Well okay.
I don't really know anybody involved here so I'm just gonna move on

The Switch version of Overcooked is apparently having some issues. Robinson tweeted talking shit about the game and people who dislike him say that he creeps on women in the gaming industry by messaging them a lot or something like that. Somebody also claimed that he creeped on their underage friend. I don't think I've seen any proof of it yet, no discriminating screenshots, but at this point it seems pretty likely that the guy is a douche. He also used to intern during the whiskey media days and is now working at Polygon.
Thanks.
Seems like a weird reason to blow this open?
Anyway, I'm not gonna touch that sinc I have no idea who is "somebody" and who is just a random twitter egg

What I don't understand is how would Nick have any power to keep people silent. Isn't he just some other underpayed dude living in the Bay area? Or is he actually rich and powerful and I just don't know about it?

Almost finished the first area in Tumbleseed but the last screen is some bullshit. It was such a good run too.

Damn you Tumbleseed!

Dude's got tens and thousands of followers on Twitter. That's usually more than enough.

How long before Nick quits Polygon and starts a Patreon appealing to alt right folks?

For real, it's a bummer though. Always thought he was a funny dude, but he can go fuck himself after this.

*****
Does JSRF control better than the original? I saw a copy in a store near me recently and was considering it but I don't want to spend the money on it if it feels the same as the first game since I wasn't super into that.

They also have Shenmue 2 and despite thinking the first game looked like trash I kinda want to buy it

Fuck him, and fuck Griffin/Ben/Kessler/etc if they were aware of this.

It controls much, much better than the original.

(not to say that it's a better game, but still)

Money's got nothing to do with it. It's clout that's power. You already hear about how the GB guys have to tell their fans to stop "defending" them anytime an overzealous duder decides to send hate tweets at a dev or something. I can't imagine the type of pick up artist assholes would try to use this as a platform.

Assuming any of this is confirmed true or not. But yeah, a lot of industry people are talking about it.

The gaming industry is all about influence and there’s a lot of networking involved. Being on the bad side of a popular person with tons of followers is pretty scary since you can easily be shunned by the community and lose work because of it.

That sucks. Hope Griffin isn't implicated.

JSRF is fucking great.

I'd think Griffin's too busy with the literal millions of other projects he's working on at any given moment (also, a baby!) to know anything about this stuff.

It's not a great look for Nick. Hopefully he can, at the very least, acknowledge his wrongdoing. Seems like a whole bunch of people had a lot to say.

Does sounds like Nick is a douche but the vagueness around what he's actually done is possibly going to blow this out of all proportion. Is it really 'a lot' of industry people? Because I saw one guy make a joke, then 1 person make a claim that he was DMing an underage girl, then 2 people post threads basically saying "There's something to this".

Happy/disappointed to be corrected on this but I found it weird to see all this chat in here and then virtually nothing on Twitter.

Agreed, I would feel better about this if a screenshot gets leaked implicating him. So far it's a lot of hearsay. I wanna see the receipts

Yeah, it's late at night and I don't wanna keep talking as if it's 100% confirmed already or whatever. Just gonna hope we get a clearer picture in the morning.

Still find his reaction to the Overcooked thing completely off-putting though.

I saw editors from Kotaku and Waypoint tweet about this, a lead at Riot, and dozens and dozens of people kowingly reacting to the tweet from a Producer at Alpha Six Productions. Basically, following quite a few people from the industry on Twitter made it pretty clear most of these people knew about this in some form.

If you guys' reaction is "Nah, I want receipts and proof!" then that is clearly your problem, not theirs. They are not telling you not to watch his content or do anything, they are just sharing their stories because they now feel safe to do so. However vague they want to be, that's OK and only their decision. They don't have to provide screenshots of private conversations they feel embarassed about to the public as if they are in a court of law.

Believe numerous poeple all indendentely reporting and saying the same thing, or don't. But don't demand. Because that's exactly the reason women do not speak up about this stuff. Because they are immedeately put into the position of attacker who has to proof anything she says. Hey, guess what: Often you don't tape your conversations. Even more often you are embarassed that you allowed yourself to be put into a position where another person can, in some form or other, prey on you, victimize you or use you in some shape or form - even though it's not actually your fault. See this tweet from Gita Jackson for example:

If your first reaction to that is "I NEED THE RECEIPTS" then, man...I can't really help you and neither can these women.

