Neo Geo games coming to Nintendo Switch

Yeah, Hori has been pushing their own shit lately. Even in the premium VLX sticks.

My bad, you are quite right. I actually have a the PS4 Kuro VLX and whilst I swapped the stick and buttons out straight away heard pretty good things about the Hayabusa range, especially the buttons which are meant to be a real step up from the Kuro's.

Really thats the great thing about arcade sticks, if you dont like anything its very easy to swap everything over to your preference.

I just noticed KoF2000 on the Japanese eshop. Don't think I have seen it mentioned here though. Are we expecting it to pop up on NA eshop tomorrow? I'm probably going to get it anyway since I got 98 and 99 already. But how is it?

2000 is really good!

I got Metal Slug 2 the other day, I remember thrashing this one in the arcades back in the day. But boy I dont remember the epic slow downs like the switch version is experiencing.

Also, I got KoF 99 and enjoy playing through it, somewhat. Im finding the joycons difficult to pull moves and combos with, and was wondering if its any better using the pro controller?

then you remember it wrong because the arcade original has some of the worst slowdowns of any arcade game. seriously, they are extremely severe

Look forward to hearing your thoughts on the stick

Will be happy to share them but this is honestly my first arcade stick purchase so I am not that knowledgeable on them. Figured it was time seeing as I have all these awesome games on the Switch and it's PC compatible. Should be arriving today so I will post when I get a chance to really mess with it.

Skimmed a playthrough of KOF 2k yesterday. This was SNK's last in house KOF, right?

Man, I really don't care for some of the backgrounds in this one at all. Fighting in nasty places with cg propellers and vent fans. Doesn't feel like a KOF tournament. Is there a story reason behind this?

I think that KOF 2000 overall has good backgrounds, despite the fairly small number and a couple that are a little too brown for my liking (construction site and the wharf - which also looks slightly "off" in the transition between shallow water and the ground). The couple of bad ones are rather poor, but the good ones are top notch.

My highlights:
* Aquarium stage - love this one, to me it's a downright iconic KOF stage with that manatee in the background.

* Desert/Pyramid stage - love this one too, so simple and clean and the change from the sandstorm in round 1 to a calm blue sky in round 2 is just great.

* Korean shopping street - great stage here too, true "street fighting" and nicely detailed, the mix of neon and the reflective puddles at night looks really sleek and nice to me.

The warehouse one with that giant slow moving fan in the background isn't bad to me either, and aesthetically seems to be a good match for the NESTS saga storyline, where there is a lot of storyline stuff in places with a military bunker vibe (see also: the late stage storyline stuff in KoF'99). Feels sorta like a SvC Chaos stage too - though yeah, that's potentially divisive since I could see people not digging a lot of those backgrounds.

Also, as for sticks... I have a local store with several of the HORI stick in stock (and I own several RAPs for other systems), but I passed on it in favor of the 8bitdo stick that's releasing on August 20: http://www.8bitdo.com/nes30-arcade-stick/.

The 8bitdo has a nice design and NES pad aesthetic, it's fully moddable for easy swapping in Sanwa sticks/buttons, is a lot cheaper than the HORI ($80 MSRP versus $150 for the HORI) and it's BLUETOOTH to more easily allow for playing the Switch undocked (and not have to bother with a wire when playing on TV). We'll see how latency is, but I can't imagine it's that big of an issue (I normally play with a Switch Pro Controller and that's certainly fine). And it's not as if I'm playing in tournaments when I take an old Neo Geo game for a spin anyway...

I suspect I'll be immediately popping in some Sanwas once I get the stick, but I'll give some impressions when I get mine, which I currently have preordered from Amazon.

BTW, I hear that using a USB to USB-C converter/dongle (not included) does allow you to plug the HORI stick into the Switch in portable mode. Still, feels like an annoyance that I don't personally want to deal with.

Before the 2001 and 2002 efforts by Eolith, after with SNK (Playmore) got back to working on the series.

It was a NESTS-organized event, they probably spent most of the budget on the Zero Canon and weren't left with much to spend on locations.

The original Metal Slug 2 has slowdowns all over the place (even more so in 2 players mode). It's even worse than in "In the Hunt" (Irem submarine shooter, same team)

Yeah avoid the Switch version of Metal Slug 2 at all costs. The other Metal Slug titles on Switch work great for me though!

KoF 2000 is as great as I remember it, but I wish they could have included an option to keep Kula permanently unlocked in the CSS. She's one of my mains, so it sucks having to do a button sequence every time you want to play as her.

