LG promises HDR gaming input lag patch for 2016 OLED sets

I really stopped believing a fix is coming, LG even has on their site to crank up Dynamic Contrast as the "fix".

http://www.lg.com/ca_en/support/product-help/CT20098005-20150410129990-others

The article has been getting flagged by people so someone at LG had to add a comment lol:

NOTE: Gamers have already voiced their disapproval with this update by expressing being very dissatisfied with this article. I sympathize with gamers and appreciate their passion about playing these video games and optimizing picture quality not in an aspect of being more realistic but going all out displaying details on screen in utmost meticulous possibility. I get that!

Problem is when you evaluate article as being very dissatisfactory or dissatisfactory you are really not endorsing the writer to champion your cause and fight for what you believe is right by returning picture adjustments to original settings.

Proper etiquette would have people disapproving of what LG engineers did to their television by providing such feedback to that effect via article evaluation but assessing article more favorably as satisfied or very satisfied.

This way, when presented to headquarter, it will be clear to them that it's not an article issue but an unwarranted and unsolicited action by factory engineers without prior consent from users that is the cause of this upheaval.

So, if the article comes out very satisfactory but the comments disapprove of the action taken, there is a greater chance LG will react in favor of those voicing their discontent with the update, not the article, and make the necessary alterations to the TV and not the article.

Hoping your comprehension in this matter will unite our voices in rectifying occasional unintentional wrongs we may commit and become better listeners with our customers.

Still haven't updated and I guess I'll hold off. So far only one poster with positive comments on the firmware and the rest seem pretty negative. Seems it's a mixed bag at the moment so best to stick to the old firmware if you can I guess.

There's one benefit to this update, there is more detail in highlights. So for example if you look directly at the sun in some game with HDR standard you'll see a really bright sun but not much cloud detail whereas with this new HDR game mode the sun is very dull but you can see a great deal of detail that wasn't there before with the cloud patterns and such. The problem of course being that the OLED can't display all that detail at an appropriate brightness without clipping details due to its current limiting technology. Now prior to the recent firmware the HDR game mode for the C6/E6/G6 was pretty much in line with the other modes, it clipped the details for a more vibrant image, but for whatever unknown reason the recent firmware buggered up that balance for HDR game mode only. Now not only does it result in a very desaturated dim screen, it's also crushing blacks compared to the older implementation.

Some folks like the new implementation due to more detail, but frankly, they'd be the minority. The screen is about 50-75 percent dimmer now depending on the scene, it creates a very dull image and leaves a lot to be desired for, also of course one has to enable dynamic contrast to eliminate the crushed blacks by this new HDR game mode which has a whole list of drawbacks that make purists ill.

Now LG might be trying to play this of as deliberate, but I just don't think that seems to be the case. If this was done internally to reduce burn-in then we should also see this dim HDR mode being rolled out to the 2017 models and the B6, which so far they haven't done and I bet ya if they did that we'd be seeing a hell of a much bigger uproar. They took down the update in European regions with a customer service rep saying that they're aware of the problem and are working on a fix, and if this new version of the HDR game mode is so much better as they say then they'd be rolling it out across all the HDR modes not just the game mode. Furthermore, on top of all of that their response to this issue has been a clusterfuck of misinformation with a different answer per region. Canada's saying it was deliberate, UK's saying they're working on a fix, and Australia is saying that it should be effecting all the HDR modes including Dolby Vision. Oh, and of course this 'deliberate' change wasn't mentioned in the patch notes. Not even a 'made some slight adjustments to HDR game mode for more accurate colours' in there.

This big mess has pretty much ruined my gaming plans. I've held of from playing Mass Effect Andromeda hoping for a fix, and now I'm worried it ain't coming for Uncharted. HDR gaming is why I purchased this set man, so damn disappointing.

