kinda bummed about the muted colors and overall shiny look to everything though. It's probably due to years of 3DS limitations, but I'm kinda fond of the bright colors and the visual style of the armors. This new look is just very understated for all the sets we've seen so far.

I liked how they incorporated the aerial style from X to the SnS, it definetly felt like the proper way to play SnS without doing stuff like Bomb n Shield.

I also hope they incorporate the Gunlance dynamic from X in this, how firing the gun raised it's temperature but made the shells weaker every time, and poking was better at high temperatures but lowered it's heat. It was a neat mechanic that only neede number tweaks.

Please improve the phial effects from the CB, they lookr eally dinky, SA's were fine.

Everything else is as expected, give or take a few things like the air dashes from the glaive and the continuous ponds from the hammer (maybe they buffed the motion values on the normal pounds? i don't see why wouldn't you just proceed to golfswing).

Lance looks the same as ever. Why can't we lancer get a sick move like other weapons?
Because lance is about getting down to business all up in the monster's business

I for one am happy it's not changing too much. That triple poke finisher lance had in non-striker styles was not welcome.

People should stop referencing data that makes me feel uncomfortable because games get ported to platforms I don't like
A bunch of us have PS4 though right?

It wont be that bad

If Destiny Gaf can make it work
The game features a Cross Region Multiplayer server and IIRC this game is only coming out on PS4 in Japan (Not sure about a Japanese PC release) so without a doubt the PS4 version will have the biggest player pool so the only ones who might feel the fragmentation is the X1 players in the west and maybe PC players.

There are so many good things that I saw here that there are too many to count.

DB look badass, Hammer looks like extra fun now with you bashing the Monster's head in while it's down, The Gunlance move of leaving an explosive on the monster is hilarious, IG aerial looks crazy. So many great things for each weapon!

DBs genuinely wowed me when I saw the clip for the first time. Definitely the first weapon I’ll try when I get my hands on the game.

2018 cannot come soon enough. All of the weapon demonstrations just make me wish I could fly out for Gamescom this year. The changes to heavy bowgun are welcome and refreshing.

Each of the different firing methods in the showcase just add to the flair of long range hunting.

Haven't played since MH3U. Game looks so much faster than the last time I played. Insect Glaive and Duel Swords look soo fun to use, Attack on Titan style. The bow looks so much more interesting to use too. Gunlance looks disappointingly similar though.

I'll just get both. I don't think I'll do the same for Destiny though. Also I really don't like paying for PS+ so I'd probably only play the PS4 one until the PC version is out.

Did they show the spin attack for dual swords I'm not sure

They show the spinning aerial attack into a spin, but not the grounded spins.

But it has to be in the game. Dual Blades need their spin-2-win.

I like how the spinning aerial attack can now change into spinning across the surface of the monster.

They actually did show it in the part before the weapon name display.

Jealous of the Glory that is Johnny Depp
SwitchAxe looks amazing.

My fave weapons were the Hammer and GS, I just like big heavy weapons.

Cool, thanks for the clarification, i was kinda weirded out by the possibility of fighting humanoid 'monsters'.

But i guess you can customize your characters to look like this? That's awesome
Each monster has a different armor set. Not all of them are as cool as the Narga set though.

It's crazy to be reminded that there are 14 weapons types and all with crazy unique moves. They don't even show the crazy jumping and running attacks like the spinning hammer jump in the gameplay demo. So there's a whole lot more to learn.

Does anyone know what is happening in the Light Bowgun showcase? It looks like they're putting mines in the ground, but it looks more like AoE areas that trigger everytime you shoot at it?

It looks like after the mines are dropped they are activated as little fields of damage by being shot. I dunno if the ammo type would determine the type of damage. Would be neat if you could set mines for different element types.

There's been easily hundreds of armors over the course of the series, and there's quite a lot of variety between them. Most of them have different designs for the versions that work with long-range weapons.

Seems like there's a lot more interactivity now with regards to weapons having context-sensitive attacks that require direct contact with the monster, similar to the aerial style in MHX. For example:
  • the Dual Blade asura mode jumping attack seems to roll along the length of the monster tracing along its backside
  • the Longsword counter attack finish performs a running maneuver that then climbs up along the monster's body vertically to propel the hunter upwards before delivering a downward slash
  • The new Switch Axe finisher latches on the monster upon contact and then releases the phial charge while the blade is stabbed into the monster's body

As a Charge Blade main, I'm looking forward to more dynamic interactions during guard points. So far they haven't shown anything new for Charge Blade aside from the more flexible sidestep-to-attack transitions.