MS2 is like that, nothing to do with the Switch.
Even with all its problems, it's still a better game than X as far as I'm concerned.

You know what? I agree fully here.

Yes Metal Slug 2 has slowdown on all versions. The arcade has the same slowdowns.

And yes, I also prefer it to X (although X is a cooler name). The rearrangement of the bosses in X doesn't flow as well as in 2.

I've got 3 of these Neo Geo games on Switch now. KOF 98, Garou and Sam Sho. The one I play the most is Sam Sho. Mainly because the game isn't as combo heavy as the other two games. It's not the combos that are the problem as I'm perfectly capable of combos in the arcade versions. It's the execution of combos on the Switch (handheld mode). So while traveling I think I've played more Sam Sho than the other two.

I finally gave in and grabbed Garou off the eshop.

I'm generally a purist for real hardware but god dammit the Eshop ports are fucking quality!!!

I thought the garou port was bad from some of the screenshots here, with the screen being greyer?

Any news on a Spin Master release day for Switch?
Are we expecting Metal Slug X to be released soon for the Switch, if at all? Otherwise, I'm still debating about which Metal Slug title to pick up.
Hopefully but no news at all yet.

For now, if you want a high tuned game that is brutal in the later stages, but still awesome, then go with Metal Slug 3.

If you want the original experience with a good curve and simple story, then go with Metal Slug 1. Both are awesome titles.

So I'm currently in the mood for a good retro fighting game on Switch and was looking at the Neo Geo games. Is there a recommended choice for someone after a simplified moves game? I recall playing a Fatal Fury game years ago and not liking the complexity of the move inputs.

Ultra Street Fighter II would be a good choice if it were not so vastly overpriced (good candidate for a future Capcom eshop sale at least), so I thought I'd look into the Neo Geo stuff.

This one? I own it but don't have the Switch version to compare. Slowdown seems pretty similar to the original MVS version.

This is what people are heralding as the holy grail for emulation improvement? Looks like slow down city to me, I expected flawless 60fps gameplay without a hiccup or blip. Perhaps it got patched or that's not PS3 footage? Or if that is considered great, the Switch / Arcade must truly be a nightmare.

Anyone knows if the shumps have portrait mode? I bought striker 1945 and love the portrait mode.

Strikers 1945 was a natively a portrait game in the arcades though. All neo geo games are played in a standard horizontal orientation, SNK stipulated this had to be the case otherwise it would make it impossible for arcade operators to use the two and four slot mvs boards. SNK arcade cabinets had no monitor rotate mechanism either. Lastly they were also targeting home users with the AES so native portrait games would have not been suitable for your average consumers setup.

The PS4/XB1 got KOF '96 this week. It's not as good to play as 2000, but it's better looking from an artistic perspective.

So, I'm going to do my personal must buy/recommendation Neo Geo list. The must buy list is in order of my preferences, but the others are up to you.

Must Buy
Garou
Metal Slug 1
Metal Slug 3
Neo Turf Masters
Shock Troopers
KOF '98
Blazing Star
Aero Fighters 2

Recommended
Last Resort
Magical Drop 2
Waku Waku 7
Samurai Shodown (This is probably the first Recommended game you should buy, the thing is it ain't SamSho2.)
Samurai Shodown IV (I love this game, but it's not SamShoVSpecial)
KOF '99
KOF '2000

Worth Playing If You've Finished The Other Games
Fatal Fury Special (Pre-Real Bout FF can be a bit weird for some.)
Metal Slug 2 (Possibly the best crafted MS game in terms of design and difficulty, but that slowdown though...)
Shock Troopers 2nd Squad
Super Sidekicks (Probably better to wait for SS2.)

The Neo Geo was designed for an horizontal (or yoko) screen orientation. a recent homebrew game support TATE, but no official games did. Infact, this design choice is the reason why the Video Systems employee who made vertical shmups like Turbo Force and Aero Fighters broke off and founded Psikyo when Video System decided to focus on the Neo Geo to continue making portrait games... like Strikers 1945.

I was thinking the other day about this one particular game I used to play in the game room at the local Papa Gino's, and after doing some digging, realized it was in fact an SNK game.

That said, any chance of us getting Guerilla War?

I can't for the life of me activate split joy con multiplayer in Super Sidekicks. What am I doing wrong Gaf? :-(

You probably need to click the home button, go into the controller tab at the bottom, then set both joy cons to side ways in there by clicking the top buttons. The whole swapping controller settings between games on the Switch is terrible and something I wish they'd address.
