Dragon Quest 11 (JP) |OT| whynotboth.gif

I'm sure this has been covered, and I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but just checking: free movement battle system doesn't really add any specific benefits in terms of location and proximity to enemies right? It's just another way to engage with battles, but essentially the same as fixed in terms of the actual outcomes of battle?

Beat the final boss last night.

Overall this took me a little under 80 hours. Did
46
quests, a little of the bowgun game, and took some time to gather materials and forge equipment. Starting post game content now which will probably add another 20 or so hours.

After this I can move on to playing the 3DS version full time. I really like this game so I might just do all the quests in that too even though I said I wouldn't, but I'll definitely do the 3DS exclusive content.

Attempted to fight the
last two boss fights
and lost. I need to level up more and can do so easily because
I have gotten lucky killing Metal Kings
. I also need better equipment because I have yet to craft anything at all and I am burning a hole in my inventory. What should I make first?

Did you do the quest where you get a
Sage's Stone
(I believe it's from a quest anyway)? Like most DQs that have it, it makes the final boss pretty trivial. Give it to a character who's fast enough to always go first or second but has enough HP to survive most attacks (Martina would be the best in this game's case, but there's others it would work for) and use it every 1-2 turns, with the others as support. Besides that buffs are good, and equipment wise the final dungeon has recipes for a lot of good stuff, especially if you have a lot of metal fragments available.

Nope, no impact on battle.

Holy slimes.

So I imported a copy of the 3DS version.

Followed the steps in the link that was provided earlier to set it up to play out of region games.

And I'm playing the game.

Granted, I don't know a lick of Japanese, so this is likely one of the most ill advised notions I've taken, but I'm playing the game!

The furigana are tiny as hell and pretty damn hard to read.

this is awesome though.

Edit:
Obviously I won't understand the story, but it will be fun to at least play it on a mechanic level and see how far I can get and pick up.

Now that you mention it, this might serve as a really good PSA. In most other DQ games, it's either extremely obvious that you got that item, or you have to go out of your way to get it on purpose. In this one, a quest has you go find it out in the world, and then the quest NPC says you can keep it and also gives you a recipe. As a result, people who aren't actually reading the text may never notice that they got to hang onto it.

EDIT: I should probably edit the item in question in. It's called
賢者の石(けんじゃのいし)

Not that it doesn't have its use in battle because it does but by the time I get it, it just sits in my inventory. When I got it in VIII the first run when I imported it for PS2, I recall actually selling it.

Yeah it does a decent job but still not perfect. It works well enough to navigate through the menus and get the gist of whats happening with the story. But not really fun to play through the game looking through your phone's camera for an extended period of time.

Oh totally. But will be a great way to learn the menu's and see whats going on. Its crazy stuff. Putting this kind of stuff in something like smart glasses could be mind blowing.

I am ready to go to the final dungeon. With that said, I'm pretty bummed.

I just made an awesome sword as part of a cutscene with the ~power of friendship~ and all of that, and it's a one-handed sword. My hero is specialized in two-handed swords, and they just do way more damage than 1h. The sword is way weaker than the two-handed sword I have. This was very anti-climactic for me.

I'm more concerned about the skills. 全身全霊斬り is absurdly good. I'm sure つるぎのまい is good but I don't have enough SP to get it at this point.

lol a postgame boss just fucked me over hard despite having best equipment and everything xD. First time the game killed me actually.

Edit:
Talking about the very last boss. Nizuzerufa, dude isn't hard actually I just forgot after all that preparing that I had to use the story hero sword.

Awesome, I haven't seen that yet. I love the text bubble: "I not bad slime! I wireless controller!" Which is a reference to most non-enemy slimes in the series, who usually tell you that they aren't bad.

I had the DQ8 one. Was a pain to use. How's this?

I just made
Liquid Metal Slime Armor
without effing it up. I was stunned. That was easier than I thought at least on this time around.

Finally finished with the plat. Just and amazing game it was such a fun journey to go on.
All I'm going to say is I hope they can reuse a lot of the assets and make more in this generation. Especially a console DQ monsters that would be suuuuuper sick.

