No Man's Sky - Atlas Rises |OT| Nada, Polo and you no longer fly solo

Forgive me for saying this but I never believed their, "confusing players" claim. Orbits are somewhat predictable. There's nothing confusing about it. It can even be a toggle on/off option. I anecdotally guarantee you most players would turn it on.
Why? It's a common thing in other games with features that players found confusing, or didn't notice, or thought was a bug, so said features are cut or reduced. Ultima Online had a hugely ambitious life simulation that was cut because test players never even noticed it

You would spend soooo much time trying to find planets and flying to them in space. You realized how far you'd have to fly to go between planets on opposites sides of a star? It would just add more tedium and space flight time.

Yes, all of the above. They made the game more grindy and slower. don't play this game if you want to play other games and have a life and a job. I'm not happy with the update. You have to power your farms with isotopes now, every single planter has to be powered and recharged. Expect 20 hours of gameplay to get that new ship. How the fuck is this improvement? Add endgame, don't just stretch out what you already have, I don't see how adding tedium improves the game.... This sucks, I was so stoked for this update.
I think I'm still net positive... the new biomes are pretty nice.

I found a desert planet that has this canyon rivers (well, idle bodies of whatever but they look like canyon rivers) and the sexy new higher LOD cactuses... Gave me quite the pause.

And I think the new Star System Economies has a lot of potential. There are so many types... Mining, Ore Extracting, Ore Processing, Prospecting, Metal Processing, etc (just the ones related to 'mining' that I've seen). And there's so many new Economies trade items... I had a ship full of like 5-6 different types of new items designed for 'Trading' economies. So, kinda cool from a loop or gameplay POV; just hope it doesn't make cash even slower than before.

Not sure about the new missions yet. Similar to Freighters, mostly just seem like window dressing for previous gameplay loops. E.g. freighters are basically just art set pieces with some vaults to dig up; the missions I've done are all just basic actions from before (e.g. fly to X trade network pod to drop off item and return to space station).

But variety does help the loop. Kinda simple/boring to do 10-20 times but adding in 1-2 missions every 5 hours does help break up and add variety to the gameplay loot, so while I'm not sure they're going to be a main activity I do, doing a few here and there could be nice variety.

Looking forward to building a gas mining unit too still haha. I mean, I'm sure it'll be no different than an AMU but still kinda nice we're getting some variety for roleplay flavour.

So, mostly net positive I think... hopefully the bugs get ironed out and all the needless new sinks are balanced by better rewards. Kinda sad they went and reset all my favorite planets, too -- I spent probably over 100 hours choosing my 3-4 favorites and build up my bases, mining waypoints, etc lol :( lost so much roleplay/base building attachment. Helps though that the new desert biomes are gorgeous, and the home planet I always had hoped to find (sandy desert with better canyons and plains) is probably now in the game somewhere.

Just downloaded it. Interesting to see how it compares to launch which is the last time I played. I'm glad Hello Games didn't throw in the towel, and are trying to make this game great.

I can't believe how megaton looking around in the ship before getting out is. For whatever reason it adds so much more immersion.

I wish I knew how to look around my ship with M&KB because at the moment I'm switching between controller and keyboard when I get in and out of my ship.

I wish it would do that on the trading platforms too. The cockpit on my ship is high up and, for some reason, with this new update the auto eject keeps throwing me clear of the platform!

Edit: ugh, read your post wrong, but the point stands. Auto eject is silly.

Will definitely download and play this tonight. And since I didn't get to experience the last two updates, there will be a lot for me to do here :D Will start a new save, Can't wait!!!

Is it just me or do I need to keep holding down R2 now in order to keep speed up while flying? Otherwise the ship keeps slowing to down to 0.

These bugs people are experiencing mainly affect people with old saves, right? I'm planning on starting a new game, so I should be fine...? Or should I still wait for fixes?

Found this bit of information over at the NMS Reddit.

Apparently there is a unannounced addition to the game that I didn't see in the patch notes. Scan rocks people!

If you scan rocks, crystals etc you learn the secondary element. When you then harvest said thing, you get a few bits of the secondary thing along with the primary thing. Why just collect iron when you can get free aluminum and copper too?

This works on trees and things too! Found a plant with 'meaty roots' which produced Mordite when mined.

Whaaaa?! I heard there were secondary elements but had no idea that's how you found them.

Finally updated. I like everything so far..but...I just found a perfect home planet after searching for hours. Hours. It was perfect. Lush greens everywhere, tons of tree, awesome atmosphere, purple and colorful flowers, huge red oceans...it was amazing. I didn't build much, but I did do a little.

Then comes the update. My base is on the other side of the planet now, literally, thanks to a beacon I left in the original location. Also, the planet is a desert planet now. This is the first time I've ever been legitimately mad at HG for their work. I know it's not the end of the world, and I'm already looking for new planets. Again. And I'm pretty much over it by now. But it still hurts dammit. But with so many updates, and ao much going on, some things gotta break.

Oh well, I love all the other updates. Just glad I didn't go crazy building up my new, and now old base.

The colors....

The formations...This planet could be broad daylight and you'd still have climb to actually see the sun. First time that's happened on a planet since I bought it day one. Even saved the coordinates for it.