I've seen talk that the people that were tweeting claims have since made their profiles private. For instance it looks like Alex asked a few people (whose profiles are private) what was going on https://twitter.com/alex_navarro/status/893274198415745024

Been meaning to post here for a while since I, too, love ~the Giant Bomb~, but boy did I pick a great time to jump in with this Nick Robinson controversy. Thought he was cool and even started following him on Twitter because he usually has some really funny shit going on there. Unfortunately, he seems to be a bad person.

I enjoy the McElroys and know how hard they keep trying to improve their stuff to be more respectful and inclusive. Griffin seems to be a stand-up dude. Ben and Kessler also seem to be stand-up dudes. I really do hope they reach out, talk to Nick, and get him to straighten things out. With how many women are starting to speak up about it, there's probably something not right going on there. And I totally trust all those names because of their association with Austin, a guy who has always been real and true and good.

I'm not actively hoping for the guy's demise or whatever, but if all this shit rising up is true, he needs to own up to it, apologize, and make amends. What he's done seems to have negatively affected a decent amount of people. I'd like to believe he can still change for the positive.

ANYWAY how bout that beastcast comin in hot in 10 minutes let's go

It would be weird for aurahack and Ali West (both of whom were retweeted by Austin) to suddenly be posting stuff like this if there were nothing to it. IDK that I'd say it's 100% confirmed to be true that the dude is a creep, but it would be an odd set of circumstances if there was nothing to it.

What's the over/under on them discussing the P3/P5 dancing games being announced on the Beastcast?

(Not a chance, but it'd be hilarious.)

I'm not trying to defend anyone, or asking for proof of anything, I'm just seeing a lot of people saying 'fuck Nick Robinson' and asking why. Sounds like from these replies that the context is on private twitter accounts.

Here's the thing though, being vague makes it worse for everybody. If Nick is a known creep by many people those people need to do something about it, not tweet.

yeah I've been seeing subtweets about Nick for a long time and last night was pretty much a climax. Fuck that dude wholeheartedly. A person like that doesn't deserve the platform he has.

Oh no. Milkshake ducked. :(

I always assumed Nick was gay for some reason.

Edit: just reread this and it reads really callously in any context, especially where there may be victimised people. Dumb post.

If your first reaction to that is "I NEED THE RECEIPTS" then, man...I can't really help you and neither can these women.

They are asking for specifics not because they don't trust the people tweeting about it. They are asking for specifics because they don't trust themselves to draw the right conclusions based on vague information and subtweets and private tweets. It comes from a place of confusion rather than malicious intent to blame the victim. You have some people who only know one party and some people who have no idea who either party is.

Maybe it gets hashed out in private. Or maybe it will be put on display on twitter. Who knows. The only people who know for sure what is going on are the people directly involved.

Notice how the people coming forward largely seem to be the friends of those who've been harassed to maintain their anonymity? If it was just a throwaway comment by the Over Cooked devs then I wouldn't blame folks for asking for more evidence. Given that professionals have come forward who'd have no reason to do so and have less of a social media influence than Nick I think it's pretty damning.

I'm really disappointed, especially given Gita's phrasing makes it seem like an industry wide issue. I just hope people haven't been protecting/enabling him.

Nah it's just shitty young men taking part in the patriarchy like every aspect of society.

Don't mistaken it as a video games only thing because that shit is everywhere.

Eh, easy one to me. Disown that pos. You don't keep people like that as friends.

And if he knew before than i have no sympathies, but I'll let him talk about it on his own terms.

No, absolutely not. Victims of abuse, harassement, manipulation or anything else don't NEED to do anything. They need to look out for themselves. And if the gaming industry has proven one thing int he last few years, it's that it's not safe for women to talk about harassement, because there is a HUGE part of the gaming community who will attack them for it and make their life a living hell. It's more than understandable that they don't want to openly talk about this stuff. And it's not on other people to "out" them and say "Hey, this specific person was harassed, go an ask her about it!!".

Don't put this on the victims and tell them that they HAVE to do something, despite what's best for them and how they cope with the situation. This is only on Nick and his friends and collegues who knew about it but didn't do anything about it.

All other things aside, that reply to the Overcooked person alone seemed way out of line.

Yeah, his tweet about Overcooked was incredibly disrespectful.

But the other stuff is on another level.

If Ben has a podcast with him I hope he says something. He doesn't deserve protection.