Also just to be clear the HDR game mode on the B6 is dimmer than the other modes, but nowhere near as dim as this new implementation of HDR in the C/E/G 2016 models which used to have a perfectly functioning HDR game mode. Stop confusing the problem peoples.

So you're using HDR bright, vivid or standard? Yeah that's nowhere near close to the input lag of Game mode. But a tip I got on another forum is that up the game brightness and still use HDR Game mode. I read that someone upped the brightness to max in Horizon Zero Dawn and it looked a lot better. Or enable dynamic contrast would also help a lot.

But it would be best if LG simply fixes it. Because there are games out there that don't have a brightness option. Not a whole lot anymore these days probably but Fallout 4 was one of them. But I don't think it ever received a HDR patch right? Only 4K for pro I believe.

Right now, I'm using HDR bright (Vivid mode is an abomination, haha) I've modified the settings to as closely match game mode as possible, and its seems provide all around best settings so far. I've notice some detail loss in bright areas sadly, but it seems less then the loss of detail to black crush in Game mode. Doesn't seem to be a 100 percent perfect HDR setting on the B6 sadly. :(

I've tried dynamic contrast in gamemode, but it seems to decrease the quality of HDR in general, so as long as i'm not playing something super twitchy in HDR, I think I'd rather deal with the extra few milliseconds of lag. also Netflix in HDR Game mode is almost unwatchable, so I'd much rather have settings that are "okay" for everything rather then have to miss with my TV settings eveytime I want to do something different on my xbox.

Hoping for another patch. lol

Quick question... Im planning to buy a 4K TV later this year. What is a good input lag range? Something between 25-35 is ok? Or at 35 the slow response is noticeable? I tend to play games like Halo 5 or Forza 6 a lot, games where input lag is critical IMO for a good experience. Any experiences?

30ms is equal to one frame of data so 30ish is absolutely fine, only the 0.5% of those playing professionally should worry about that one frame of data, I wouldn't sweat if the lag was in the 30ms range. <20ms would be market leading.

I'll look at it when I get home, but do you perhaps know specifically about what to do if the TV isn't connecting? That seems to be the only step plaguing myself and the person above this post.

I managed to downgrade successfully now. I was missing an appropriate response file from the "C:\LgDTVUpDater\zagotovki\local\2016\UH780, UH850-UH855, UH950-UH955, OLED E6, C6" directory. Couldn't find any firmwares I recognized in that folder though, so I created my own response file to use with firmware 04.31.05.

Popped the response file and the firmware file in the "htdocs" folder, and voila, smooth downgrade.

As a bonus I blocked snu.lge.com and su.lge.com in the firewall on my router, so now it no longer nags me for the 05.30.10 update when I turn on the TV. Yay!

Let me know if you want me to help you build a response file if you need it. Can probably use one of the ones supplied with the LGUpdater program, but I felt it safer to go with a firmware I had already installed previously.

You seem to know your stuff. I'm stuck on the IP stuff, can you make a more in-depth breakdown for the less advanced?

Here are some rough but hopefully useful instructions to downgrade to your firmware of choice:

1. Get the LgDTVUpDater_04_2017.zip program. I won't post a link here to avoid any trouble :) Google.

2. (Delete the "LgDTVUpDater" folder if you already set it up, that'll make it simpler)

3. Extract the zip to C:, so you end up with "C:\LgDTVUpDater"

4. Identify the firmware you want to downgrade to. You need the actual firmware file, which you can might be able to get from your countrys LGs support site at the moment. If not, hopefully you have it downloaded previously. ( I chose 04.31.05 as my target)

5. Copy the firmware to "C:\LgDTVUpDater\htdocs"

6. Follow the 3 first steps here to identify what your Response file should be named.

7. Go to "C:\LgDTVUpDater\zagotovki\local\2016". Identify your model from the folder list. For example, for C6, go to "UH780, UH850-UH855, UH950-UH955, OLED E6, C6"

8. Go into one of the folders in there. The firmware numbers there shouldn't matter, as we'll edit it to fit the firmware we're downgrading to later. I used "04_30_55_GB_" as my base.

