One thing I am disappointed with is the live action stuff. From the dev diary where they showed some of the scenes, I thought they'd be alright and the scenes with that one character (can't remember his name but he's the dude who shows up in the
fire areas
) are but most of the others (especially the stuff with
her dead lover
but also some of the stuff with
her mother
) just don't blend in well enough with the game assets. You can clearly see that it's live action footage and it totally takes me out of the experience which is a bit of a shame.

Oh and the bit I'm currently at is super frustrating. I keep dying over and over again because it's a timed sequence but the only way to figure out where I'm supposed to go is trial and error and I can't even really see where I'm going so it's not like I can just map out the area and then remember where I need to go the next time around which makes it all the more annoying. I get that it's probably meant to be frustrating but I feel like they took it a bit too far with this one section. EDIT: Turns out this was kinda my own fault because I thought I had to go somewhere I didn't actually have to go LOL.

All in all I'm enjoying it, though. Good writing, interesting characters and backstory, gorgeous graphics, great atmosphere, the combat is fun for the most part and most of the puzzles aren't too bad either.

EDIT: Oh and one minor nitpick would be that I'm not a huge fan of the movement mechanics with the weird strafing stuff. I mean, it's not a big deal and it works perfectly well controls-wise but some of the movements it results in just feel a bit unnatural at times and can look a bit weird. But like I said, this isn't a big deal, just my personal preference.

I've never played any of their games or just don't care for them, only played this because it's about psychosis and have been impressed so far. Other than an obscure indie game like Auti-Sim, I haven't come across a videogame trying to simulate a mental illness through audio in such an enveloping manner. For that experience alone, it's worth playing. Since there's no HUD or button prompts, the voices are basically your guide. If there's an enemy about to attack you from behind, they'll tell you. If you're stuck on a visual illusion puzzle, they'll guide you to follow a song or where all the rune markers are. When you're about to die, they'll tell you to get up. It is amazing, frankly.

Heh, interesting. I might grab it later this week. Just realized it's digital only so it's even more tempting

All I can say is that the use of binaural audio is incredible here. Corpse Party used it in a few instances but it's a rather rare thing to see in games. It's perfect here and makes for a more terrifying experience. Very well done.

The sound is outstanding.

Decided to stick with 30fps mode. The lower resolution on my 4K TV was really noticeable to me. Great game so far.

Someone posted about a problem with wireles XO Controller on PC a few pages back.. right stick not working. I'm having the same issue, so you're not alone, buddy.

I'm gonna try a wireless 360 pad next and then a DS4. Hope one of them works.. I'm playing on my 4K TV so mouse & keys are not an option. Game looks good. Got it to run at `almost` 60 FPS on i7-7700 + GTX 1080 (no OC).

Enjoying it a lot the PS4 Pro - shame the 60hz mode really is low quality (seems lower than 1080p to me) but enjoying the atmosphere and story. Audio is excellent assuming you use headphones, finding it hard to hear anything properly on a 5.1 surround setup mind you.

Wait, the game has
live action footage?
another classic staple from Ninja Theory returns :D

Ok I literally know next to nothing about this game, in fact I just heard about it today. I really like the premise but I don't want to watch much gameplay so I don't get spoiled. How's everyone liking the game?

I think I solved it. I just uninstalled the wireless adapter and reinstalled it, resynced the gamepads (i tried with 2 of them) and it now works. Try this "fix" if you can't move the camera with a wireless XO Controller in Hellblade.

Can you use any regular pair of headphones or do you need like 5.1 surround sound headphones (that I don't have)

I've not picked this up yet due to "other games" but I am such a fan of binaural audio, it's been around for absolutely years but Lou Reed was my first experience of it and I think it could be so important for games.

It can be such an immersive experience in games and really wish all games would have a binaural mode as it's capable of really putting you inside the game in a way that's far more involving that positional audio.

I'd be in the dick
Even in long stretches where the game doesn't have combat, it's use of sensory manipulation still makes it a tense and physically taxing experience. Engaging in a unique way.

I want binaural audio in every game now.

Bought it today after reading some Reviews. Played a bit without a Headset and afterwards with one. Holy shit! The difference is gigantic. Normally I don't care about gaming with a Headset, but this game changes everything. You feel totally immersed.

Fighting is fun. The puzzles are boring though. Overall nice experience for 30 bucks. Can't wait to play more tomorrow.

Whats worse is its blurrier when you start moving, add 60fps to the mix and you have instant vomit inducing shit.
Funny thing is I know there are people playing it in this mode because of 60fps, and fucking horrible.
it looks terrible and feels terrible to play too.

