PS4 BETA firmware 5.00 out today

wait, wasnt there a beta test? Or that sisnt happen? Was literally only the other week. Sure there is not a bigger update in the works and this is just the backend stuff?

And why does everyone expect big things because its a .0 update. They are just version numbers lol

EDIT: oh this is the beta. Lol

Wonder if we'll ever see downsampling

Very unlikely. They've already made the choice to allow devs to implement on an ad-hoc basis, so adding a system level override/alternative would just cause confusion.

Not to mention that downsampling while not a particularly heavy gpu process, is going to have a performance cost. Its not "free".

Is there a privacy option for individual friends yet? Like appear offline/ hide games for/from one specific person?

Everyone I know who has a family has been asking for better parental controls on all electronic devices for years now. Most platforms are either convulted and woefully inefficient or else have non existent parental controls.

I guess all of us parents aren't "gamers" though.

TBH if being a "gamer" means whining on the internet that parental controls finally got an update and deeming it a waste/lacklustre/boring then I don't want to be one anyway.

I doubt I'll even bother beta testing it. This is what they give us for a 5.0 update...

Hopefully there is a code.

I'll just give mine away.

Ohh well, see you guys in February where I'm sure it will be focused on improving PlayStation move support and 720p tv's.

No notifications while watching video!

For me that alone is worthy of the 5.0 tag

Really like the update to the Quick Menu but that's it. I'm usually not very fussy about these updates so no need for me to be in the beta for this tbh.

But it is free.

How do you think folk playing their PS4s (either OG or Pro) on 720p/768p TVs are getting by?

Set your PS4 to 720p output. It is now downsampling any game that renders higher than 720p.

Where's the performance issue?

Oh, I'm actually curious. Who here uses ps now? Sony basically tried to monetize BC by forcing gamers to use ps now or pay for old titles on their ps4, several of which we already paid for on the ps3.

It's like... if they're going to monetize BC, there should be better support. They barely release PS2 classics any more, it feels like. They did ask if we used ps now when signing for the beta, even though it is irrelevant to this update. Maybe they're trying to gauge how many people actually use it. But they should be able to tell based on sub numbers, right?

Sounds good. Custom friend list and leaving parties from quick menu. Both stuff I'll use often especially with Destiny 2 soon

For me there's nothing else they need to add to the system so these little improvements are all fine to me

I wouldn't really call this one a big update (as in, with a big important feature) but considering it's a lot of minor-ish stuff it's OK to call it that I guess..

Yes, version numbers are arbitrary to mean whatever the dev wants, but in the case of Sony with the PS4, every x.50 increase is a big update compared to any other (and is also why they get a codename and beta testing)

Has any comparison between native and downsampled performance in a PS4/PS4p ever showed any kind of measurable difference?

It's been half a year.

We shouldn't wait half a fucking year to change notifications from white to black.

Half this shit in the update could probably be done in like a month.

Notifications Updates
We’ve added a new setting that allows you to disable pop-up notifications while you’re watching a movie or TV show on your PS4. This setting is off by default, so go to Settings > Notifications to disable notifications and go uninterrupted during your videos.

fantastic

So are the quick menu updates.

oh man, cant believe it took so long for the revised parental controls.
the old system was stupid.

microsofts parental controls are soooo much better than what sony had.

-Stream comments in VR
-Notifications on quick menu
-"Leave party" on quick menu

These are useful to me.

It's not a big update, but I'd rather have these features now than have them held back another 6 months just to be part of a more substantial update.

Sorry that isn't how it works buddy. Your console will still render internally at the at a base resolution set by devs on Og. There ain't any downsampling happening.

While this doesn't have what people want, why were some of us expecting something that they've never even discussed in passing or mentioned previously (to my knowledge), such as system wide downsampling, or even BC?

Or is it one of those process of elimination "well what else is left" mentality.

Just tryna see why people are mad for something that wasn't promised

Well, in one of their surveys, they asked what people wanted in a checklist. These were options. So they technically did ask what we want.

Nobunaga? More like Nobunada, am I right?

No improvements to the download section? What a bummer. The notification section is kind of a mess right now.

...

Let's take Uncharted 4 for example. That game renders at 1080p on base PS4.

Set your console to 720p for your 720p/768p TV. The resolution of the game doesn't change, it's still rendering at 1080p and downsampling to your lower resolution display.

If the game is rendering internally at 1080p and the output is a 720p image, then that's downsampling, isn't it?

Its a niche feature. A couple dozen people on gaf want it. Having it would be a cool option but there are other things I'd rather want. Like seriously.

The games people want downsampling on are already rendering at the higher resolution, they just aren't giving the option to render at the higher resolution and then display at 1080P on non 4K displays, where's the extra power required? It's just changing the output resolution, it's not doing any more work.

No idea. But I can say as a fact that any sort of scaling/transform is going to have a measurable cost if its not implemented in hardware. And if it was implemented in hardware and thus completely transparent, why isn't it used universally?