9. Copy the file you find in there to "C:\LgDTVUpDater\htdocs". The file name for my C6 was "HE_DTV_W16M_AFADABAA".

10. Rename the file to whatever you came up with in step 6!

11. Open the file you just copied in a text editor like notepad.

12. You need to edit this file to match the firmware you have downloaded. Here's the file I ended up with for reference:

Code:
<RESPONSE><RESULT_CD>900</RESULT_CD><MSG>Success</MSG><REQ_ID>00000000008076692602</REQ_ID><IMAGE_URL>http://snu.lge.com/SWDownload.laf</IMAGE_URL><IMAGE_SIZE>892884989</IMAGE_SIZE><IMAGE_NAME>starfish-dvb-secured-m16-7.deua.m16-727-04.31.05-prodkey_usb_V3_SECURED.epk</IMAGE_NAME><UPDATE_MAJOR_VER>04</UPDATE_MAJOR_VER><UPDATE_MINOR_VER>31.05</UPDATE_MINOR_VER><FORCE_FLAG>Y</FORCE_FLAG><KE></KE><GMT>19 May 2017 14:24:34 GMT</GMT><ECO_INFO>01</ECO_INFO><CDN_URL>http://snu.lge.com:80/starfish-dvb-secured-m16-7.deua.m16-727-04.31.05-prodkey_usb_V3_SECURED.epk</CDN_URL><CONTENTS></CONTENTS></RESPONSE>

Things to pay attention to here:

  • <IMAGE_SIZE> should match the exact file size of the firmware. You can find it by right-clicking the firmware file and choosing Properties. Copy the bytes value like in this picture:

    Mrn8tKo.png

Remove the spaces after pasting it into <IMAGE_SIZE>
  • <IMAGE_NAME> should be the exact name of your firmware file.
  • <UPDATE_MAJOR_VER> should match the two first digits of the firmware version you're downgrading to, 04 in my case.
  • <UPDATE_MINOR_VER> should match the last 4 digits of the firmware version, plus the dot inbetween, 31.05 in my case.
  • <GMT> I entered the date the firmware file was created, you can find that in the properties of the firmware file as well. In my case it was 19 May 2017 14:24:34.
  • <CDN_URL> you need to add the filename of your firmware after "http://snu.lge.com:80/". In my case it was http://snu.lge.com:80/starfish-dvb-secured-m16-7.deua.m16-727-04.31.05-prodkey_usb_V3_SECURED.epk.

13. Save the file

14. Go to "C:\LgDTVUpDater" and double click on "start.bat"

15. Answer N to the first question and press Enter.

16. Look at the IP address at the start of the next question. Verify that this matches the local IP of your computer. (Here's how to find your local IP) If the address matches, answer Y and press Enter.

17. Repeat the previous step. If the IP matches, answer Y and press Enter.

18. Go to the internet settings on your TV, choose Ethernet or Wifi, select Edit, Uncheck "Set Automatically". Enter the Local IP of your computer into "DNS SERVER"

vKCmyxg.jpg

Click Connect. (It won't connect right now)

19. Go back to your PC and press Enter in the command window with yellow text. If you get any Firewall warnings, allow them all through the firewall.

20. Go back to the TV and verify that it connects to the internet (All 4 rings should be green in the window you entered the computer IP.

21. If it connects, go to General -> About This TV, and click "Check for updates". Hopefully it finds the firmware you want to downgrade to. Click "Install".

22. If all is well, it should start downgrading!

I recommend resetting the TV to Initial Settings after downgrading, to be sure it works as intended. I have no idea if this is needed, I just like to do it as an added precaution. Not doing it might be perfectly fine.

This was long and hard to read, but it should contain all you need to complete the downgrade successfully. Let me know if it works for you!

