Game of Shadows was a total blur (so was the first).

And this was just after 20 minutes from seeing the film in theaters.

Annapurna Pictures isn't messing around with Detroit. That sort of film getting 3k venues is crazy.

On the other end of things, it looks like A24 decided to skip a wide release for A Ghost Story. It was in 329 venues last weekend, but is dropping 120 of them this weekend.

Valerian dropping half of its venues is not surprising. I'm surprised the drop isn't higher. The other 1700 venues will have to fight over that juicy $2.5-3M third weekend. If Valerian ends up on the lower end of that range, it could conceivably lose to Wonder Woman's 10th weekend.

Guy Ritchie + that 6 person writers room talk got me wondering...

Has Ritchie said anything about the future of his King Arthur franchise? Or is it full speed ahead into the loving arms of Disney and just hoping people forget about it?

Game of Shadows does have Jared Harris as Moriarty. Which is probably the only good/memorable thing to note about it.

Dude just went and never made another movie as good as Snatch. Everything since then has been mediocre except for the soundtracks.

And Snatch is really just a less good/more convoluted version of Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, frankly.

My boy Nolan looking smug af.

Reminds me that I wrote a review for the high school paper on Game of Shadows.

What a cheesy ass flick. I remember making a fuss about the serious lack of Rachel McAdams.

I remember doing reviews in my high school paper for That Thing You Do in theaters, then VHS reviews of True Lies and Independence Day. I can't remember what other films I wrote reviews for back in 96 and 97.

With True Lies, I was reviewing it finally getting a letterbox release on VHS, which was great for me. For ID4, about a third of the review was bashing the first VHS release for being pan and scan and missing half the movie. I remember a bunch of students giving me shit for that because they were too stupid to realize how much they were missing on most of their VHS rentals/purchases.

My boy Nolan looking smug af.

Does he have another expression?

It's reviewing higher than I expected. Feels like an early award contender. Hopefully it being in all those theaters helps drive the awards buzz. A lot of young actors in there I really like.

My school paper was a fun class to take my senior year in HS.
The article I got the most attention for was about them swapping some of the restrooms on the second floor between genders. For the first three years I was there, this one restroom was a men's room. But when senior year started it was a women's room, and the smaller restroom down the hall became the men's room.
I discovered this during one of the first days of that year when I walked in and thought to myself, "Wow, they finally put doors on the stalls!" (the men's restrooms at the school didn't have doors on the stalls except for the handicap one). Then a girl walks out of one of the stalls. Then a few more come in through the entrance. Of course, I looked like the schmuck there and promptly left. Eventually I found where they moved the men's room to, and sure enough, they took the doors off the stalls there. It's like they thought boys don't need privacy if they have to do more than pee.

That sounds like it comes right out of a bad sitcom.

Phoniciple's story reminds me of something. Having a little kid, I find myself having to visit a lot more public washrooms. I have a daughter, but she's 3, so I have to take her into the men's washroom when it's just the two of us. In one grocery store we were in, the men's washroom consisted of one stall and 2 urinals. The only toilet must have been visited by an elephant before we got there, because there was a mound of crap reaching out of the bowl. Trying to avoid gagging, I left that mess and I asked a female employee if she could check if the women's washroom was empty so I that could take my kid in there instead. They had like 6 full stalls and 3x the sinks. It's like the men's side was an afterthought.

Back on Topic, it looks like Alex Garland (director of Ex Machina) has his next film out this February. It's an adaptation of Jeff Vandermeer's novel Annihilation. I have heard good things about that book (and the trilogy it is part of), but haven't gotten around to reading it yet. Hopefully the film is good.

Looks like someone created a thread on it, and it's been done since early this year and they're just sitting on it for now. Which tells me first that it isn't good enough to try to push for awards season (which isn't that surprising), and two that they probably don't expect it to be a particularly big hit.

Considering The Dark Tower just got a showrunner announced today, I figure most studios are still wary to call time of death on their franchises and just put out a statement claiming everything's still alright.

The Dark Tower is a existing IP with an established fanbase. (and who knows what state the show will be in after this weekend)

GR's King Arthur is bullshit.

Ex Machina opened in April, didn't it?

edit: yeah, early April. The 10th.

So basically, this is coming out two weeks before his last movie did.

Does Dunkirk have full reign of IMAX screens until Inhumans on September 1st?

Is there anything notable in between?

Nope. This is the slow season for IMAX, which is part of the reason they're trying to get into showing things like TV shows in IMAX, especially given that the Game of Thrones thing they did last year did well for them. They just were unfortunate in that this time, they lucked into a Scott Buck production.

Edit: This is also an effect of the whole idea of blockbuster seasons. With the exception of movies like Gravity, the fact that no one releases blockbusters in September or October means that no one releases movies shot in IMAX for that time either, so they're stuck with basically re-running the end-of-summer movies or trying to book special events.

That sort of film probably wasn't going to be an awards season type film, even if it was good.

I meant more along the lines that usually, you don't sit on a completed film for that long unless you're trying to angle for awards season and release it at the end of the year. Them sitting on it for what looks like nearly a year makes me think that they don't think very much of it.

Some Audiences Tire of Expletive-Filled Films, Study Finds
Filmmakers using “fuck,” “Goddam” and “Jesus Christ” as a swear risk losing some of their audience, according to a new Harris poll.

Using “Jesus Christ” to swear is the biggest offense, with 33 percent of the general public saying they’d be less likely to see a movie if they knew beforehand of that particular piece of dialogue. “Goddam” was second at 32 percent and “fuck” was third with 31 percent.

Naturally, various demographics disagree on the acceptability of profanity in movies, with young people not minding nearly as much as the elderly. In fact, more than half of those 72 years of age and older will avoid movies with “Goddam” and “fuck” in the dialogue.

Also, Republicans are turned off by swearing more so than are Democrats, and it’s not even close. “Fuck,” for example, will repel 45 percent of Republican moviegoers and only 25 percent of Democrats.

Opinions also vary among the sexes, with 37 percent of females saying “fuck” bothers them in movies while only 26 percent of males agree.

Man from UNCLE is actually good.

School paper has always been one of those foreign concepts to me. I don't know if we have them in the UK but my school definitely didn't have one.

I'm in the UK and used to write the film review column for my school paper, though it must be said "paper" was an exceptionally strong word for it.

Audiences who don't go to cinemas don't like swearing. Industry gives literally no shits.

How do they expect the boys to shit? In the open? That's pretty weird.

Thursday
Dunkirk: $3.34m
Wonder Woman: $440k

Good day again for both. Wonder Woman is going to end up annoyingly close to $400m after the weekend. Probably ~399.6m or so.
