this is the fastest version of the XB1 OS I ever experienced. Navigating everything doesnt have random hiccups anymore and I love the changes to hubs and clubs.

It's faster but it feels like just about anything you wanna do is 1-2 steps longer. Kind of negatates the speed IMO

Honestly this whole update screams "how can we promote our ads and mixer better" not "personalization"

I believe promoting Mixer, Clubs, and other social features is 100% the goal of the new Home interface. I'm sure they were discussing it and saying "Mixer and the clubs are great but not enough customers are using them. How can we expose and encourage their use?" This home experience is their stab at it. The problem is that if you aren't interested in those things, they may not be ads but they essentially feel like ads to the user because it's visual promotion of something you don't want.

I'm not completely happy with it, but it's definitely a huge improvement over the previous UI. It's still in alpha, so I expect some tweaks before launch.

Yep, this is the same thing that's happening to iOS. It's absolutely hideous, how they're managing to go backwards is beyond me. This is the ugliest rendition of an Xbox home screen yet tbh. I don't quite understand how adding things to home will be of any use. Shoving ads and suggested users in your face, so much wasted space. The entire thing is confusing to navigate.

Yeah, I'm not a fan. At the end of the day performance is king and this seems like it brings that, but it feels like a Zune OS rather than a refinement of the Metro design.

Despite a few oddities, loving the dash now. Really like how the main dash swaps the icon out when I make installing/updating something. Nice to see it right there.

Love the dash when it's working but has anyone else has all of their home blocks disappear? Just the main block and the block that shows my last few apps show now. Really weird. I've also had a few crashes.

Edit: did a hard reset and it didn't fix it.

I believe this is a bug. There was a tutorial on moving blocks, but when I try myself the X1 just crashes to a black screen. For moving oins themselves within the block I think they made it so now press start or menu or whatever that button is called?
Also getting the black crash screen, seems to happen when I try to edit the block of a 360 game.

All installed, looks okay, it feels faster at first glance. I like the side bar having tabs. The batch moving of content will come in handy when I upgrade from my current 2TB to a 4TB external.

So I've had a chance to dig into the new UI.

I really like the new guide layout. It's very fluid, simple and zippy. Especially the card style design when looking at other smaller windows like achievements.

The overall speed is a lot quicker too which I thought was great.

The new highlighted selection cursor is something I never knew I would like this much.

My main gripe is the home screen. It's simply very odd in its design. While the layout is very cool, I dislike the ads and will never use the find friends, at least not like that.

Overall I am impressed.

My Zune HD OS was/is amazing. If they can replicate that feel then I would be really impressed.

Super annoyed by the My Games and Apps section constantly crashing on me. Every time I hit the right trigger, it sends it to a black screen.

Welcome to the alpha ring.

Oh I expected issues. It's just habit for my to do it so it keeps crashing. I'll just have to make sure I'm jumping to letters using Y instead.

For upcoming features, I would love PiP with transparency for any apps that stream. Watching The International while playing something would be kinda nice.

It is growing on me aesthetically. It does feel like a much tighter experience and the speed increase between menus cannot be understated.

I believe that, to see which friends are actually online, you need to press to go at least one step further than previously? It's part of a submenu further into the guide.

but the guide is so much quicker and responsive that its negligible. Also it makes it more organized. I have 300+ friends and im 20+ clubs, having to scroll through all that was kinda annoying but now I dont have to scroll pass all my friends to get to clubs or scroll [ast clubs to get to friends.

I don't disagree. Was just giving an example for the guy who brought up that some content is a few extra clicks away now.

*missed party invite*

**confused where to go**

***took way too long***

Microsoft, minus 5 points.

Yeah, notifications grouped with settings is a bit odd, although to be fair it's referred to as the action center and groups the two just like Win 10 does. (maybe they should match the icon with the action center icon in desktop though?)

Looks like they corrected the full color space issue? Black crush was always apparent in box arts on the dash and it seems like they finally fixed it.

Yep they really need to use the action centre icon. From that screen they should also allow us to turn off controllers and full shutdown the console.

For me it's any and all blocks. I've been successful in being able to move or delete a block about 1 in 20 of the times I try. Luckily a guick guide button back to home clears up the crash.

And this is the update that makes me opt out of the insider program after 3 years. Even the insider app is taking a shit on me. It won't even let me opt out because it is saying I was never in and need to register again. I can no longer connect in parties now and last but not least, this dashboard is a fucking nightmare. It's now telling me that I can't open some games because I need Xbox Live. WTF.

At this point I just want to revert back to the old dash so I can at least enjoy being online.

This blows.

Hate how it takes an extra button press to get to the old vertical list of friends. The vertical guide was fucking great and there was no need to change it.

It feels like MS are making changes to appease the complaints of people who rarely used the previous dash and still wont use the new one.

The reason they do this is because its a trick to make the UI faster. As they do not need to populate the full list each time you get on that tab they can download the necessary data in the background instead. People ask for a faster UI have to understand that the UI is still heavily dependent to your internet connection by the need to download the social graph from Xbox Live each time you do a new log in.

The "Social graph" is the structure all your social data is stores on Xbox Live and includes Friends, Activities and such. The "Social Graph" has to be downloaded each time you log into the system and is cached after the initial download on your console but is still updated driven by events raised by Xbox Live.

Can't get Cortana to do anything this morning, except prompting "listening". Thanks Cortana.
*edit - she's back ! and now she displays the command I said half an hour ago. Seriously guys, add a timeout to such stuff, getting a reaction that late is adding insult to injury. Like asking the waiter "can I have ketchup please ?" at the beginning of a meal and see him bring it when you're eating your dessert...

Would it kill them to just allow folders or 'sections' so that you can say "here is where my games go, however many I want and nothing but games"? Whatever ads there may or may not be on PS4 (don't recall seeing any recently besides PS Now), at least I can stuff it all in a folder where I don't have to look at it.

My Games & Apps and filter them to show only games/apps etc.

Would be nice to have multiple sections of pins and custom name them but I often only have the few titles I regularly use/play.

Well I know you can filter them after going into that menu, but I mean more of a permanent fixture on the main screen rather than having to go two or more layers deep every time.

I do like the ability of pinning your game of the moment to quickly access its latest news and activity (plus quick shortcut for when your recent history is filled with all the apps you've been using). It's a bit redundant with the game hubs though.

Edit:
I just saw on twitter that you are now able to move/copy games and apps in bulk. Thats a blessing for those going to use external drives as a migration preparation to Xbox One X. Will save you a lot of time because currently you have to do it game by game, app by app which is annoying.

It is true! This is a screenshot that shows the new options. As you can see there are new button for "Select All" "Copy selected" and "Move selected".

Indeed this will make things much easier than now!
Holy crap! This is wonderful news.
Moving games over one-by-one was such a freaking slog when I moved from a 1TB to a 3TB external.

I held off on moving to a 4TB recently specifically because I didn't want to do that again, because even after every one you queue up to move, there's a little pause making the whole process so. freaking. tedious.

It looks nice overall and seems to perform well, but I really don't like the exaggerated glow effect around anything that's selected. It looks like the sort of thing I'd add to all my images in Photoshop when I was learning how to use it in school. Really doesn't fit well with the rest of the design, looks garish and the colour doesn't even match the one I chose in the personalisation menu.
