MoviePass (Unlimited Films in Theaters) Drops to $9.95 a Month

It kinda kills it for the theaters, people don't have to be loyal anymore. The point of the loyalty programs is to get ppl to keep coming to the same theater, but with Moviepass you lose alot of the incentive to do so, as you can go anywhere for unlimited movies.

I used to go to just Regal locally cause I would build up free movie tix, but now why bother with moviepass?

I mean if I'm still buying the movie ticket (paid by moviepass) do you still get rewards though with the theater? If so I'll stick with AMC as I'll still earn $5 rewards and such

I don’t see why not, it’s pretty much the same as paying with a credit card so they’d just scan your Stubs card during the transaction.

Theater chains make very little off ticket sales, so why are we so happy to "stick it to them?" when they are just trying to stay in business? Reason why the prices go up and the concessions cost so much is because they can't operate off ticket sales alone, so they are forced to push prices elsewhere and why so many theaters are trying to change to other formats to bring in extra money.
This is the same as buying full price tickets for the theater, the card loads the full price amount to each time you decide to go to a movie, so I'm not sure why they care. If anything it'll bring more revenue with people "buying" more tickets and more concessions.

are you sure that link shows eticketing? I plugged my zip code in and one of my local theaters, that I know has a kiosk, just says standard. And I find it hard to believe that no theater at all in the sacramento area has eticketing

They might have their own eticketing systems, but for whatever reason, those systems aren't compatible with MoviePass. Likely because they charge an extra fee for booking online, and MP doesn't want to eat that cost on top of the cost of the actual ticket.
edit: or MP just doesn't have a way to properly interface with those eticketing systems at all. In my area Studio Movie Grill is on the eticketing list for MP, but AMC, Cinemark, and Alamo are not, despite all having eticketing systems of their own.

edit2: as the Alamo rep in my area said, for $10/month to see a movie a day, you can't always get what you want. In this case, that's eticketing at their location if using moviepass.

Yeah this really is a horrible app. Website too. It's so hard to find out any info about the service. I ordered yesterday morning before the rush. The app even worked then. There was one e ticket theatre and the rest were regular. Will I get a card? No one knows? Can I see a movie on Friday using eticket? No one knows.

Not impressed. But at $10 I really don't care.

Do I need to create a separate account for my wife or we able to have two plans under the same account? Thanks Gaf you are better than their support website :p

Before I buy do they have a lock on their site before I enter my CC info/ can I use paypal? Do they still have no cancellation fees as of today? And can someone check the 94566 and 94598 area codes for me? Thank you so much.

The faster we can get movies into my house and take away the cinema going experience, the better.

I actually agree with you, I really hate going to the theater

I would honestly rather watch a shitty cam of a movie than go to a movie theater and deal with the hassle of driving there, buying a ticket, waiting in line, finding a seat, and dealing with inconsiderate shitheads on their phone

but for $10 a month to watch as many movies as I want, it's hard to pass this up

Tried doing e-tickets for a theater near me, pick a time and asks if I have a card - I say no then it says "failed to create reservation". Guess I'm waiting until the card or the app works better.

You can use Paypal. And yes, there are no cancellation fees anymore.

Is it me or are their severs website and app trash. Holy shit man. I signed my wife and I up yesterday and was finally able to log into the app today. Only for it to not pull up any theaters and keeps crashing.

Maybe they weren't ready for the sudden rush of new subs?

So on the website they offered the first month free. I sign up, but they charge my card immediately. I'm trying to cancel, but their website won't work nor their app. It won't let me get to my account to cancel.

Are they going to steal my social too?

find a better theater?

I didn't like going to the movies but a few years ago my local theater redid itself and gone were the old seats and now they are all nice leather electric reclining seats.
tickets are just bought at the front and seats are assigned to the ticket so you don't have to worry about finding a seat.
as for shitheads on their phone, that can still happen but the seats have a lot of space around them so it's not as big of a deal and I can just go report them to get them thrown out.

can't help with the driving part, but i mean it's still way better than the old movie going experience was.

I mean clearly. Their site has been getting hammered. I don't think this is representative of normal operations.

I plan to hit as many movies as I can that first few weeks when the card arrives, so if backlash is fierce or the company folds I at least get my value out of it.

Well its hard to keep things up when many people is hammering their servers.

People are confusing in this thread MoviePass e-ticketing with theater e-ticketing. Virtually every theater in the US now supports e-tickets, thats how fandango/atom work.

MoviePass e-ticketing is COMPLETELY different though, it means the theater directly supports e-tickets FROM moviepass. Almost no theater has this right now, except for a few small chains. Regal, AMC, etc do NOT do this even though all these theaters allow you to buy e-tickets from their own sites, fandango, etc.

Basically MoviePass can't strike a deal with any of these big chains, because they sure as hell don't want people valuing MoviePass as a service over themselves, so MoviePass is doing a run around them by giving subscribers a debit card and being tricky about "buying" a ticket on MoviePass just meaning loading that debit card with the correct amount, and then you just buy a regular ass ticket at the theater box office using the MoviePass debit card. Sure, AMC could totally block MoviePass debit cards (they all start with the same first 4 digits) but then they could probably get sued for discriminatory debit card practices or some weird shit like that.

We're all proxies in a war between MoviePass and big theater chains, the former wants to hold the power of saying "look, we have 500k people who go to movies a lot, do you want them as customers or not? Its gonna cost you..." and theaters who just wanna sell a premium entertainment experience and not devalue their offering as something equivalent to a netflix night.

For now its great for us, we pay $10/mo and get to see a shit ton of movies, but at some point things will definitely go south. EIther MoviePass runs out of money, theaters successfully block them which means you have very few places to use it, or the two sides come to an agreement which probably raises the price and limits how many times we can use it. But for now, enjoy the good times while mommy and daddy fight.

Well they have an awful website. There are no links to your account on the front page (unless I am missing it). So I had to google 'Movie Pass Account', and signed in from there. Once I signed in I saw it asking me if I received my card.
i had to go fill in the sign up page and wait for them to tell me I've already signed into this account.

i signed up to check theaters in the app. no theaters found. wtf. san diego area 92104.

what gives?

if its the app, you have to wait till you have the card, it just means no theaters near you do the e-ticket thing, once you get the card you get theaters added that allow card use.

what gives?

When I checked there were a bunch in the area.

AMC in Fashion Valley and Mission Valley, Grossmont in La Mesa, Ultrastar Cinema, Horton Plaza, etc.

Only ones that weren't on the list were independent theaters like Ken Cinema and the one in Hillcrest.

I agree. That's why I signed my wife and myself up for this deal.

But even the independent cinemas will still accept the debit card, right? I'm still not sure how thisb all works. It sounds like they just send you a debit card that you only use at movie theatres.

Yea from what I understand you select the movie you want from the App and it sends the money to the card to use at the theater.

New interview with MoviePass: https://www.wsj.com/articles/moviep...ince-theater-industry-to-cooperate-1502909718

“In the end if we end up having to subsidize overusage who is winning?” responded MoviePass Chief Executive Mitch Lowe. “It’s the theaters and studios.”

Previously, the company had about 20,000 subscribers. “We’re way, way, way, way, way beyond that now,” said Mr. Farnsworth.

Sounds like they'll be hitting that 150,000 mark way sooner than 15 months.
