Are the items that you gamble for (aka the Metal King garb) better or worse than the items you can craft on your own?

In past DQ games, MK items are almost always superior to anything and everything.

Metal equipment from the casino is really good if you can get it early but it's not the best equipment in the game. You can get better recipes to craft and often, you'll want the benefits of other gear for some characters instead of just the raw defense of metal equipment.

A big change that I didn't mention is that spells are much better. The change over to Attack and Healing magic stats from INT and MND in addition to specific buffs for them have made them much stronger than in previous games and often equivalent or even more damage than the physical attacks. So you want to get those stats instead of just defense if you want to deal max damage or you can sacrifice it for HP and defense.

Well, that change first showed up in DQ9. And is obviously in DQ10.
Prior to DQ9, spells just did a set amount of damage. i.e. Mera would always do ~10-20 damage. Merazoma would always do ~180-200 damage. You can't modify it. Wisdom did not affect magic damage, but only chance to land status effects.

For what it's worth, I didn't mind the old way. The earlier DQ games have some of the tightest balance with the lowest numbers I've ever seen, and I really appreciate that.

Lagging behind a lot of folks here. Just finished up the quest at Nagyumun Village.
Sad story for sure. Having said that the shopkeeper in the underwater city made me smile.

I've been playing the 3DS version on and off on my train journey to work. Oddly I'm finding it much harder than the PS4 version. Find myself wiping out a lot, might be playing sloppily on account of having done a lot of stuff on PS4 already and thinking 'no bother' but it's been interesting noting the differences. What's astonishing though is how similar both versions are as well. Development and tuning both versions must have been hell.

Okay so I am taking a break from the story to do some monster hunting to complete the book.

I probably am not doing this right again but let me try...

I am trying to find the panda in the
volcano area
and the one wiki says it appears with the bear enemy (I missed it the previous time) although it does not appear for me. Is it more common elsewhere?

As for the Metal King Helmet, I see people not mentioning a passive effect it has. Can't check it myself, since I didn't even see it in game, but from what I read it guarantees a chest drop at the end of the battle.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, since I don't want to spread misinformation.

It definitely appears with bear enemies. I got it during my first random encounter with them there iirc.
I'm not sure you know about the 転生 (legendary monster I think this was translated) system - the monster you're looking for is a legendary version of the Bear enemy and those rarely appear when battling their regular versions.
The only way to make this easier is to have a "きせきの" piece of a equipment (I think there's a ring and a choker?), which makes the chances of encountering rare monsters higher.

I got the
Moon Chimera
in a battle at random and I got the
Type G
quite easily as well. This thing just seems to be elusive to me.

Thank you by the way. Unfortunately, I am not seeing the item you speak of listed in the Wiki I am using.

You got lucky then,
Type G
took me like 40 minutes iirc ;)
The items you're looking for are きせきのネックレス and きせきのゆびわ by the way.

Okay I figured out why I do not have those items and one is related to the horse racing. There is still no clear answer yet as to why I cannot do the
Platinum Cup
and then the
Black Cup
. I cleared the
Gold Cup
both times no problem.

Edit: Post game perhaps?

I think those unlock as the story goes. Don't know about
Platinum
, since the first time I've visited the horse racing place was after I cleared the main game, but you definitely
unlock Black races in the post game
.

I am in the
final dungeon
and the highest I completed was
gold
which annoys me. Oh well.

So, does anyone else hope against hope they'll do the right thing during localization and change the
adventure book to imperial scrolls of honor?
It would require a graphical change, but they need to do it to keep the nostalgic quality of that scene.

So I played 1-6. On 8 right now. Is 11 basically the same thing as the others? Could i play it and just try to guess what's going on story-wise?

I just finished the post game and boy the shivers during these final scenes.

Moving into spoilers ending included...

the post game was fun if a bit of a grind. Fighting the same bosses wasn't that great honestly but the extra dungeon was fun enough and the boss encounters had just the right amount of difficulty.

Last boss was surprisingly easy with the hero, Greig, Veronica and Zenya. Like way easier than I exptected. I was lvl 81 so maybe I was slightly overl levelled. Was fun rebuilding Ishi Villiage.

All the characters were nicely fleshed out too I thought. I thought Sylvia was great and it never seemed like the game was making a joke out of the character. I can't say I'm an expert on it though so perhaps there are things people might not like about it. Martina was the only character that felt under developed to me.

I'm guessing we won't be getting remakes of 1-3 considering they are coming out today as ports.

I really really enjoyed it and I can't describe the feeling watching the ending for this one. Really feel quite emotional.