SWAX looking mighty fine.

Some of the character animations seem more natural (well... for characters throwing around 2 metre long weapons)

[*]the Longsword counter attack finish performs a running maneuver that then climbs up along the monster's body vertically to propel the hunter upwards before delivering a downward slash

That thrust into aerial isn't a counter attack finisher necessarily. That's just one of your options post counter, and other gameplay videos have shown the hunter doing the thrust and jump from standing/resting without needing to do anything before it.

That armor set that the Switch Axe hunters were wearing...I need to know what monster that's from. At glance you'd think it was some evolution of the Ceanataur set, but it definitely isn't, so must be a new monster. Also, the set that the Dual Blade hunters were wearing looked suspiciously like a Malfestio set redesign, given the colour palette. Man, I can't wait until they start revealing more of the monsters.

I love how often I'm seeing the comment "well looks like I'm maining every weapon.", I totally feel the same way. In 3U I only mastered LS and SA, in 4U I picked up CB and IG, and then in Gen with the help of all the styles I got a handle on nearly every other blademaster weapon. I still could never get into gunner stuff, aiming with the 3DS was simply not fun at all, but now MH is a modern console game you can play with a real controller with two real analog sticks, you can aim and shoot like any regular third-person shooter! So I plan on giving them all a spin. Hopefully there will be new ways to organize and acquire ammo types.

But the final frontier for me is Hunting Horn. I've never been one to pick a single weapon and loadout and make it my main forever, I love making new weapons and changing it up all the time, so when I see that every HH has not only its own unique set of songs you have to memorize, but different colors that correspond to the notes for each one, that seems like way too much to relearn every time I want to put on a new one. If they as much as unify the note system, I will probably bite the bullet and go all in.

You and me both.

At this point, the only thing I'm not overly impressed with are our first two newbie monsters. Let's see who's the new "flagship"!

I hope Lagombi armor returns. Cutest armor.

My Gen mains were SwAxe, SnS, LS, Bow and IG. I'm definitely looking to branch out, especially into the bowguns and lances.

Please make the Funlance not terrible, Capcom.

When people talk about maining and mastering weapons, they just mean that they, the players, get good and comfortable with the weapon, its movesets and its strengths and weaknesses, right? There's no weapon-related EXP or anything your character will gain over the course of the hunts when you use a particular weapon type?

No, there's no permanent stat growth of any kind, except for felynes. All the power progression and passive bonuses come from equipment or from meals that you can eat before setting out.

Has anyone mentioned how godlike the music is in these weapon videos? The music so far is shaping up to be another god-tier MH OST.

The pretty much all look great, especially liked the Insect Glaive, Dual Blades and most of all Switch Axe. Can't wait to try out my first Monster Hunter.

Curious how much freedom do you have with armour selection? Can you go full fashion-souls and mix and match as much as you like? Never really being at a disadvantage. Or should you really only wear a full set of a specific armour?

Edit: Thanks for the great explanation Night!

You craft new weapons, and there's a weapon tree. You never gain weapon exp, but there's an investment of parts and money to building mid and late game weapons. Nothing that a little farming won't fix, though, which you'll need as practice with whatever weapon you're swapping to.

The gameplay of different weapons is very different, so picking up a new weapon takes a lot of practice. Mastering a weapon takes a while, so most people pick one or two (maybe 3) as their usual loadout.

Each piece of gear gives skill points. In past MH games, you were not able to freely mix and match because you had to have a certain number of points before skills activated. It seems like they're changing that up a bit for this one, but I bet that in general you'll want to wear a full set (or very specific mixed sets) to maximize your effectiveness. Mixing randomly has usually led to people that look cool but have no armor skills (attack/defense up, speed sharpening, extra crits, etc).

Yes, it's just your skill as a player - switch weapons where you're comfortable fighting with it or just when you feel like it. Upgrading weapons is basically improving your damage and sharpness (or element type).

That's correct. It's just like maining and mastering characters in a fighting game.