Then based on these replies I realize I could be wrong. I would still like to see a simulation though. Even if it's only applied when you are "local". Like when you land in a star system and only those simulate orbits.
That would be 🔥

Hit a real pain in the ass bug. Trying to get to a Holo-terminal for the Traveler mission and the planet it's on doesn't load as I get through its atmosphere. First time that's ever happened.

It's a change that now allows hovering in place or coming to a complete stop in space. You can now mine resource deposits from in your ship too so they probably added it because of, or partly because of that.

You have to remember as well that their goal in the game was to make it feel like you were stepping into a 70's Sci-Fi book cover. Having other planets visible from the surface is a massive part of that, as is the ability to point to one and soon after been stood where you were pointing a minute ago. Orbiting planets would take that away unless they all orbited in a cluster, which would defeat the point.

That's not to say the idea of orbits is bad, just that I think it compromises too much of the vision even without player concerns.

So is this game good now?

Yes. Unlike the vanilla games where everything is kind of open up in the beginning, now there's a quest log and sense of progression where you have to do this in order to do that. Almost every items are being utilized whereas in vanilla, you just sell them.

Have you tried warping to another star system, scanning for a Holo-terminal, then go to that one instead? I did that (for a different reason) and it seems it's not picky about which Holo-terminal you use.

I dunno... this seems silly. I'm not doing any of the things you are talking about being made more tedious at all in the first place, and am still able to play and enjoy the game. I mean maybe they nerfed plant farming too much and should make it easier/more generous again, I can't really speak to that, but it's not like there's a set path that you need to be progressing toward to "succeed" at this game, you can do whatever you want in whatever bouts of play you want. choose your level of tedium :p
So what are the dangers of exploring in this now?

A nice list of ways to die in survival mode would be appreciated.
Hmm I mean, all the ways you can die are still the same... there can be aggressive creatures, heat/cold/toxicity/radiation hazards you need to recharge your suit to withstand, sometimes the sentinels (robot police) will go after you depending on your behavior, in space you can be attacked by pirates... you can also crash your ship into mountains now it seems haha.
Also once you have a ship, can you just fly to the center, or do you need to upgrade your ship multiple times to make it.

Thanks.
You never don't have a ship. you start with one that needs minor repairs. That ship is nowhere near capable of making it to the center of the galaxy in a practical amount of jumps, and rather than counting on upgrading it enough to make it you will likely make at least a couple if not many trades up to better ships altogether before really setting out on that journey in a serious way.

I can't believe how megaton looking around in the ship before getting out is. For whatever reason it adds so much more immersion.
yeah it's good stuff. I like the weather effects on your cockpit quite a bit (at least on my ship).Good opportunity to decide if you're really happy with where you landed too, haha.

surface mining with the phase beam from your ship is fucking sweet on that note, if you're on a planet with big pillars or "eggs" of a resource you want definitely try this out

I haven't played this since the second week after release. I got to the center of the galaxy and called it quits. I over enjoyed my experience of the game. I have not been keeping up with the updates at all.

In your opinion is there any reason for me to go back and start playing it again? I kind of have the itch.

Still in the beginner ship and was only on one planet with rain. Are you saying there's rain effects on the cockpit now? I heard it but don't recall seeing it.

It's gotten better, I still think the galactic map is somewhat confusing, disorienting, and tricky to navigate.

For instance, custom way points still need work. Can I clear one I mistakenly assigned?

When brought up the map I had an Atlas terminal detected and shown on the Atlas path, just a couple of jumps away. For some reason I thought I should mark it as a custom way points just in case. Now the Atlas Path filter shows "no Atlas terminal detected" and I can't even jump closer to terminal (now a custom waypoint).

This is all too confusing and/or poorly designed and tested.

For those of you who've tried missions, are all of them in the same system as the board, or are there some that require warping to another system?

have tried a few of them. One of the cargo delivery missions required me to warp to another system right next to the system I was in

I never "finished" the game when it first came out but i put like 40 hours or so into it. The new update in general is awesome. Better and more textures. Planets don't look like complete garbage when you approach from space. I haven't even done much else in the game yet, but it just looks more like the final product they envisioned in that first trailer.

The game was always good. It just the subsequent updates made it better and fleshed out a lot of the features with the inclusion of base building, freighters, and land vehicles.

Atlas Rises just expands further on that with even more additions with a improved story, a pseudo-multiplayer thing.

The new ways to upgrade your suit are nice separating tech upgrades and inventory slots into their own thing.

Although needing materials to unlock containers might be least favorite thing and may increase the grind, but getting money has never been easier and the costs of ships seemed to be lowered.

Reporting again:

So, I moved my base to another planet and all of the technicians appeared there. However, it's impossible to interact with them. "I should better let them get on with blabla"

Teleporting to my previous base does not work.

One thing I really like in the update is how much darker the planets can get. They also seemed to have done something about the lighting and shadows which allows for much darker environments which is pretty awesome.

not like rain on the glass unfortunately, but just if there's extreme weather, heat, cold, toxic clouds, you can see it (visually) before getting out and "feeling"/reading the effects on the UI.

Anyone? Some people were saying you should wait for the bugs to be fixed before starting.

And the way the camera pans in the galactic map when I'm in Free Explore and want to accurately jump to a specific system, and I lose context of my direction. Arghhhhhh!

Who thought it would be a good idea to rely on directions when you're a 3D map, and your surroundings are sense with star systems?

that's weird... maybe try switching on and off of the atlas path mission in your log?
