LG promises HDR gaming input lag patch for 2016 OLED sets

Trust me, both modes were WAY brighter before this update.

No, It's dark as fuck even in a cave. It doesn't matter what your viewing environment is, that's not how HDR should be, especially on an OLED that's already dimmer than LCD TVs.

No LCD too, like my 2016 850V.

However trying the LG suggestion of Dynamic Contrast on high I can't see much difference between Game HDR mode and the default HDR mode.

So it doesn't seem a huge issue after all.
????

What's hard for you to understand?

The HDR Game mode is dimmer than it was.

LG says put Dynamic Contrast on high.

HDR Game mode then looks good.

Still much dimmer than before even with dynamic contrast on high. I want to downgrade.

It doesn't look good though.

I have an LG OLED C55 and I tested this side by side with regular HDR modes. The colours are off now. Text which was black is now grey, for example.

You can engage in discussion without being condescending.

I was pointing out how different people's experience post-update seems to be. Some, like you, are playing it down, while others are calling it 'dark as fuck even in a cave'. So yeah. Hard to grasp as an outsider (considering buying an OLED) what your experience with it would be.

Edit: posts above as additional evidence there :)

I think you may be confusing two things. The 2016 sets have already had an update that adds a lower latency HDR Gaming mode.

The issue being discussed right now is a further firmware update that altered the brightness of the HDR Game mode.

I'm not confusing anything. We are discussing the OLED displays, not the LCD displays.

There is no debate here, at least on UK/EU B6s. Game HDR mode is dim. Dimmer than any other HDR setting. Even activating dynamic contrast doesn't bring it in line with other modes, so there must be an underlying technical reason for it. IR is a distinct possibility, considering how quickly it comes about with titles with big expanses of harsh colours, such as The Witness on PS4.

We need a new thread on the newest LG mess up, as its no longer about what the thread title is about. Or rename this one to general LG Oled TV firmware issues as it can affect both 2016/17 sets.

HDR Game mode is lower in brightness then any modern TV or monitor or smartphone display, even when you have it set to maximum brightness. I use mine in a bright environment (praise the sun!) and a dark one. Using Standard dynamic range as that looks and is more useful for now.

Still hoping LG decides to listen to the complaints and bring a proper fix to it, while perhaps also offering the dim HDR game mode for the ones that want it. But if not it definitely might be about IR then and that just fucking sucks.

But in that case I'll either be upping game brightness or I use one of the three other HDR modes.

So basically, I shouldn't upgrade my LG OLED55B6V to the newest firmware?

I hope this all gets sorted out and HDR game mode is fixed somehow. Unless it's really the plan to keep it that way (based on LG's response so far).

Here are some rough but hopefully useful instructions to downgrade to your firmware of choice:

1. Get the LgDTVUpDater_04_2017.zip program. I won't post a link here to avoid any trouble :) Google.

2. (Delete the "LgDTVUpDater" folder if you already set it up, that'll make it simpler)

3. Extract the zip to C:, so you end up with "C:\LgDTVUpDater"

4. Identify the firmware you want to downgrade to. You need the actual firmware file, which you can might be able to get from your countrys LGs support site at the moment. If not, hopefully you have it downloaded previously. ( I chose 04.31.05 as my target)

5. Copy the firmware to "C:\LgDTVUpDater\htdocs"

6. Follow the 3 first steps here to identify what your Response file should be named.

7. Go to "C:\LgDTVUpDater\zagotovki\local\2016". Identify your model from the folder list. For example, for C6, go to "UH780, UH850-UH855, UH950-UH955, OLED E6, C6"

8. Go into one of the folders in there. The firmware numbers there shouldn't matter, as we'll edit it to fit the firmware we're downgrading to later. I used "04_30_55_GB_" as my base.

9. Copy the file you find in there to "C:\LgDTVUpDater\htdocs". The file name for my C6 was "HE_DTV_W16M_AFADABAA".

10. Rename the file to whatever you came up with in step 6!

11. Open the file you just copied in a text editor like notepad.

12. You need to edit this file to match the firmware you have downloaded. Here's the file I ended up with for reference:

Code:
<RESPONSE><RESULT_CD>900</RESULT_CD><MSG>Success</MSG><REQ_ID>00000000008076692602</REQ_ID><IMAGE_URL>http://snu.lge.com/SWDownload.laf</IMAGE_URL><IMAGE_SIZE>892884989</IMAGE_SIZE><IMAGE_NAME>starfish-dvb-secured-m16-7.deua.m16-727-04.31.05-prodkey_usb_V3_SECURED.epk</IMAGE_NAME><UPDATE_MAJOR_VER>04</UPDATE_MAJOR_VER><UPDATE_MINOR_VER>31.05</UPDATE_MINOR_VER><FORCE_FLAG>Y</FORCE_FLAG><KE></KE><GMT>19 May 2017 14:24:34 GMT</GMT><ECO_INFO>01</ECO_INFO><CDN_URL>http://snu.lge.com:80/starfish-dvb-secured-m16-7.deua.m16-727-04.31.05-prodkey_usb_V3_SECURED.epk</CDN_URL><CONTENTS></CONTENTS></RESPONSE>

Things to pay attention to here:

  • <IMAGE_SIZE> should match the exact file size of the firmware. You can find it by right-clicking the firmware file and choosing Properties. Copy the bytes value like in this picture:

    Mrn8tKo.png

Remove the spaces after pasting it into <IMAGE_SIZE>
  • <IMAGE_NAME> should be the exact name of your firmware file.
  • <UPDATE_MAJOR_VER> should match the two first digits of the firmware version you're downgrading to, 04 in my case.
  • <UPDATE_MINOR_VER> should match the last 4 digits of the firmware version, plus the dot inbetween, 31.05 in my case.
  • <GMT> I entered the date the firmware file was created, you can find that in the properties of the firmware file as well. In my case it was 19 May 2017 14:24:34.
  • <CDN_URL> you need to add the filename of your firmware after "http://snu.lge.com:80/". In my case it was http://snu.lge.com:80/starfish-dvb-secured-m16-7.deua.m16-727-04.31.05-prodkey_usb_V3_SECURED.epk.

13. Save the file

14. Go to "C:\LgDTVUpDater" and double click on "start.bat"

15. Answer N to the first question and press Enter.

16. Look at the IP address at the start of the next question. Verify that this matches the local IP of your computer. (Here's how to find your local IP) If the address matches, answer Y and press Enter.

17. Repeat the previous step. If the IP matches, answer Y and press Enter.

18. Go to the internet settings on your TV, choose Ethernet or Wifi, select Edit, Uncheck "Set Automatically". Enter the Local IP of your computer into "DNS SERVER"

vKCmyxg.jpg

Click Connect. (It won't connect right now)

19. Go back to your PC and press Enter in the command window with yellow text. If you get any Firewall warnings, allow them all through the firewall.

20. Go back to the TV and verify that it connects to the internet (All 4 rings should be green in the window you entered the computer IP.

21. If it connects, go to General -> About This TV, and click "Check for updates". Hopefully it finds the firmware you want to downgrade to. Click "Install".

22. If all is well, it should start downgrading!

I recommend resetting the TV to Initial Settings after downgrading, to be sure it works as intended. I have no idea if this is needed, I just like to do it as an added precaution. Not doing it might be perfectly fine.

This was long and hard to read, but it should contain all you need to complete the downgrade successfully. Let me know if it works for you!

UPDATE: If you're running IIS on your Windows installation, you might have to perform the steps mentioned here. (Scroll down to the instructions regarding Windows 10 and W3SVC) Be sure to reverse the steps once you're finished.

Do you have the 04.31.05 firmware file in the htdocs folder?

As in the file called "starfish-dvb-secured-m16-7.deua.m16-727-04.31.05-prodkey_usb_V3_SECURED.epk" that's about 850MB in size?

When people said that LG stated that it was all intentional and that they were going to expand this to all models, I actually got excited. I mean, I understand the horror that everyone experienced at the announcement, but it's actually a good thing. If they spread this screw-up to an infinitely wider audience, then there is going to be that much more complaints and scrutiny. The bigger and louder the unhappy customer base, the better for us, because it would push them to fix the issue that much quicker.

Go for broke LG, I want to actually play games on my obscenely expensive TV that I bought not too long ago.

I've been watching this thread closely to see how LG will make things right with 2016 OLED owners. 2017 models already have HLG though so was that the one big update for 2016 models? I'm actually kind of fearful the 2017 models are going to get updated with this "fix".

Yeah let's not get too hyperbolic about it. Playing games on these sets is a phenomenal experience. Playing HDR enabled games likewise if you use one of the regular HDR modes. Not every game needs the response times necessary to play competitive twitch shooters.

Worked like a charm !!
Thanks

Now how am I sure to not upgrade by mistake just deactivating automatic update is enough on the tv ? I won't have any prompt ?

Great to hear you got it fixed!

I blocked following URLs in my router firewall to prevent it from trying to get me to update:

snu.lge.com
su.lge.com

That part is really not very clear yeah. I'm at work now, but I'll try to clean it up a bit later today.

Does it stop any kind of update prompt ?
I will block these two as well and manually update if there is ever a better firmware than the previous one ...

My TV hasn't said a peep about the update since I blocked them, so I believe it does. I was a bit worried it might affect the Smart TV functionality, but that's working like it should. I'll unblock them when/if LG comes to their senses :)

So if you downgrade, HDR Game will be as bright as the other HDR modes? Right now I don't need to do this because I don't have a console supporting HDR, but I will in November. But it probably would be better to do it now, just to be sure, now that it still works. We've no guarantee at all that LG is gonna give the fix we want.

(First like us rule kind (http https ftp and so on ) second is ip I want to block , source port , ip I want to block the access to this in this case my tv , destination port , protocole, and refused )

I'm not very good at these thing ...

I'm not sure how to fill out the port fields, but you could try skipping them and see if it works.

Still prompt me for update. Damn :( so close

The dim mode for the B6 was introduced months ago (I think it was the first update after the initial HDR game mode update).

Ohhhh I thought there was gonna be a new one that made it dim.

I don't find the current HDR Game mode to be dim at all but I also never had the TV prior to that update.

Played through all of Horizon, Uncharted 4, and both Infamous games.

I did have to turn up the in game brightness in Infamous. Otherwise no issues.

I have my OLED in a fairly dark room, if it matters. Dynamic contrast off.