Also curious to hear impression from people that have a longer history with the games. How did 11 make you guys feel. I don't really have a super long story with the franchise having not even played a couple of them. But I can only imagine that 11 hits even harder when you maybe grew up on this franchise.

As I go through the odds and ends in this game, I am honestly starting the countdown to Dragon Quest XII around mid-late 2021 or 2022 at the latest. I wonder if the PS4 Pro's graphics were what Yuji Horii had in mind when he wanted a full 3D RPG. I mean what would the next standard be in? 4K? 8K? Higher?

Maybe you remake Dragon Quest 1-3 again especially 1 and you add bonus content this time. Perhaps make things more difficult and allow the character to go higher than 30. Maybe allow Princess Laura as a party member to have a second game where husband and wife fight evil.

Or... maybe the creators will do something basic and just make a DQXI expansion pack along the lines of Diablo II: Lord of Destruction. Add in the bosses from previous games along with items and recipes you can get. DQIX was great to include previous bosses but that was all the way back in 2009.

I may have posted this before but I checked my posts and I never did. I first started with DW1 (not DQ) when I was 5. I walked around the throne room, I opened up the chests but didn't think to use the key I had on the door. Later on I played it when I was 12 and eventually defeated the Dragon Lord at Level 23 or 24 maybe. No Metal Slime killing either. If I was lucky to even encounter one back then, it ran away in 1-2 rounds. I then remember playing Dragon Warrior II in Funcoland as it was known back then but I never bought it because a used cart was $25 in 1998 with no box or manual.

Shoot I can recall buying DQII off of eBay for $25 or so with box, manual, and everything included. I see some listings even cheaper now. Back in 2005 when I turned 18, my mom bought me a digital camera. It wasn't a great one but it was she could afford. It was a Canon Powershot A450 or something. Maybe $150? I wanted to experience how Japanese players played the first two games in 1986 and 1987 respectively so I would save my game, take a picture of my CRT TV and use that the next time I played.

Anyway, to end this story. I LOVE... this game.

No, the ammount of text is much larger than in previous games, unless they started in January or so I really wouldn't bet on it, specially if you want voice acting.

I feel like save the remakes for handhelds. I kinda just want them to do new entries for now :-x but maybe I'm alone on this.
Not sure how I feel about big dlc/addons either. I can maybe do with cosmetic equipment tied into a quest and some non story content ala dq8 3ds the boss rush thing postgame but anything story I'm honestly just happy with how it all ended don't feel the need for something that expands that.

Super ending spoiler
Anyone knows what the very last scene was with the boy in the bed. Which entry was that referencing? Also was the guy in red armor a tease for the next game hinting at corrupted holy dragon as antagonist?

Its a recreation of the opening from Dragon Quest III, the game most closely related to this one.

Not sure at what you mean with Nelsen, but Dragon Quest doesn't do story sequels aside from the first 3 games, I doubt they'll go back to it now.

Yeah I guess that makes sense. Oh well at least gives more time to play other DQ games before this comes out and from what hear DQVII is especially long game.

I don't think I'm talking about Nelsen I'm referencing the guy shortly after the sequence where the dragon talks about his possible corruption and making the hero promise him to take up the sword again. Then it flashes to I think a new guy who wears red armor and it feels like he is the next generation unless he is from previous game although I don't remember a main entry ever featuring someone looking like that.

I edited my post above to talk about my history with Dragon Quest but I do have to say that every time I click on a spoiler from one of you guys, I never regret it.

Even though it's completely different, I speak also as a fan of pro wrestling (excluding Japanese wrestling which is usually decent) which when I check spoilers there I always end up disappointed.

Edit:
Platinum Horse Race
is available post game or can I do it before?

ooooh, I think I get what you mean.

the guy on the cliff who picks up the sword of the hero right? The one in the blue armor with horns?

That the hero of the original game and the dragon is referencing the story of that game, its a wink wink moment for fans.

I didnt get it because the entire speech of the dragon was in kanji, so I coyldnt read all of it.