UPDATE: If you're running IIS on your Windows installation, you might have to perform the steps mentioned here. (Scroll down to the instructions regarding Windows 10 and W3SVC) Be sure to reverse the steps once you're finished.

Sure! Can you let me know which firmware you want to downgrade to, and which LG support country you get the file from? Then I can do an example write up based on that. The instructions that came with the program via Google Translate from russian were pretty hard to parse :)
I'm Australian and the firmware is 04.30.95, it was downloaded from Australian support for the E6 but is compatible with the C6 (my model). Help me out man!

That firmware file isn't available for download anymore, so you'll have to use the guide to create the response file yourself. I hope the instructions in my post above are clear enough.

hmm, I held off updating when it sounded like a bug, but I guess I'll bite the bullet and check out how it actually effects performance

Everyone please voice your displeasure to LG's customer service in your region. We need to ensure they understand it's broken.

Done.

Be interested to know what you think. I updated after reading that it was deliberate as well, but I really couldn't stand it.

I'm not to good with the actual terms here, but it looks like they've taken the entire HDR10 range (0-1000nits) and compressed it to fit inside the C6s 0-650 nits range. Very bright highlights still look like the max brightness if the panel. This is really just a hot take though :)

So is this new dim HDR mode firmware only for C/E owners? Do I have anything to worry about as a B6 owner?

B is a different SOC so completely different platform as a C/E, so you are okay for now, you should have Version 04.31.20 installed which was out in June. As long as you don't have 5.30.01, 05.30.02 or 05.30.10 installed, you should be fine,

I would turn off automatic updates in your settings, I would assume this update is coming to all OLEDs based on their steadfast wording.

Nothing is blown out on the contrast side of things but the peaks aren't super intense. Color looks incredible though. Your milage may vary!

EDIT: I should say that you should also reset the HDR Game Mode picture settings to make sure they're at default. Color is set at some value higher than 50 but supposedly it tracks better in that mode. If you try to bring it down the picture will look extremely desaturated.

So looks like you're OK with the latest HDR game mode. I haven't tested it yet.

My TV was on .02 and today updated to .10.

I'll try your suggestion and reset HDR game mode and see how it is.

Yeah no it's cool I still had an old copy on my laptop. Anyway just downgraded and tested HDR game mode, all good. Thank you so much you beautiful, beautiful, beautiful man. I would kiss you if I could. Oh, also why you suggest resetting to initial settings, I've got a lot of things set up and would rather not do that if I can?

No problem, glad to hear you got it working! When it comes to my recommendation, that's really just what I did to try to be as sure as I could that the downgrade didn't leave anything of the newer firmware behind. It's not based on any actual facts, so you should keep your settings if you've put a lot into them. Maybe do a reset if you see any weird behavior.

So how do I find older firmware to download? I'm on the US support page and it only has the latest firmware.

Hmm, now that's a problem. In the original Russian text, there is mention of an online way of downgrading, and a local way. My guide covers the local way, which requires the firmware file. The online way seems to just get the update from the LG server, but I'm not entirely sure how to build a correct response file in this case, as I don't know the name and size of the firmware. I'll look into it some more.

I'm a bit lost here

What is the good and bad firmware to use on européen c6v?

I can recommend 04.31.05 if that's available on your country's LG support site.

Do you have HDR Game mode with that firmware? If so I would stick with what you have for now, as the only thing added is HLG support which is not needed yet.
Yeah I have for few month already

I'm wondering where is that 5.30 firmware on the French official site. Even on the UK site it's the 4.31

5.30.10 is only available directly through the TV update function. LG might not have pushed it out in all regions yet. I'd turn off automatic updates on your TV and stay on 04.31.05 for now.

Ok thanks. Will do.
Even though I have dynamic contrast on for hdr games already as I though with off it was too dim looking. I'll stick to 4.31 until a new one arrives.
First time I see an update available on the tv and not online

So chances of having a proper HDR game mode by November for the Xbox One X are decreasing by the minute? For the B6 that is.