I know why I think she's gormless looking, shes always looking upwards [them eyes do not move from that position] with her mouth open and theres no other expressions
But don't get wrong I know I sound negative, but I am enjoying the game so far lol.

Yeah, I get what you're talking about.

Beat Valravn and Surt, great fights!

60 FPS mode looks very blurry, is this normal ?

The game is so intense, I have never experienced something like that, please guys, play the game with headphones

Yes, unfortunately. It's not 1080p, check also ign comparison video to confirm.
Looks like it's 900p or lower. Still worth it in my opinion for the improved frame rate.

Can someone tell me how to use the photo mode on the PC? I press down, and the filters and all come up, but how does one actually take a snap?

I dont agree personally. The lower resolution stood out a lot for me, the motion blur in particular was really bad at the lower res.

It feels really good. Moveset is basic but the fights are tense and weighty
You know you can do sprint attacks too?

The game is so, so good and lived up to its expectation for sure. Nearly finished now but I've had a blast with it.

Yep. There was a fight on a bridge in some dynamic lighting that was awesome with the sprint attacks.

Not a fan of Senua, she looks fine in the artwork but in game she's probably the most gormless looking character I've ever played.

...She's mentally ill.

I think her design is great and the mo-cap performance seems top notch.

Had no problem with motion blur personally. There's a strange stutter on the 30fps version I don't like, while 60fps is pretty much rock solid and that's why I prefer it.
'sides, in a game smeared with post process effects as this one is, image clarity is not a priority for me. Not saying I prefer it, but that's my opinion I guess.

You have to use third party software like FRAPS, Afterburner, Nvidia Share and the like to take the screenshot. You can also use Nvidia's Ansel (ALT+F2).

acg: "horizon not zero dawn". Yeah, the art design is unfortunate given that HZD basically just came out. When I saw pics of this I actually thought it was DLC.

Will probably give it a go soon regardless.

The combat is really good, or should I say the encounter designs are really good and the entire experience of fighting is weighty and very satisfying even if the mechanics are simple.

The fight against
Valravn
was possibly one of my favourite moments in gaming. The fight had a sense of constant escalation, the
comeback mechanics and the way the fight was designed with adds allowing you to recharge in between main tussles
gave it really satisfying rhythm.

The way the
focus mechanic
seamlessly introduces itself made the rise in tension during the final section soooooo damn satisfying. Looked pretty incredible when
the focused kicked
in, too.

The puzzles in
Valravn's keep
were decent, some of them quite spooky. The atmosphere throughout that place was so thick, his
song and the effigies strewn around that came to life/disappeared as you peeked around a tree or looked though a portal...

So far this game is amazing.

Bought.

Will play later when I am not on that Lawbreakers pipe. I'm a HUGE fan of the 7-15 hour SP experience game that is priced right. This day and age it is really rare for me to complete a massive RPG of 50+ hours, and that happens to be the only SP game's worth a shit anymore.

Exception to that rule was Prey, but that was 30 hours I think I spent on that.

Ok I know it was said earlier that this isn't a scary game, but a couple of the trials like the complete darkness and swamp sent chills down my spine.

Before I dive in, is there a screencap or something of the part that caused Sterling to get his save ruined, so I know to look out for whatever happened to him?

Well, I got to a door where I have to find a N and Y-like letter. But after dealing with the enemies I'm trapped and cannot leave that small area infront of the door which I cannot open before I find these signs that are probably to be found somewhere else I cannot get to. I literally searched for 30 minutes in that tiny area before I came to conclusion there was something wrong.

I guess the photo mode may brake things in specific situations.

Maybe a reload will fix it, but it's late and I try tomorrow.

It's there... hidden in the
shape of the shadows cast by the light from the entrance of the cave
. Unless you had a bug and it wasn't appearing of course.

Hold focus and point towards where
the light is falling on the wall
and you'll see it taking shape.

Thanks, I'll try that out by tomorrow. Sterling's bug really made be paranoid. I had similiar experiences in P&C adventures and it really takes out the fun because I think it's a bug everytime I stuck for more than a couple of minutes.

What difficulty is everyone playing on? I have it set to Auto.
Me, too, since I think that's the difficulty that is meant to be played at by the developers.

Doesn't work for me either. I can apply 4k but the game's not actually rendering in 4k. Using fullscreen of course.
Regarding my earlier issue with Nvidia's DSR and not being able to play at 4k:
One have to set the desktop resolution to desired in-game resolution. Then change it in-game, and set the video mode to "borderless window".