Are there a lot of trophies in the PS4 version? Anyone Platinum? :)
Platinum isn't that hard honestly. I got most of the trophies while just playing a game and I could probably grab the platinum in another few hours after beating the post game (getting all costumes would take the longest, I think).

I'm still trucking away. Very late game:
I just got the whale and I'm going after the materials to make the sword
. Much less time to play post-vacation but I'll get there. I could not believe how quickly
probably my least-valued character quickly became by far the best during the Ramuda event
, also.

Just defeated I won't even put the name but the
third to last boss
. It was tough but compared to others that I complained about, it could have been much much worse. Even though I have complained about some boss fights, there's no boss fight I hated the design of. They were all cool. There were many worlds that were so beautiful and I wanted the PS4 version badly but I didn't have a lot of money so I just stuck with the 3DS. I do not regret that decision.

I did not get X because I could not play online. I recall reading where you had to sign up to a Japanese network and it might reject American IP addresses so you needed a proxy or something. I was not willing to do that especially when I had IX where I could just download quests from any free Wi-Fi connection to my DS Lite.

Now going back to IX (although VIII 3DS was released in the summer of 15 in Japan and I imported that), my memories are mainly just repeatedly going through grottos and rushing through as fast as I could to get the materials needed to make the best items. I also did not like that it saved before you made the item so that you needed to try again. For this reason and the fact that the main story was kind of short, IX was one of my least favorite DQ games. Watching videos of people facing the bosses at Level 99 was pretty cool but I never did that. Perhaps if I was better at it, it would be different.

Pardon the short essay, it's probably based off the amount of steam I needed to burn from playing the game for most of today.

I defeated the
Ice Witch
yesterday and have
one more orb
left to collect.
Am I nearing the half the half way point yet?

Haha I also found my first metal slime and it gave me 10000 exp xD.

I've been depending some more time in the casino now I've finished the 3Ds version and still waiting on a Jackpot. I spent about an hour just blasting the a button and nothing!

Wish I had some of the luck everyone's been talking about, seems like it's popping for everyone here but me!

Took me forever to figure out how to get the pre-order vests where you can equip them. And by now they seem pretty useless, at least the EXP one :p

I kinda wish the game used more kanji in places, I'm pretty rubbish with only hiragana.

Trying to get better equipment before the
final two boss fights
.

I definitely need something better for my Hero because he is still wearing the
purple peacock outfit
.

I've been looking at some footage of the street pass stuff, man that's really cool, I wish it was on the PS4 version too.

I'm looking for more footage but I was able to see something from III and VIII.

Hey Aeana, do the CG cutscenes play when on 2D mode?

It's Dragon Quest. The question should not be "Which version of the game is superior?" The question should be... "Which games are Dragon Quest superior to?" and in the case of a lot of games out there, I'd say more than half of them. : )

Prophane33

In what way superior? Aren't the games exactly the same and just the graphics differ?

Personally, I prefer the 3DS exclusive content to the PS4 exclusive content. Being able to visit legacy locations and perform quests in old locations/related to old characters, as well as switch between a 3D or 2D mode is great. Went through a Dragon Quest VII dungeon the other day, so they aren't all just towns or one scene locations.

I'm definitely getting and playing both versions, those differences in gameplay and content really interest me and the opinions on the game sound really good eitherwise.

So hopefully they will bring both versions to the west.

all I did was just keep defending until they eventually made it.

It's easier later when you have more members and can swap them out, because zone doesn't decay when the character isn't in the active party.

Man, all these reviews and impressions of the game have me super hyped to play it!

You think I could find some enjoyment playing this without understanding Japanese? I'd probably use a translator for the menus. I know, I know...its an RPG and its all about story but I may not get the chance to play it in 2018 if the world ends =P.

Or if any of you guys live in Washington state and wouldn't mind coming over and translating while I play I'll buy pizza! ;)

I am using a wiki and Google. Having played previous DQ games helps when it comes to knowing what the characters are for what spells or skills as well as items.

So does anyone know what the last ???? spot on the recipe book list before post-game is? It's the only one I'm missing. I'm guessing the list expands in post-game because I doubt there are absolutely no new recipe books in the post-game

It's the one right below 戦姫の肖像

When I get home from the office in a few hours I could check the guide for more details (though it is incomplete in some parts as the full guide comes out at the end of the month), but otherwise this Japanese wiki has a list. I'm not that far in the game myself yet (only around 35 hours in), so I can't be of help.

Apparently you need the ultimate key for it.

...I don't know if I missed the key or if that recipe is just mistakenly included in the main-game recipes for some reason

IT'S FINALLY HERE!