I've just got a 2017 model LG (49UJ670V) and I'm getting this dim HDR issue. Basically, HDR is unusable in 4K mode, it's about half as bright as it should be. From what I have read so far, the options are:

1) Roll back to an earlier firmware
2) Turn off HDR for now
3) Turn off 4K output for now

Are there any other options with this issue? Is it likely that we'll get a fix?

So how do I find older firmware to download? I'm on the US support page and it only has the latest firmware.

EDIT: I would go ahead and follow this post in your case, as he has a US E6P. The LgDTVUpDater version linked there comes with US firmware 04.30.95, and the proper response file. Just update IP addresses as he mentions in the post, and you should be golden.

lol, that customer service page I linked to previously made Forbes.

While I prefer HDR standard to the darker HDR game due to the higher peak brightness, LG is correct in the sense that HDR game mode do in fact add more details i brighter scenes due to the better contrast. Just look at the sun in games (or the star on the mass effect screen) att it is clear that you see more details in HDR game.

This big mess has pretty much ruined my gaming plans. I've held of from playing Mass Effect Andromeda hoping for a fix, and now I'm worried it ain't coming for Uncharted. HDR gaming is why I purchased this set man, so damn disappointing.

My personal solution to the problem is to use HDR game with dynamic contrast set to medium in 30 fps games (and increase color to 60 compensate for washed out colors) and use HDR standard in 60 fps games (where lag is less of a problem). Mass effect andromeda in 60 fps, 1800p, HDR standard on pc looks insane and gives you the best balance between image quality and lag (dolby vision looks best but the lag is too high in 4k/30 mode, HDR game mode lowest lag but the peak brightness is too low). Currently, replaying the game for the second time and my jaw drops in every scene. HDR in mass effect looks way better than horizon.

Also posted this in another thread but this one seems like it's more likely people would know so posting it here too, hoping that is all right:

Very close to getting a lg e6 imported.. Anything I should know? Is the image noisy? Are the blacks very crushed?
Is the input lag noticable? In game mode of course. Coming from TV with 16-17 ms input lag so I dunno.

Also, how are the risks of burn in, or dead pixels?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Also, can you choose just to upgrade to a specifik firmware? And are there upsides to the Borked firmware, other than hlg?

This is true, I tried the Uncharted 4 boat level and the sand was perfectly detailed in HDR game mode, whereas it was just a white blob in HDR standard.

Everything looked better to be honest.

I'm starting to believe that HDR game mode is not broken, it's just not what we expected to be and we are jumping to conclusions too quickly.

I don't understand why they won't simply let the user choose between HDR Game Bright and HDR Game Accurate. Seems like that would be an easy way to make everyone happy.

Have you guys tried gaming in regular HDR mode? I'm not sure what the latest lag/response time figures are but it doesn't feel massively different between HDR Game and HDR Bright to me, but then I've always been less susceptible in general.

I actually played with the settings under HDR Bright yesterday and am going to use that for Uncharted when it comes out in 2 weeks.

vivid is...well...colorful and super sharp. I guess you can play with it and make it look "meh". It's funny though, these vivid modes are known for jacked up color and having Dynamic Contrast at high and now we are told to put it to high on Game Mode, ridiculous.

I actually have to hold my hand up and say I was underestimating the difference between brightness of HDR Game and regular HDR modes. Perhaps it has dimmed further in another update and I've not noticed it. HDR Bright is retina searing though (for an OLED) and I'd rather game in that mode and put up with the added lag, especially for a 30fps game like the new Uncharted. Even The Last of Us didn't feel bad in 60fps mode.

It's so dim I'm already anticipating CES 2018 to choose my next upgrade.

I never had much of an issue with regular HDR modes on my 2016 850v before the HDR Game option was added.

Am quite happy playing Forza Horizon 3 in the regular HDR modes.