It is indeed as you say just rewatched the thing. I think my tired mind played a trick on me for some reason my brain thought he was wearing red armor but it was just the cape.

What Holundrian is referring to is the
lone hero picking up the sword of heroes to go to the castle of another demon lord, potentially the corrupted holy dragon as he mentions in their talk. It's a reference to DQI and was probably included to further DQXI's connection to DQIII in design and concept.

So in anticipation of DQXI I want to play VIII 3DS. Do the DS Dragon Quest games stand the test of time? I'm fine with random battles, but do they lack a lot of QoL elements? Are the stories interesting? Are they bloated (aka 60+ hours just for the main story)? I've already decided to skip on VII since a 100+ hour story with tons of backtracking really doesn't appeal to me

Yes they do, and are fantastic games that are briskly paced. And DQ IV and V are less than 30hr games. DQIV I usually complete under 20. Definitely give them a shot.

I know VII is a massive time sink but it's worth it. Give it a shot later.

After some sleep I gotta say I'm still addicted to continuing the journey a bit more and going to try complete the book. Maybe I'll even grind out the full skill panels for the last 4 people. World is just so fun to be in.

What do I have to do to get
+3 equipment
?

Do I need a recipe? Do I just take the item I made from basic materials and mix them with more? Thanks.

That's hardly a spoiler, it's a system that the game explains when it introduces smithing.
One way to get a +1/2/3 equipment is to get lucky while making it. Critical hits while crafting have a chance of making the bar stop at the arrows, like demonkaze mentioned.

There's another way - it's the last option in the crafting menu, called うちなおし (reforge). When you make an item and don't fail (black smoke, しっぱい) you get orbs (うちなおしの宝珠) which you can use for reforging. Even when you fail reforging, you don't lose the current upgrades, so try away. Later in the game (at the
medal school
) you can also buy the orbs for 100 gold per orb.

Ah okay thank you. I attempted to make
LMS Armor +3
and I messed up so I turned off my 3DS but now both files I have aren't allowing me to smite at all. Is this a real time clock kind of thing I have to wait for to pass sort of like Pokemon with the watering of berries?

Edit: Nope, I just moved to another location and it works now. Strange.

You just have to wait 5 minutes of in-game time before you can forge again if you reset right after a forge.

Kind of an annoying system because 5 minutes isn't really enough to discourage people from doing it so it's just a pointless inconvenience.

It's enough of an inconvenience that it made me prefer just reforging via the うちなおし currency. + you can buy them infinitely for 100 gold the piece with max reforges costing 30 orbs/3000 gold it's kinda better than waiting for 5 min.

I only have 500k gold. I don't deposit my money in banks, I save often, and dying is unacceptable in my eyes. This is probably because I played so many RPGs such as FF where if you died, you went back to your last save point.

The maximum amount of concentration points which you can use while forging increases with your level, so trying to make endgame equipment at lower levels is hard.

Also remember that even if you "fail" making an item, the only downside is that it doesn't become a +1/2/3 right off the bat. I usually made the item anyway and try reforging later.

I think the most I had at once during my playthrough was 200-300k and I was able to buy everything I wanted anyway. There are no money sinks in the game (if you save scum or are lucky at the casino), so even spending 50k on orbs shouldn't be a big deal.

Basically this. That said there is only one huge money sink(980k gold) in the game though where I had to farm by stealing a 30k worth item a few times.
It's one of Martina's cosmetic change armors purchasable in Daharne.

Oh wow, I think I missed that one. Still, ぶんしん -> Steal with Camus probably makes farming money trivial.

Okay I got a +2 after failing four times (only got a +0 or plain old armor). How much better is a +3? Is it really a HUGE difference?

you can look up the differences for each item level (0, +1, +2, +3) in the book under the alchemy forge category and navigating to the item. I don't really know how big the differences are from +2 to +3 but +0 to +3 seems big at times. Meteorite Bracer goes from +100 speed to +200(Reason I don't want to say huge in this case is I don't know the formulas surrounding speed).
